Nu Metro actually has a chain of theatres across South Africa, but for this list, we’re referring to one located in Hyde Park, Johannesburg. It’s a modern-looking venue, but we love the throwbacks to traditional cinemas like its red signage up top!
Upon entering the venue, you’ll be treated to some great movie-related merchandise and decor (depending on the featured films). You’ll spot cartoon characters and life-sized figures of actors as you line up to buy some popcorn.

If you’re looking for a unique cinema experience, then check out what Roadhouse- Molly Malone’s has to offer. It’s a drive-in cinema where you park your car in front of the venue’s large screen and tune your car’s radio frequency to get audio.
You can then enjoy their movies in the comfort of your own vehicle while sharing a laugh, a sob, or some thrills with your family and friends. Plus, you can order food (e.g., burgers and fries) while watching a film to make your experience much more enjoyable!

Ster Kinekor has a number of cinema branches across Johannesburg, but one of their largest ones is located in Newtown, Johannesburg. It’s composed of 6 different cinemas with around 760 seats in total—perfect for the crowds during peak movie releases!
What we liked most about this cinema, though, aside from its size is its self-service catering terminals where you can place orders and make payments via the said terminals before collecting your snacks. This is definitely a plus for convenience!

The Bioscope Independent Cinema is something you need to experience at least once when in Johannesburg. It’s a completely different experience thanks to the interiors that look like an homage to all things related to cinema (e.g., posters and actor biographies).
Plus, the films they feature aren’t just mainstream ones but also indie films and not-so-mainstream movies nominated for an Oscar. You can also enjoy a good laugh here if you happen to visit during their stand-up comedy Sundays!

The IMAX Theatre located in Germiston is the ultimate cinema experience and one you shouldn’t miss if you are truly a movie buff. You pay more, but you get your money’s worth with the premium experience of a better (and larger) screen and louder audio.
Aside from the wonderful movie experience you can get here, we are certain you’ll appreciate the efficient and automated snack ordering system they have. However, if you want something more filling, check out the food hall right beside the movie theatre.

What’s impressed us the most, though, is the available library of movies offered by Egrek Cinema. They have the latest blockbusters and big-budget movies, or you can also opt to watch some of your favourite (and maybe hard-to-find) movie classics!

Montecasino located in Fourways, Johannesburg is a world-class destination for entertainment. As such, we’re no longer surprised that they have one of the best and most impressive cinemas in the entire country (aside from hotels and restaurants!).
As you make your way to the ticket booth, you’ll see a ton of movie posters that will make you much more excited to watch the film you came to see. The movie theatre itself is also a delight with comfy chairs, a large screen, and great audio to boot!

If you fancy watching a movie in a venue that feels like a traditional theatre complete with leather furniture and wooden accents for the ticket and concession stands, then movies@ Gold Reef City is the place to be. Even their restrooms look old school!
The technology inside the cinema though (such as the projector and audio) is anything but outdated. It can provide you and your loved ones with great viewing angles along with deep-sounding bass that will make the characters on screen come to life!

CineCentre Killarney is a great movie theatre to bring your family to for a night of movie bonding and fun! Aside from the modern and well-maintained facilities, the sound and video quality of this movie theatre is phenomenal, making it worth every Rand.
Plus, their snack stall offers tons of combos for you and your kids to choose from. They have varying sizes of popcorn bags and range from ZAR 67 to ZAR 116, but the difference in pricing usually comes from the size of the soda and the sides included.
