Live your cottage-core fantasies at the best strawberry-picking spots in Johannesburg
There’s a saying that goes “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade,” right? Well, what do you do if life gives you strawberry-picking spots in Johannesburg? You do the obvious thing and pick strawberries, of course!
Kidding aside, you really do need to grab the opportunity to do some strawberry-picking when in the city, as these unique spots offer a one-of-a-kind experience that’s hard to come by in South Africa!

MacFresh Deli & Berry Farm is one convenient berry-picking spot, as it has greenhouses with plants organised and lined up for easy picking. In fact, even our kids managed to easily pick these berries with no hiccups!
We also like that their berry farm is open most days of the year for berry picking due to the controlled environment where their berries are grown.
Plus, they have an amazing restaurant nearby where you can score snacks and meals (like burgers and fries for just ZAR 99) after a day of berry picking.
Pro Tip: While the berry farm is open most days for berry picking, we still recommend that you check out their Facebook for any schedule updates. Their feed also blasts information about upcoming events like quiz nights or promos. |

The Cradle Berry Farm doesn’t just offer some fresh strawberries but it’s also one of the best venues in South Africa for events like weddings and anniversaries.
They also market their berry picking as a fun family day out, and we agree!
Just like the other all-natural strawberry farms, we had to wait until September to be able to book a berry-picking slot, but once we got here, we understood why this farm was so worth it.
We had our baskets filled with delicious strawberries from their fields. Afterwards, we enjoyed them under the shade of trees in their picnic area.
Pro Tip: Due to the seasonal nature of berry-picking activities, check their Facebook for any updates. Their feed also offers alternative activities (e.g. picnic and halal breakfast) while waiting for strawberry picking. |

Ganico Organic Farm is the farm you need to be if you want variety in the produce you pick. While this farm primarily boasts organic pomegranates, they also offer berry, lemon, and vegetable picking.
Depending on the season, you can pick your own fruits and veggies.
Plus, since they are an organic farm, their produce is pesticide-free, which means we didn’t have any issues sinking our teeth into some of the berries we picked. No washing required!
Pro Tip: If you can’t drop by their farm to pick your own veggies and fruits, then you can order from their online shop. |

Scoring herbicide-free strawberries is possible if you pick and eat some from the Strawberry Farm. Due to the all-natural approach of this farm, they only accept visitors during berry picking season which starts around September.
Fortunately, we got to enjoy berry picking straight from their fields, and their claim of not using pesticides and herbicides is true. We ate some of the strawberries we picked without washing them.
They also have a nearby restaurant that serves amazing strawberry milkshakes, especially if you have one (like we did) after a day of picking strawberries under the sun!
Pro Tip: Book your preferred date of berry picking once the strawberry picking season starts. |
