Located in the middle of two popular green spaces in Johannesburg (Delta Park and Johannesburg Botanical Garden), Victory Park is a great suburb if you’re an avid bird watcher.
We checked out Delta Park to visit the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary where we spotted different bird species (park staff said there are around 200 species here!). These include birds like the Woodland Kingfisher and European Bee Eater.
Aside from these birds, your loved ones might also get the chance to spot some cute resident mammals. Keep your eyes peeled for the slender mongoose, large spotted genet, and striped mice.
Pro Tip: Aside from bird watching, you can also just explore the sanctuary’s surrounding areas to experience its diverse environs. These include relaxing trails, lush forests, and scenic views of three different dams. |

While bonding over picnic snacks, we brought our kids to stroll and appreciate the park’s colourful plants.
If you want a more challenging hike, you can check out the southern border of the park and take on the longer Braamfontein Spruit Trail.
Pro Tip: We also recommend that you coordinate with the Detal Park Visitor Centre via their phone number 011 888 4831 if you want to learn about the programmes they offer. They hold holiday programmes for kids and adults tackling various wildlife-related issues. |

Delta Cafe & Don Quixote is a lovely diner we tried out while near Craighill Road, and we were impressed with what this quaint cafe has to offer! It offered a great view of Delta Park’s lush greenery and savoury meals that we really enjoyed.
We highly recommend their scrambled eggs and bacon in a bun if you want something to grab and go or do what we did and have a full breakfast (e.g. egg on toast and chicken livers) before enjoying the sights of the nearby Delta Park.
