Boma on Bree is a spot where everything is cooked over an open flame. When we visited, the braai platter stood out, loaded with lamb ribs, steak, chicken, boerewors, lamb sosatie, and three sides.

As for drinks, the Frozen Cactus Sunset is a refreshing choice. It’s made with tequila, mango, pineapple, thyme, and chamomile tea, and served in a handmade stone mug. 

Pro Tip:
Take advantage of Boma’s happy hour from Tuesday to Saturday, 4 PM to 6 PM, for 30% off beers, frozen cocktails, spirits, and house wine.

Burger & Lobster is a lively spot that offers more than just its namesake dishes. I was impressed with their small plates, especially the seafood options. 

The grilled king prawns were a highlight for me because of their spicy kick from the kimchi balanced by the sweetness of the melon salsa. 

The soft-shell crabs with nduja and seaweed crisps are also worth trying if you’re in the mood for something a bit different.

Pro Tip:
Visit between 4 PM and 5:30 PM for their ‘Half-Price Social Hour’ where you can enjoy 50% off selected drinks and a great selection of bar bites at reduced prices.

Chefs Warehouse & Canteen is a lively place where a deli, kitchen store, and tapas restaurant come together. The menu changes every day, reflecting seasonal produce and the chefs’ creative ideas. 

Here, I’ve enjoyed everything from saffron risotto with prawns to a hearty pork belly with roasted cauliflower. For dessert, I had the classic lemon posset, which featured creamy lemon with a sweet raspberry sauce and a crunchy pistachio topping

Pro Tip:
Arrive early and use the no-reservations bar to enjoy a cold drink and some olives while you wait, making the most of the time before your table is ready.

Clarke’s Dining Room has become a staple for all-day breakfasts, brunch cocktails, and relaxed lunches. This spot has been popular for over a decade thanks to its stylish Scandi decor and a focus on using carefully sourced ingredients.

For breakfast, I tried the fire eggs, which are baked in a tasty tomato-chickpea stew. For lunch, the sandwiches made with sourdough from Woodstock Bakery were a hit, and their burgers served on freshly baked buns were really satisfying.

Pro Tip:
This is a cashless restaurant, so be sure to bring a credit or debit card for your meal.

I enjoyed the risotto for its creamy texture and balanced seasoning, and the braised beef was tender with a rich flavour. The wine list is well-chosen, adding a nice touch to the meal.

For a relaxed start to your weekend, try Grub & Vine’s Saturday Brunch Club, which features a range of small plates and bottomless bubbly, mimosas, and Bloody Marys.

Hacienda Coastal Mexican is a great spot to enjoy Mexican flavours. The menu features dishes meant for sharing, like charcoal-grilled Wagyu, chorizo prawns, and seabass ceviche with tiger’s milk. 

I found the totopos with their three salsas to be especially good, with the salsa verde adding a refreshing, zesty note. Additionally, the mole Hacienda is another standout for its complex blend of cocoa and spices that enhances the depth of the dish.

Pro Tip:
Make sure to visit during their happy hour from 4 PM to 5:30 PM for half-price margaritas.

I often go for the classic Margherita because it’s simple yet satisfying, with fresh mozzarella and basil on a well-baked crust. And if you’re like me and love a good side, the crispy dough sticks with dipping sauce are a must-try.

Pro Tip:
Try their slushy machines for a refreshing treat; they mix up some flavourful, icy alcoholic drinks.

Iron Steak and Bar offers a straightforward menu with a focus on quality steaks. Their 200 g grass-fed flat iron steak, served with a fresh house salad, is a solid option for a good value meal. 

For a treat, their Wagyu and cuts like the tomahawk are fantastic. I’m a big fan of their sides too; the truffled mac and cheese and Wagyu dripping chips are hard to resist, and the apple, fennel, and walnut salad is a refreshing option if you want to skip the carbs.

Pro Tip:
Don’t miss out on the branded poker chip you get with your bill. It redeems a delicious salted caramel ice cream cone rolled in Valrhona chocolate. You can save your chip for a future visit if you prefer.

Nikkei blends Japanese and Peruvian cuisines in a unique way that’s definitely worth trying. The menu features standout dishes like ceviche and various shared plates cooked on a charcoal grill.

For sushi, I enjoyed the rolls that combined creamy avocado with fresh, lightly seasoned fish. The pisco sours are a must-try; the blend of sharp pisco with a sweet and tangy lime flavour made for a perfect pairing with the meal.

Pro Tips:
For a great deal, visit during Pisco Hour from Monday to Saturday, when all pisco-based cocktails are half-price from 4:30 PM to 6 PM.

On Sundays, you can enjoy a sushi platter and discounted sake cocktails while a live DJ sets the mood.

My first visit to Nish Nush was a delightful surprise. The falafels, with their crispy exterior and tender interior, were enhanced by a creamy, tangy sauce that made each bite memorable.

The hummus was incredibly smooth and fresh, adding to the authentic Middle Eastern experience. Everything, from the pita bread to the zhoug sauce, is made from scratch daily, making each dish stand out with rich, genuine flavours.

Pro Tip:
While they await their liquor licence, bring your own drinks or opt for their refreshing homemade lemonade.

I love that their menu changes daily, offering delights like seared tuna burgers, hake ceviche, and classic fish ‘n chips. Their oysters, sourced from Knysna and Saldanha, are a personal favourite, especially when paired with a glass of bubbly.

Pro Tip:
For a great deal, visit SeaBreeze from 5 PM to 6 PM daily for their “10 bucks a shuck” Oyster Happy Hour. It means you can get oysters for 10 rands each during their happy hour.

Susa Restaurant is one of my go-to spots for a varied menu that covers everything from breakfast to dinner. What I appreciate most here is their commitment to quality, which makes each visit enjoyable.

Their breakfast sandwiches and wraps are always fresh, and their coffee is a great pick-me-up. For lunch or dinner, I enjoy the Susa Bowl with seared tuna, which combines sesame rice balls with fresh mint and a tangy sauce.

When I visited, I particularly enjoyed their falafels. They were crispy on the outside and tender inside. For drinks, their selection of MCC, champagne, and creative cocktails adds a nice touch to the experience.

I couldn’t resist the chilli beef with broccoli, which was fiery and satisfying, especially with a side of Chinese water spinach. The open kitchen adds a special touch to the experience, filling the small space with mouth-watering aromas.

Villa 47

Villa 47 is a three-storey Italian emporium that offers Italian food from morning to night. The ground floor, Locanda, offers a relaxed bistro vibe, while the Martini Terrazza Lounge upstairs specialises in small plates paired with sophisticated cocktails. 

I found the signature eggs Benedict for breakfast particularly satisfying, with poached eggs and creamy hollandaise sauce. The small plates here are also worth trying, especially when paired with their crafted cocktails.

Pro Tip:
Martini Terrazza Lounge is a highlight during the monthly first-Thursday events. Make sure to check out their schedule, as they feature a lineup of exciting DJs and artists, adding a vibrant atmosphere to your evening.
