Job hunting can be pretty tough, especially when you don’t know where to look. It can be confusing, frustrating, and even demoralising looking everywhere and giving out your personal information in the hopes that someone will hire you. 

I’ve been there before, and I know a ton of people who have been struggling with the job hunt. Thankfully, there are some great resources out there to find listings and connections within South Africa, especially online! 

Here are some of the best job websites in the country to help your career move forward. 

Pnet

Pnet is one of the leading job hunting and online recruitment websites in the country. It has an extensive selection of roles, listings, and opportunities that you can filter by field, location, experience, or even by company!

Pnet takes a LinkedIn-meets-Indeed approach to job hunting by giving prospective applicants just as much exposure as the big corporate companies. They do this by allowing you to publicise your CV and letting recruiters contact you before you’ve even sent in a single application. 

I used Pnet when I was applying for my first-ever job, fresh out of college. I was contacted by recruiters and heard back from applications sent through this website more than the others I used. 

Career Junction

With over 20 years in the job recruitment space, Career Junction offers an intuitive job searching experience with pretty big and reputable companies. It’s an especially great option for looking for jobs in the IT and software development fields. 

The website’s UI is neatly organised by field, title, and location, and it allows job seekers to find opportunities with the biggest companies. These include Capitec Bank, iot.nxt, and even Amazon. 

I have a friend who works in IT, and he managed to land a pretty lucrative cybersecurity job by connecting with an employer through Career Junction. 

Recruitmymom

Recruit My Mom is, as the name would suggest, a job-hunting website primarily focused on providing job opportunities for women (especially mothers) of all ages and skill levels. They have an intensive set of services for job seekers and employers, including background checks and skill tests. 

The website hosts a comprehensive selection of job listings, all of which have detailed descriptions of the job and allow you to contact the company directly. The job types with the most listings on the website include administrative work, accountancy and bookkeeping, and tax administration. 

When my aunt lost her job during the pandemic, we immediately got her on Recruit My Mom. Thankfully, she was able to connect with a ton of employers despite her age, and she got back on her feet in no time with a new, high-paying job! 

Jobmail

Formerly a printed classifieds column, Job Mail is still one of the best job hunting websites for entry-level and high-turnover positions. Its wide audience and reach make it a great way for small businesses and fresh graduates alike to find new opportunities. 

It has over 20,000 free vacancies listed, with IT, engineering, and accounting having some of the most listings. It also provides job seekers with the option to upgrade their account to a paid plan, which unlocks even more listings. 

My friend, fresh from graduating, found a very stable job at a prestigious engineering firm through Job Mail. This was especially exciting, as he’d dreamt of being an engineer forever, and it helped him build a foundation for his career! 

Gumtree

While it’s primarily a classifieds and secondhand market website, Gumtree is also notable for its job listings. Gumtree specialises in listing blue-collar, retail/service work that’s high in demand and doesn’t require much in the way of work experience. 

It’s a great place for anyone to find a job because of their partner companies’ fast response rate and relatively quick hiring processes. The jobs on offer here range from trade skills like plumbing and construction to sales positions. 

My nephew wanted to find a job while he was in high school, and a listing from Gumtree thankfully let him provide for himself through a cashier job at a pawn shop. 

Careers24

Careers24 is one of the more recognisable job hunting websites in South Africa. It’s known for its diverse range of job listings, from more common fields like accounting to niche fields like explosives management and chemical research. 

The website is directly partnered with some pretty recognisable companies and brand names, such as their parent company Media24, Dis-Chem Pharmacies, and BET Software.

A friend of mine got a rare, lucrative job at a chemical engineering company through Careers24 and their extensive listings. It also helped that the site had email notifications for its users for listings that may interest them. 

Compujobs

Compujobs is one of the more popular job-seeking websites in South Africa, especially for people seeking work in the IT and tech fields. While it’s a relatively smaller job board than the others on this list, it’s still a great option for finding in-demand job opportunities. 

Something unique about Compujobs is that, while it also offers permanent, part-time, and fixed-term positions like the other sites on this list, it also offers paid and unpaid internships. 

A family member of mine, who needed an internship credit for college, got to take it at a nice software development company. It turned into a great opportunity for him, as his performance guaranteed him employment after college! 

Executive Placements

Executive Placements is a job-seeking website that specialises in senior management, directorial, and executive roles. While this site has most of the standard roles you’d look for, there’s a greater emphasis on career growth and work that offers a path to higher positions. 

As a site focused on filling out executive roles, they offer more extra services than most other job boards. They have a full team of writers to help out with optimising your CV, as well as an advanced job filter that can search through fields, salary ranges, and even required experience. 

A friend of mine, who really wanted to get into the corporate hierarchy and become a high-ranking official, used Executive Placements to land a pretty lofty administrative job. He’s now on his way to becoming vice CFO of the company! 

Indeed

Indeed is a classic, no-nonsense job search website known around the world for a straightforward, accessible job hunting experience. Its South African version is a one-stop shop for all your job searching needs, with positions of all types from all sorts of companies. 

It’s a particularly great choice for entry-level positions, especially because it has the most listings of this kind out of the competition. 

I remember using Indeed while I was between jobs, and it helped connect me to some companies and opportunities I would’ve never considered before! 

Bizcommunity

Bizcommunity, apart from being a trusted source when it comes to news about the PR and graphic design field, is the premier job source for work in the creative fields. It specialises in jobs pertaining to public relations, marketing, design, and journalism. 

True to its name, it allows aspiring creatives to not only work in that field but also to learn and meet experts in the community. The site also hosts seminars and workshops for graphic design and marketing, which is a huge plus. 

One of my friends, who is a passionate artist, was thankfully able to use her skills and the connections she’s made through Bizcommunity’s job listings in her career.
