Pros

  • Consistent service from all physiotherapists on roster
  • Accurate and efficient diagnoses and treatments
  • Hands-on treatment approach
  • Treats all kinds of patients – from students to athletes
  • Experience in treating professional sports teams
  • Offers Normatec sessions
  • Also offers biokinetics services
  • Easy booking via WhatsApp

Cons

  • No telehealth option
  • No home visits

Unique to Johannesburg Physio + Bio is that it boasts the combination of two disciplines: physiotherapy and biokinetics. We love that their patients can experience the benefit of both practices to aid their recovery and achieve optimal health.

They are also one of the larger practices in Johannesburg, with three physiotherapists on duty. We like that patients observe and laud the consistency of their practice, with each physiotherapy offering the same calibre of service as the other two.

Johannesburg Physio + Bio employs a hands-on treatment approach, which includes a full assessment, diagnosis, and treatment plan. We love how their focus is on finding the root cause of the patient’s condition instead of treating external signs and symptoms.

This means that recovery is truly at the core of their approach. This is certainly paying off, as patients love how accurate and efficient they are in their diagnoses and how effective their treatments are.

Speaking of patients, we also appreciate that Johannesburg Physio + Bio caters to all kinds. Unlike other centres that focus on athletes or specialty cases, they can treat everyone – from the student who had an unfortunate sporting accident, to those suffering from chronic pain.

At the same time, they’ve had solid experience in treating professional sports teams, so athletes are still in great hands. They even now offer Normatec sessions for those who want to try out the equipment to boost recovery.

While we wish they had value-added services such as telehealth and home visits, we can’t complain about the overall patient experience. Booking is easy via WhatsApp, the specialists are all knowledgeable, kind, and supportive, and their treatment track record is sterling.

  • Modern equipment
  • Wide range of treatments
  • Spot-on diagnoses
  • Educates patient on condition / diagnosis

Cons

  • By appointment only

One thing that patients love about Bansda Physiotherapy is the holistic approach of its chief physiotherapist, Dr. Anisha.

By addressing not just the physical issues, but also the emotional, mental, and spiritual obstacles of the patient, we think that she is able to bring all aspects of the patient’s health in alignment. To us, this is key to a complete and meaningful recovery.

Dr. Anisha specialises in sports injuries, orthopaedics, paediatrics, women’s health, and rehabilitation, which is a clear indication of the types of patients she handles. Her patients benefit from world-class equipment and facilities, which we find impressive.

Investing in modern equipment tells us that Bansda Physiotherapy is invested in elevating and improving the patient experience, which many practices are not able to claim.

Dr. Anisha offers a wide range of treatments, such as dry needling, strapping and taping, sports massages, and trigger point and muscle spasm release. We like that on top of the usual physiotherapy techniques, she incorporates electrotherapy modality treatments.

This means that her goal for her patients is maximum and optimal recovery, since electrotherapy services increase the effectiveness of physiotherapy treatments.

Finally, patients love that her diagnoses are spot-on, and that she takes the time to educate them on their condition. She’s not simply a doctor who will send them out with a prescription, but will make sure that they understand the importance of the treatment and their cooperation.

Pros

  • Specialises in sport, spinal, and orthopaedic rehabilitation
  • Team of physiotherapy specialists
  • Offers telehealth and home visits
  • Does post-operative care
  • Charges medical aid rates
  • Online booking available

Cons

  • Limited range of physiotherapy services

One thing that stands out to us when we checked out Stewart Physiotherapy is how much patients love the chief physiotherapist, Dr. Amie Stewart. Her kindness and care are clearly evident in the way she treats patients, which to us is ultimately the most important factor.

Dr. Stewart and her team are focused on sport, spinal, and orthopaedic rehabilitation. While this limits the kind of patient issues they are able to treat, this speaks of specialisation, which means that the few things she hones in on, they do very well.

We are happy to hear that Dr. Stewart works with an extremely capable and talented team of specialists, which means that patients can get excellent care for the exact issues they came in for.

A great thing about Stewart Physiotherapy is that they offer both telehealth and home visits. This definitely sets them apart from other practices as it adds service options that increase convenience for patients, especially those with challenging physical limitations.

They also do post-operative care, which is a discipline in itself. We like that they collaborate and coordinate with the patient’s surgeon, which means that they are in sync in terms of the post-op treatment plan and do not have any blind spots from not knowing the surgeon’s assessment.

Patients appreciate that they charge medical aid rates, which makes them a lot more accessible. Online booking is also available and is relatively straightforward – again, always a good thing in our book.

Pros

  • Different appointment booking options for the patient’s convenience
  • Charges medical aid rates
  • Owner has almost 10 years of clinical experience
  • Also treats post-Covid patients with lung issues
  • Stays abreast of medical advances, including technology
  • Thorough assessment of each patient’s unique condition

Cons

  • Can only accommodate a limited number of patients per day

Despite being a one-man team, Dr. Faeda de la Rey, who manages Faeda de la Rey Physiotherapy manages to impress her patients with her knowledge of various physical conditions.

To us, this is a feat in itself as she is a generalist practitioner, which means that she needs to be familiar with all sorts of physiotherapy-related concerns.

In addition to this, patients love how data-driven she is. We like hearing that she really takes the time to research every patient’s condition before recommending any treatments, which shows us that she is thorough about understanding each case and its complexities.

She is also passionate about keeping her ears on the ground. Patients describe her as someone who keeps herself updated on the latest developments in her specialty, including evolutions in medical technology and equipment.

Coupled with her almost-10 years of clinic experience, we think that this makes her many patients’ dream physiotherapist. Not only is she exceptionally good at her profession, but she also has a learning and innovative mindset.

She also charges medical aid rates, much to the relief of many financially-challenged patients. We love that she has made herself accessible to people, and this tells us that she has remained a largely patient-centric doctor, which is honestly a rarity these days.

Pros

  • Treats a wide range of conditions
  • Hands-on and patient-centred approach
  • Online booking available
  • Warm and welcoming space

Cons

  • Closed on weekends
  • Charges private rates

Dr. Brendan Shahim is another talented generalist in the physiotherapy practice. We appreciate how his in-depth knowledge of sports contributes to his expertise in treating an extensive spectrum of conditions, including back and neck pain, chest conditions, and sports injuries.

One thing that his practice constantly highlights is their hands-on and patient-centred approach. We are glad to hear that his patients can vouch for this, as many of them love him for taking the time to get to know them beyond their medical condition, which strengthens trust.

We don’t often get a lot of feedback on the design of the facility itself, so we were impressed by the compliments on Dr. Shahim’s clinic. The space is described as warm and welcoming, which we feel is such an important factor in mood-setting and putting patients at ease.

Apart from this, Dr. Shahim also offers appointment booking online, making scheduling convenient and seamless for all types of patients.

Our only (very minor) issues with Brendan Shahim Physiotherapy is that they are closed on weekends, and that they charge private rates. Although most of these fees fall within the price tier of medical aid, there are still some exceptions.

All in all, we feel that Dr. Shahim is the kind of physiotherapist that would appeal to more sensitive clients who value meaningful doctor-patient relationships.

Marilu van der Hoven Physiotherapy is ran by Marilu, a qualified physiotherapist with over 7 years of experience working to treat a variety of injuries.

Before putting up her own clinic she worked at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Donald Gordon and Life Flora Hospital.

What we like about her is that she has extensive experience when it comes to treating injuries and pays particular attention to the root cause of the injury.

We think it’s a great thing that she doesn’t simply treat the symptom but gets to the main cause of the injury to ensure recovery and facilitate speedy return to activity.

At her clinic, any patient that comes is is sure to be properly assessed and treated as she is highly committed to providing the highest quality of care.

We find that this is an excellent place for anyone looking to relieve and treating injuries through their various services, which include manual therapy, surgery rehab, dry needling, sports injury, upper and lower quarter rehabilitation, kinesio and dynamic taping, patient specific exercise, and lymphoedemia.

Cons

  • Operating hours unavailable on website

The Back Clinic offers various services that are effective for the treatment of back and neck pain.

Their team provides treatment solutions from helping patients cope with sudden pain to long-term conditions.

What we like about them is how their treatments avoid back or neck surgery where possible in many cases.

We like how their Doctors, Physiotherapists and Biokineticists use The DBC protocol, a specialised treatment program developed in Finland. This combines careful application of physical rehabilitation techniques as well as specialised equipment to treat back and neck conditions.

We’ve heard of so many successful outcomes from their clinic and this is why we highly recommend them if you need physiotherapy services.
