Best Day Trips from Cape Town to Add to Your Travel Bucket List

Cape Town is such an awesome place to be based because there are so many incredible spots to explore nearby.

You’ll find a wide range of activities to enjoy, from wine tasting in the Cape Winelands to going on a safari at game reserves or even snorkelling with seals.

I’ve put together some of the absolute best day trips from Cape Town, along with things to do in each location and some helpful tips for visiting.

Cape Peninsula

Media from kelliepaxian

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour-and-4-minute drive

When I visited the Cape Peninsula, it quickly became one of my favourite day trips. The region’s natural beauty, featuring rugged cliffs, lush vegetation, and a dramatic coastline, made it a truly memorable experience.

Driving along Chapman’s Peak Drive was a highlight for me. The views from the road were breathtaking, and it’s easy to see why it’s considered one of the most scenic drives in South Africa.

I visited Cape Point and found it well worth the trip, even though many tours don’t go to the Cape of Good Hope. The stunning cliffs and ocean views make it a fantastic spot to soak in the scenery.

Pro Tip:
For a hassle-free day trip, consider booking the highly acclaimed Full-Day Small Group Tour. This tour offers a scenic drive over Chapman’s Peak and stops at the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point Nature Reserve, and Boulders Beach.

Cape Winelands

Media from cape.winelands

Distance from City Centre: 44-minute drive (to Stellenbosch)

I’ve spent some time exploring the Cape Winelands, and I’ve found that it’s a wonderful spot for both wine and food lovers. The region is dotted with vineyards and surrounded by impressive mountains. Franschhoek, in particular, offers stunning views.

The wine-making tradition here dates back to the 17th century when the Dutch started in Stellenbosch and the French Huguenots began in Franschhoek.

If you plan to go wine tasting, be prepared to spend around R55 to R100, and you can enjoy a generous cheese board for about R200. Just a heads up: it’s illegal to drink and drive, so it’s best to have a designated driver or opt for a tour.

Pro Tip:
Consider staying in the Cape Winelands for at least one night to make the most of your visit, as wine tasting is typically recommended as a morning activity!

Robben Island

Website: https://www.robben-island.org.za/

Phone: +27 (0)21 413 4200

Operating Hours:

  • Open daily
  • Tours run as follows: 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM

Distance from City Centre: 30-minute boat ride

Robben Island is the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years during his fight against the apartheid regime. It was originally a place where Dutch settlers held their political prisoners before becoming a home for “society’s unwanted.”

During my visit to the island, I booked a tour through their official website. The tour included a ferry ride to and from the island and a guided visit to several historical sites.

I had the opportunity to see Mandela’s former cell, the Maximum Security Prison, and a graveyard where people who died from leprosy were buried. The tour also covered various significant landmarks, all led by knowledgeable guides.

Pro Tip:
Keep in mind that tickets often sell out! To ensure you don’t miss out, it’s best to purchase them early.

Table Mountain National Park

Website: https://www.tablemountain.net/

Address: 5821 Tafelberg Rd

Phone: +27 21 424 0015

Distance from City Centre: 15-minute drive

Table Mountain National Park is an incredible outing that warrants an entire day, especially if you’re considering hiking Table Mountain. The iconic peak, towering over 3,000 feet, offers the most incredible views of the city and its surroundings.

Hiking up Table Mountain was quite the experience. The trail is well-marked, though it does get steep in places. The effort is well worth it for the panoramic views at the top.

If hiking isn’t your thing, you can always take the cable car to the summit. The ride itself offers stunning views and a bit of excitement as you ascend.

Pro Tips:
If you want to go up Table Mountain, check the official website to check the weather at the top because it can change fast. Don’t forget to check out Kloof’s Corner for a quick hike with an amazing view over the sea and the city!

Boulders Beach Penguin Colony

Media from secret.africa

Distance from City Centre: 51-minute drive

At Boulders Beach, I enjoyed seeing the penguins waddling around and swimming in the waves. One part of the beach was quite busy, while the other side was more relaxed, offering a chance to hang out with the penguins in a quieter setting.

Even though there were plenty of tourists, I found it charming to watch the penguins up close and see families enjoying the water.

The entry fee is 35 ZAR, which is about $2.30, and it’s cheaper for kids under 12.

Pro Tips:
Most tours to the Cape Peninsula include a stop at this penguin colony. It’s a good idea to visit Boulders Beach when you go to Cape Point National Park. Remember not to feed or touch the penguins; they are wild animals and might bite.

Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve

Media from buffelsfontein

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour drive

Most tourists head east from Cape Town, but the north has hidden gems like Buffelsfontein Game and Nature Reserve. It’s a rare chance for a safari near the city, with fewer visitors for a personal touch.

We enjoyed a guided safari where we saw a variety of animals, including giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. With a group of just seven, we had plenty of chances to observe the wildlife up close without feeling rushed.

In addition to the safari, there’s also an interesting wine and olive-tasting tour. It added a nice touch to our day trip.

Pro Tip:
Book the exclusive safari and wine- and olive-tasting tour early, as spots are limited to seven guests. This unique opportunity combines wildlife viewing with a taste of local flavours, making for an unforgettable adventure.

Constantia

Media from grootconstantia

Distance from City Centre: 23-minute drive

Constantia is a charming suburb of Cape Town, nestled in a picturesque valley. It offers a fantastic wine scene with stunning mountain views, wine estates, and outdoor markets.

When I took a day trip to Constantia, we started our visit at Groot Constantia. It’s the oldest wine farm in South Africa and offers a lovely setting for wine tasting. We sipped on various wines while soaking up the sun in their outdoor dining area.

For those keen on a bit more adventure, the zipline tours in Constantia are a must-try. I’ve tried one of the longer ziplines here, and the view from above is stunning.

Pro Tip:
Stop at Constantia Village Shopping Center for a wide selection of fashion boutiques—perfect for last-minute travel essentials. Also, mark your calendar on the second and fourth Sundays of the month to explore their exclusive antiques market.

Gansbaai

Distance from City Centre: 2-hour drive

Gansbaai is a fantastic spot for a day trip, especially if you’re into marine life. Known for its shark cage-diving experiences, it offers an adrenaline-packed adventure, letting you get up close with great white sharks in their natural habitat.

Besides the sharks, you can also enjoy the “Big 5 Marine Safari,” which includes whales, dolphins, seals, and surprisingly, penguins. Even though shark sightings can’t be guaranteed, the chances are high in the area known as Shark Alley.

When I visited, I found the shark-diving experience thrilling and a unique way to connect with South Africa’s marine life.

Pro Tips:
Ensure you choose a tour operator committed to responsible practices, such as not baiting sharks.

Research and select companies that prioritise the safety of both marine life and divers, so you can enjoy the thrill without compromising your values.

Garden Route

Media from gardenroute

Distance from City Centre: 4-hour drive

The Garden Route is a stunning stretch along South Africa’s southern coast, running from Mossel Bay to Port Elizabeth. It’s packed with diverse attractions and natural beauty, so it’s worth dedicating more than just a day of exploration.

Here, we enjoyed fresh oysters in Mossel Bay, took in the stunning view from Knysna Heads, and relaxed on the beaches of Plettenberg Bay. We also crossed the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth.

We enjoyed the stunning views from the Eastern Head in Knysna and relaxed on the beautiful beaches of Plettenberg Bay, or “Plett.” Crossing the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth was thrilling and offered fantastic views of the national park.

Pro Tip:
For those staying without a vehicle, consider a 6-day tour which includes transport, meals, lodging, and visits to places like Addo Elephant Park, all at a reasonable cost. This way, you can enjoy the route’s highlights without the stress of planning.

Hermanus

Media from idodo_p

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour-and-30-minute drive

Hermanus is a must-visit for whale enthusiasts. Recognized globally for its excellent land-based whale watching, visitors flock to this town to see these majestic creatures.

I took a walk along the Cliff Path, which is an easy 10-kilometre trail that winds along the sea. The views are fantastic, and if you’re there during whale season, you might spot a few right from the shore.

After the hike, I stopped by Lemon Butta for some oysters. They were fresh and went perfectly with the sunset over the bay.

Pro Tip:
The best time to see whales is from June to December. The Hermanus Whale Festival in September is a highlight of this period. This event offers not only whale-watching but also street food, live music, and activities for all ages.

Hout Bay

Media from secretcapetown

Distance from City Centre: 31-minute drive

Hout Bay, a suburb of Cape Town, is often just a quick stop for travellers driving down Chapman’s Peak Drive. When I visited, I decided to check out a few of the activities that are often overlooked.

One of the highlights was snorkelling with Cape Fur Seals at Duiker Island. These seals are known for being friendly, and it was a unique experience to swim alongside them.

Another spot that’s worth a visit is the World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkey Park. It’s the largest bird park in Africa, home to over 3,000 birds from 400 species.

Pro Tip:
For a different perspective, try the Guided Kayaking tour. It’s a two-hour journey along the coast where you can learn about the area’s history and see marine life, including the Cape fur seal.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Distance from City Centre: 16-minute drive

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is one of those places in Cape Town that feels like a world of its own. It’s a massive space, being the largest botanical garden in Africa, and you could easily spend the whole day there.

One of the highlights of my visit is the Boomslang Aerial Walkway, which curves above the tree canopy and offers stunning views of the city. It’s a bit of a surreal experience, walking above the trees and seeing Cape Town from that angle.

The Skeleton Gorge hike is challenging but can reward you with a waterfall if there’s been recent rain, making the effort worthwhile. For a more relaxed experience, visit the endangered plants exhibit to learn about the unique fynbos of the region.

Pro Tip:
Book a comprehensive 9-hour tour that not only explores the lush Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens but also includes historical and wildlife experiences, from Nelson Mandela’s iconic speech site to penguin sightings and seal encounters.

Klein Karoo

Media from trailtalesouthafrica

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour-and-56-minute drive

The Klein Karoo is a semi-desert region not too far from Cape Town, and it’s well-known for its wine and ostrich farms. When I last visited, I made sure to take Route 62, which is a scenic drive through the area that takes you past some key towns.

Oudtshoorn is a standout, especially if you’re curious about the ostrich feather industry. I found it fascinating to learn about how this small town became such a hub for something so unique.

Swellendam is worth a stop; you can really feel the history as you explore the old buildings. Calitzdorp is a must for wine lovers. I couldn’t resist trying their famous port wine.

Pro Tip:
For adventure seekers, hiking through Swartberg Pass or going on a safari to spot the Big 5 are popular activities. It’s important to note that while safaris offer a chance to see wildlife, sightings of specific animals cannot be guaranteed.

Muizenberg Beach

Media from capetownetc

Distance from City Centre: 30-minute drive

Muizenberg Beach is a great destination known for its colourful beach houses and wide range of activities.

I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos before heading down to the water for a swim. The beach itself is ideal for a relaxed morning or afternoon, especially if you’re into surfing.

If you love surfing, you’ll enjoy Surfer’s Corner by the beach. For a more relaxed experience, you can take a leisurely stroll along the Muizenberg Catwalk, where you might even see some whales at certain times of the year.

Pro Tips:
You can join an Instagram tour to capture the best of Cape Town, including Muizenberg. If you’re planning a visit, I’d recommend spending a half-day here. It’s enough time to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the beach, and maybe even try your hand at surfing.

West Coast

Media from meirist

Distance from City Centre: 2-hour-and-36-minute drive

While many tourists opt for the eastern routes from Cape Town, I found the northern journey along the West Coast to be equally captivating. This route is quieter but full of coastal charm and local culture.

Langebaan, a coastal town, is well-loved for its sunny Calypso Beach and fresh seafood. I also enjoyed the beauty of Yzerfontein, which features the longest uninterrupted sandy beach in South Africa—perfect for spotting flamingos.

The West Coast National Park, which I explored in spring, transforms into a vibrant sea of wildflowers. I also had the chance to stay on a houseboat there, adding a unique experience to the trip.

Pro Tip:
Engage with local tour guides to enrich your journey with insider knowledge and support the community’s economy.

Clarence Drive

Media from pitstoplodge

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour-and-33-minute drive

If you’re renting a car, consider driving along Clarence Drive. I’ve found the views along this route, marked as R44 on maps, to be truly impressive, with its coastal scenery and the mountains draped in unique fynbos vegetation.

If you’re up for a swim, I’d recommend Betty’s Bay. It’s where I saw the Stony Point penguin colony—much less crowded and more natural than Boulders Beach.

For those seeking adventure, the sand dunes nearby provide opportunities for sandboarding. To complete your trip, visit the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens or explore the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

Pro Tips:
Start your journey early to bask in the serene morning ambience and avoid the afternoon crowds.

Don’t miss the chance to stop at the local markets along the way to sample regional delicacies and support community artisans.

Paternoster

Media from moiratimlin

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour-and-48-minute drive

Paternoster, a charming little town just a short drive from Cape Town, resembles a tranquil Greek fishing village. You’ll find lovely white cottages overlooking the chilly Atlantic Ocean and beaches dotted with classic fishing boats.

When we visited, we were drawn to Wolfgat, a standout restaurant known for its seafood and locally sourced ingredients. The food was fresh and beautifully presented, reflecting the town’s strong culinary scene

For a bit of shopping, Paternoster has some charming stores like Hobnobbery, Die Winkel Op, Coastal Soul, and Maneki, all near the waterfront. We found a mix of unique trinkets and beachwear that added to the local vibe.

Pro Tip:
Book at Wolfgat well in advance, as reservations fill up quickly due to its acclaim.

Elgin Valley

Media from jstander

Distance from City Centre: 1-hour-and-1-minute drive

The Elgin Valley is a stunning area nestled in the Overberg region, known for its rolling green hills and fresh mountain air. It’s often visited for a quick stop at the Peregrine Farm Stall for pies and fresh produce, but there’s so much more to discover here.

If you’re looking for adventure, the Elgin Adventure Centre is a great spot to rent a mountain bike and explore trails that match your skill level. I had a great time riding through scenic routes that were challenging but still enjoyable.

For those who crave a bit more adrenaline, Cape Canopy Tours offers an exhilarating zip-line experience in the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. I tried it and was amazed at how thrilling it was to soar above the treetops.

Pro Tip:
For a unique Elgin Valley experience, visit during the apple harvest season (February to May) to join in the festivities and taste the freshest fruits straight from the orchards.

Matjiesfontein

Media from matjiesfontein

Distance from City Centre: 2-hour-and-35-minute drive

Visiting the charming little village of Matjiesfontein feels like stepping back in time. I was surprised by how much history is packed into such a small place.

The village is centred around the Lord Milner Hotel, which has been around since 1884. Even if you’re just there for the day, it’s worth exploring the hotel’s historical corridors and grabbing a drink in the pub or enjoying lunch in the dining room.

The place has a relaxed, old-world feel that’s quite different from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town.

Pro Tips:
Don’t miss the opportunity to book the historical tour on the vintage red bus, a unique way to explore this quaint town’s rich heritage.
