Satisfy your sweet cravings in the 9 best doughnut shops in Johannesburg!
I was craving locally made doughnuts since I got tired of eating Krispy Kreme. My search led me to an exciting discovery—25 independent doughnut shops right here in Johannesburg. But where to start?
I decided to dig in (literally!) and uncover the best spots to satisfy my cravings!
Dough & Co.

Start your day by picking up a doughnut at Dough & Co. on Parktown North. This cozy bakery and café is famous for its pastries, including bagels, muffins, and, of course, doughnuts.
Their top-seller is the cinnamon sugar doughnut for R18—sweet, crispy, and perfectly soft and fluffy.
However, I’m biased when it comes to anything with chocolate, so my favorite is their chocolate donut for R27. The rich, dark chocolate glaze was smooth and creamy and had a satisfying crunch.
Pro Tip: Pair your doughnut with their Americano coffee. The coffee is made from Dimello, a premium imported coffee brand, and is a blend of 90% Arabica and 10% Robusta. It has notes of caramel and chocolate that go perfectly with the doughnut. |

If you’re looking for mini doughnuts, The Donuttery is the place to shop. They offer freshly baked mini doughnuts that are bursting with flavor.
What I loved about this place was the freedom to customize my treat. Instead of pre-made toppings, The Donuttery let me choose up to three toppings from options like cinnamon, milk chocolate, caramel, powdered sugar, and white chocolate. For just R30, I crafted my own delicious masterpiece!
Pro Tip: Add a fourth topping for R7. You can choose among options like Milo, crushed peanuts, crushed Oreos, mini marshmallows, mini smarties, or mini Astros. |

Ever wondered what a combination of a croissant and a doughnut tastes like? Head to Johannesburg’s popular spot, X&O Patisserie, for a fresh, handmade cronut!
I’ll admit I was skeptical about the cronut hype, but I was more than happy to be proven wrong. For just R32, their cronut blew me away with its perfectly flaky layers and sweet, indulgent filling.
What’s even better is that they’re always innovating. Owner Yaseen Essa loves creating something special for every occasion. Last December, he unveiled a rainbow-themed cronut that didn’t just look amazing; it tasted incredible too!
Pro Tip: Try their Bubblegum Caramel-Chip Crazy Shake for R76 and pair it with a peppermint-crisp cronut. You’ll be surprised by the burst of sweet and minty flavors! |

Another great shop for mini doughnuts is Nothi Doughs. You’ll find plenty of flavors to choose from, like Milky Lane, Milky Lane 2.0, Caramel Delight, Golden Sunshine Duo, Ray of Sunshine, and Top Deck.
My personal favorite is the Top Deck. It’s loaded with double white chocolate syrup and topped with your choice of chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or chocolate sprinkles—a true delight for chocolate lovers like me!
Pro Tip: Order on a weekend so you can get mini doughnuts with fillings of cream cheese, strawberry cream, caramel cream, and more! |

One of the best spots in Johannesburg for a delightful selection of freshly baked goods with a French twist is La Bakery. Here, you’ll find an array of pastries, including muffins, cakes, and African doughnut koeksisters.
I was impressed that a French bakery could make excellent koeksisters. It was golden brown and glistened with syrup. It had a perfect balance of textures—a crispy outside and a soft, chewy inside soaked in sweet syrup.
They also make great jam doughnuts, baked fresh and filled with a generous amount of sweet, fruity jam. Each bite has a satisfying crunch from the light sugar coating on top.
Pro Tip: Besides the doughnuts, try their local favorite—Swiss roll cakes. They’re moist, light, and filled with a creamy, delicious filling that melts in your mouth, making them a great option for a take-home treat. |

Family-owned Saleh’s Bakery is a great spot for freshly made doughnuts. They’ve been crafting pastries since 1992 and have earned the World Gourmand Cookbook Award for their high-quality baked goods, including cakes and bread.
Their jelly-filled doughnut was one of the best I’ve tasted. For R15, I got a pillowy soft, freshly fried doughnut. The fruit jelly filling paired perfectly with the light sugar coating, creating a sweet and crunchy experience.
They also have classic glazed, chocolate-glazed, and cream-filled doughnuts for you to try!
Pro Tip: Keep an eye out each season, as Saleh’s Bakery always releases a seasonal doughnut! In spring, they introduced their strawberry doughnut, offering the freshest strawberry-flavored treat. |

Another family-owned bakery is Croydon Bakery, owned by father and son Tim and Dimitri Moustakis. The bakery has been serving delicious pies, cakes, and doughnuts since 1980.
For the doughnuts, they have five options: plain, chocolate-glazed, jelly-filled, custard-filled, apple, and Boston cream. They cost R11 to R20 each, which is very affordable.
I tried their plain doughnut, and there was nothing plain about it. It has a sweet, slightly sugary flavor with a hint of vanilla that is not overly sweet. It was delightful due to its light, airy texture and slight crispiness on the outside.
Pro Tip: Try their Bowery Espresso for R71. Made with TriBeCa coffee, it has notes of raisin, cocoa, and molasses that pair perfectly with your doughnut! |
Belem Bakery & Confectionery

If you’re looking for a place that has been hand-making pastries and baked goods since 1978, Belem Bakery & Confectionery is worth a visit. They offer a variety of breads, cakes, and doughnuts, along with other treats.
When it comes to doughnuts, you have two options: cream-filled or glazed. The cream-filled ones are available with custard or jam, giving you a rich, flavorful bite.
I went for the chocolate and white chocolate glazed doughnuts for R16 each. The chocolate glaze had a smooth, velvety coating that melted in my mouth, while the white chocolate glaze was creamy and sweet without being too much.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to try their pastéis de nata, a delicacy that dates back to the 18th century. These Portuguese custard tarts originated from Catholic monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon—a treat with a rich history and flavor! |

HotBake has been baking fresh pastries since 1987, offering cakes, cupcakes, and doughnuts.
They have five types of doughnuts to choose from. You can grab the mini ring, ring, donut holes, or Long John in packs of six, while the glazed doughnuts are available individually for R10 each.
The best part of buying your doughnuts here is they’re fully customizable! They offer DIY donut kits with fun options like chocolate crunch, raspberry crunch, golden caramel crunch, tutti frutti crunch, and classic glaze—each paired with colorful sprinkles for R94 each.
Pro Tip: They offer freezer-to-oven croissants. Just pop them in an oven, and in minutes, you’ll have bakery-quality croissants ready to enjoy at home! |
