Pros
- Full range of optometric services
- Has a Visual Therapy Centre
- Thorough visual examinations
- Offers reading and dyslexia assessments
- Holistic approach to patient care
- Great with kids
Cons
- Closed on weekends
There’s a lot to love abSunny Road Optometrist. The first thing that stood out to us was how many parents rave about how well they treat their children who come in as patients.
Dr. Ariella Meyerowitz, who heads the practice, is praised for her kindness, gentleness, and ability to connect well with kids. We loved hearing about her uncanny ability to make anxious children feel comfortable and at ease.
Bedside manner aside, we are impressed that Sunny Road offers the full range of optometric services, including contact lenses and low vision examinations. We like that their assessments are thorough and leave no stone unturned.
Each consultation lasts around an hour, which is a testament to how meticulous the assessment is. We love that although they use the latest technologies, Dr. Meyerowitz models a holistic approach, taking into consideration how other bodily systems affect vision.
Apart from these, Sunny Road also boasts its own Visual Therapy Centre, where they conduct various assessments, such as dyslexia and reading checks. These help identify any visual issues a child may be experiencing for early intervention.
Patients have high praises for how easy it is to book an appointment at Sunny Road. They also appreciate how their appointments never feel “rushed” as both the optometrist and staff make sure that they are able to make an accurate assessment of their eye health.

Pros
- Affordable lineup of frames
- Utilises the latest technology
- Excellent patient guidance
- Convenient location
- State-of-the-art facility
Cons
- Some reports of overselling
Look In Eyecare Specialists is headed by Dr. Naseeha Hossen, who is loved by her patients for her kindness and generous advice. Going into Look In is overall a wonderful experience, as the facility itself is spacious and beautiful, and boasts state-of-the-art technology and equipment.
We love that it is conveniently located in Randsteam Shopping Centre, which makes it easily accessible to plenty of patients. Those who frequent Look In like that its product range of frames is relatively affordable, and that there are plenty of options for different budgets.
Look In’s website efficiently displays its available frames, which we think is a great move. This gives patients an idea of the brands and lines that they carry, which provides them initial options to consult the optometrist about.
Going back to Dr. Hossen, we are impressed that she is known for her excellent guidance of patients, right down to choosing frames. Many optometrists tend to delegate this to their staff, but Dr. Hossen’s dedication to personalised service means that she goes the extra mile.
Another noteworthy example of going the extra mile is extending service hours for those who come from long days of work. This is something Look In doesn’t have to do but does anyway, in order to service people who need their expertise.

Pros
- Easy-to-browse online eyewear shop
- Open daily
- Spectacles feature German precision Free Form lens technology
- Great prices on specs
- Comprehensive eye care services
Cons
- Some reports of needing to improve customer relations
Although Torga Optical has several branches across South Africa, its Blairgowrie branch in Johannesburg stands out for the local team’s consistent excellence in customer service.
Many patients are incredibly happy with the way that they were treated at the Blairgowrie branch. The optometrist and staff are described as kind, friendly, and knowledgeable, able to support their needs and address their issues when they come into the store.
A quick glance at Torga Optical’s website also shows that they have gone great lengths to make their unique eyewear lines available from the comfort of home. What’s so wonderful about their spectacles is that they are produced in Torga Optical’s own lens manufacturing facility.
We like that Torga Optical has the upper hand on quality and craftsmanship as they make use of German precision Free Form lens technology, which allows them to go full-spectrum in terms of customisation.
This means that every patient with his or her own prescription gets spectacles made uniquely for him or her. Not only that, but because Torga Optical designs their own line in-house, prices are much more competitive given that they have taken out the middleman.
They also have comprehensive eye services that include screening for glaucoma and macular degeneration, as well as retinal scans.

Pros
- Accepts most medical aids and charges medical aid rates
- Offers a payment solution for the financially-challenged
- Lenses are custom-made in Germany
- Understanding towards unique patient issues and implications
Cons
- Operating hours unavailable
- Lenses may take longer to be delivered
One of the things that impressed us about Nettman Optometrists is how they make every effort to make their services accessible to everyone. We loved hearing that they accept most medical aids and charge medical aid rates.
This is a gamechanger in the industry, given that getting your eyes checked and having custom specs made can be expensive.
Not only do they try to be affordable as possible, but Nettman Optometrists also offers EyeFin, a payment solution to assist patients in paying for their spectacles. This is a feature that we’ve discovered is unique to them, so we give them top marks for that.
Despite making their rates friendly to most people, Nettman Optometrists continues to promise top-of-the-line products. Lenses are actually custom-made in Germany, shipped back to South Africa, and handed over to the patient.
Although this means that it will take longer before the client receives his or her spectacles, the quality and craftsmanship are worth the wait. Those who are unable to accommodate a longer lead time are often referred to local laboratories, which Nettman Optometrists can vouch for.
Finally, we love that the optometrists here are known for their extra patience and understanding towards customers who are suffering the physical effects of their eye issues. We think that empathy is one of the best qualities a doctor can have, and here they have it in spades.

Pros
- Extensive range of products
- Accepts all medical aids
- Online appointment scheduling available
- Excellent comprehensive eye exam
Cons
- Some reports of needing to improve customer service
G-Side Optometrists is yet another practice we admire for going great lengths to meet their patients where they are. They have an extensive range of products for all ages, from toddlers to the elderly, which we like.
One of the things we love about them is that they accept all medical aids, which means that patients won’t have to hold their breath and wait to see if their aid will be recognised. And for those who don’t have medical aid, G-Side offers budget-friendly options.
This shows us that the patient continues to be at the heart of why G-Side exists. It is almost easy to make products and services pricey given that it can be a necessity for many patients, but this practice puts patients first by allowing their rates to be as accessible as possible.
They are also one of the few practices that offer online appointment booking, which we like. This is especially helpful for parents who are bringing their kids in and don’t have the luxury of time to walk in and wait for the next available slot.
Apart from a thorough and detailed comprehensive eye exam, G-Side also offers assistance in driver’s license certifications and can screen for and monitor various optical diseases.

Pros
- Licensed optometrists
- Can handle various optical issues
- Years of experience
Cons
- Some reports of needing to improve customer service
Midrand Optometrists offers a range of optical services. We appreciate the company’s impressive line-up of doctors who have years of experience in the industry.
Furthermore, all their staff members are skilled enough to deal with various optical issues and tend to their patients’ needs.
One thing we’ like to point out, however, is their inconsistency with their customer service. Some of their previous patients have taken to sharing their experiences through online reviews.
Altogether, they present an effective service that addresses the optical needs and difficulties of everyone. Hence, we still recommend Midrand Optometrist to anyone in need of optical assistance.
