Pros

  • Beautiful well-maintained gardens perfect for an intimate wedding
  • Well-plated and delicious food
  • Superb stone architecture
  • Friendly catering staff
  • Quiet and serene environment
  • Use of entire venue is included in the fee
  • 24-hour concierge service for overnight guests
  • In-house decor and floral services
  • Online event planner

Cons

  • Limited parking space
  • Expensive
  • Might prove tricky for people who have difficulties with stairs
  • Challenging location

One look at Shepstone Gardens and it is easy to understand why so many clients instantly fell in love with the venue. With its lovely gardens and beautiful structures, we reckon it would make it to the top of any bride’s list for wedding venues.

Shepstone Gardens is known to host intimate to mid-sized weddings of 80 to 150 guests, but we think it would be absolutely perfect for an 80-100-guest event. At that size, there is just enough room to stretch out and enjoy the premises without losing your spot.

Of course, the key selling point of Shepstone Gardens is its look and feel. The space features magnificent stone architecture that makes a great backdrop for wedding photos, as well as dreamy structures that one could use for any part of the event.

What we love about this venue is that the hire fee already includes the entire place, so clients don’t have to worry about guests from another event accidentally going to theirs or causing distractions.

We think that couples would love the flexibility the venue offers with its different spots – there’s the enchanting glass marquee, the traditional chapel, the warm and welcoming grand hall, and the stunning natural arch.

The beauty of having several spaces like this is that clients have a better opportunity to customise their special day to their hearts’ desires without it looking like someone else’s wedding.

We are likewise impressed by their online planning service, as clients no longer have to wait to visit the venue to plan their wedding or at least canvass their rates. From the guest size to additional services such as baristas and event coordination, the planner has it all.

Shepstone Gardens boasts its own decor and floral team, which we think is smart as it would be best to have people who know the venue very well to take lead in enhancing it. They also have partnerships with other suppliers that clients can look into when they book.

While we love everything the venue offers, its limited parking space and location may dampen the spirits of some couples. Those that don’t arrive early enough may have to park outside, which some are not comfortable with as the venue is located in a more challenging part of old Joburg.

Shepstone Gardens, with its gorgeous views, is also understandably expensive. But we think that couples who fall in love with its ambiance may find the price tag worth it.

Pros

  • Amazing rooftop for an outdoor evening wedding
  • Rustic industrial design
  • Can accommodate up to 500 guests
  • Beautiful view of the Sandton skyline
  • Interesting custom furniture
  • Unique range of locally crafted beers and premium boutique wines
  • In-house styling available

Cons

  • Located in a remote industrial area

More adventurous couples looking for an unexpectedly beautiful space in the city would love Mea Culpa. While some people may find its location a bit underwhelming (it’s in Kew, an industrial suburb), most change their minds when they enter the venue itself.

We absolutely love Mea Culpa’s rustic industrial vibe. Everything is sleek, sophisticated, yet charming at the same time – from the manicured greens and interesting accent pieces to its themed spaces.

Couples can choose from the Black Box, White Room, and Rooftop to hold their ceremony or reception, with each space able to host up to 500 guests. We like the generosity of space, which enables Mea Culpa to accommodate a variety of wedding sizes.

While all of the function rooms are well-designed, we think that the Rooftop makes a particularly unforgettable venue to say “I Do.” With a spectacular view of the Sandton skyline, it would be a great fit for evening celebrations, as guests can enjoy the festivities under a blanket of stars and amidst a backdrop of twinkling city lights.

Couples booking Mea Culpa also have the option to avail of additional services. We particularly appreciate the beverage packages, which feature an exquisite range of beers and wines.

What we love about these packages is that they don’t put a cap on the number of glasses or bottles. Guests can enjoy unlimited drinks throughout the event, which also puts the couple’s mind at ease in terms of budget.

While Mea Culpa in itself is already a beautiful space, couples also have the option to avail of in-house styling services or bring in their own stylist, which enables them to make the space their own.

All in all, we think that Mea Culpa is a hidden treasure in the city, promising an unforgettable wedding day to couples who can appreciate the potential of the location.

Pros

  • Peaceful location
  • Intimate ambiance amidst lush greenery
  • Beautiful mid-century design

Cons

  • Ideal for small wedding parties only
  • Fully booked for 2022

Dunkelder is a dream destination for couples looking to do an intimate wedding, which they specialise in. Located in one of the leafiest suburbs in Joburg, it also seems like a photographer’s haven.

Everywhere we look, there is something beautiful in the space. From the gorgeous home to the well-planned spaces, we can envision so many wonderful moments transpiring from different parts of the day.

The home itself sets the tone for the intimacy of the event. It is warm, welcoming, and inviting, from the well-lit foyer to the sleek and charming theatre leading the way to the lush outdoors

It also features a bar and lounge for buffets and beverages, a veranda that would make the perfect backdrop to a “backyard”-themed celebration, and a garden and tennis court for ceremonies, receptions, welcome drinks, and photos.

What we love about the space is that no part of it is wasted. We also appreciate that the Dunkelder team already provides thoughtful, tried-and-tested suggestions on what a space could be used for.

The home also features one of the most breathtaking bridal rooms we’ve ever seen, with beautiful French doors and a Juliette balcony that makes the perfect scene for a bridal photo. It overlooks the garden, which we think gives the bride the spotlight she deserves.

The only limitation to Dunkelder is its size, which is why it can only cater to smaller wedding parties of up to 40 people. At the same time, the high demand for the space also means that it is fully booked for the year – so couples looking to get married next year should already make reservations.

Pros

  • Reasonably-priced packages for different budgets
  • Efficient staff servicing
  • Delicious menu options
  • Stunning views
  • Noteworthy bar service
  • Accessible location
  • Beautiful scenery
  • Excellent wedding planning services
  • Fantastic natural backdrops, whether summer or winter

Cons

  • Some criticisms on contract adjustments for unforeseen circumstances
  • Limited to intimate weddings only due to space size

Another venue perfect for smaller weddings, The Forest Walk is an ideal destination for couples who want to be surrounded by nature. Former clients have commended the venue for being able to establish itself as a good option for both winter and summer weddings.

One of the standout compliments The Forest Walk consistently receives is the quality of the food offered. Guests and couples alike commend the venue for delivering excellent-quality food, as well as brinks, on the day.

For us, this is great feedback to get as a wedding venue. Most of these places, while offering great spaces, are notorious for sub-par catering given the number of dishes they need to produce for each wedding party.

Location-wise, clients love The Forest Walk as it is easily accessible from Joburg and even Pretoria. It doesn’t disappoint in terms of experience, as naturally-beautiful backdrops of nature await guests attending their family and friends’ weddings.

Another thing that we love most about The Forest Walk is its well-priced wedding packages. They were crafted with different budgets and themes in mind, so it gives couples the flexibility to decide how they want to execute their vision of their wedding.

We love that the packages were also created with different seasons in mind. One would think that an outdoor location wouldn’t be ideal for a winter wedding, but The Forest Walk has a package specially made for that.

Unfortunately, there have been some one-off criticisms on the way contracts were handled given the unforeseen implications of the pandemic. However, on a much larger scale, The Forest Walk is highly praised for its efficient and thorough wedding planning services.

Pros

  • Reasonable prices
  • Excellent food
  • Extra-mile servicing
  • Generous parking spaces
  • Good security
  • Easily accessible from Randburg CBD
  • Honeymoon Suite available
  • Can accommodate up to 180 guests

Cons

  • One-off criticism of gravel road leading to the venue

One of the bigger venues in our list, North Haven can accommodate up to 180 people at a time, making it perfect for mid-sized weddings.

A definite plus for us is its location, as it is a mere 15 minutes away from the Randburg CBD. It’s a perfect wedding getaway for couples looking for that country-themed aesthetic well within reach of the comforts of the city.

Former guests and clients commend it for its reasonable prices, as well as consistently delicious food. Some even point out that the team goes above and beyond in service, offering even airport pickup and printing assistance even though it is not necessarily within their scope of work.

Another great perk for guests is generous parking, which is essential in wedding venues. Given that the space can accommodate a larger number of attendees, ample space for vehicles ensures peace of mind for everyone.

North Haven even features a gorgeous Honeymoon Suite for newlyweds so that they can stay over for the night. We think that this is a very special touch, given that most newlyweds are exhausted at the end of the day and would love a great place to crash in before they regroup the following day.

There is a one-off comment on difficulty accessing the venue itself due to the gravel road leading up to it. We are hopeful that North Haven has already resolved this issue and has made accessibility even better.
