If there’s one thing Pretoria knows how to do, it’s blending fun for all ages into a perfect outing. I decided to prove this point by planning a day out for my entire family—kids, grandparents, and all.
Trust me, when you try to entertain both a 5-year-old who’s obsessed with dinosaurs and a 70-year-old who prefers a quiet stroll in the park, you need a plan that’s as versatile as it is fun.
After combing through local spots, making a few phone calls, and consulting with friends, I put together a list of the top places in Pretoria where everyone can have a blast. So, here’s how our adventures unfolded and where you should head next!
Pretoria Zoo

Address: 232 Boom St, Daspoort 319-Jr

Operating Hours:
- Open daily – 9 AM to 4:30 PM
The Pretoria Zoo, the largest in South Africa, boasts over 3,000 animals, ensuring a captivating day out for all.
I took my niece there, and she couldn’t stop talking about the elephants and giraffes for weeks. We spent a good chunk of the day just wandering around, seeing everything from majestic lions to playful monkeys swinging from branch to branch.
One highlight was definitely the farmyard area, where she got to feed some of the friendliest goats I’ve ever seen. Plus, the cable car ride up the mountain was a hit with both of us. It offered a unique perspective of the zoo and its inhabitants.
Pro Tip: Plan a picnic at one of the many shaded spots for a relaxing break, and don’t miss the chance to use the braai facilities by the Apies River. |

The highlight of our visit was the impressive waterfall and the gentle hike, which provided a nice change of scenery with some elevation. The kids particularly enjoyed the variety of birds we spotted along the way.
