This Mother’s Day, I’m taking a cue from my own heart. It’s not about finding the perfect gift or grand gesture, though those can be nice. Instead, it’s about creating memories that will last.

My recent visit to the Farm enchanted me, particularly the tractor ride, where we roamed among a million blooming roses. The highlight was our cheerful tractor driver, who would pause to pluck roses and hand them to us, adding joy to our journey.

South Africa offers a plethora of stunning botanical gardens, each with a unique charm. Taking a leisurely stroll through these gardens on Mother’s Day is a heartfelt gesture that allows moms to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature.

Among these botanical wonders, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden stands out as a crown jewel. With its expansive grounds and captivating canopy walk, this garden promises an enchanting experience for the entire family. 

Equally captivating is the Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden, 30 km west of Johannesburg. On our last visit, we marvelled at the 70-metre-high Witpoortjie Waterfall and the unique breeding pair of Verreaux’s eagles.

It was our first time fly fishing, and the hotel staff was incredibly helpful, providing us with all the necessary gear and some handy tips.

We were amazed at how easy it was to get started and how exciting it was to catch our first trout. Spending the day by the water, chatting and enjoying the beautiful scenery, made for a memorable Mother’s Day.

Ride a bike route along Sea Point Promenade

Sea Point Promenade offers a picturesque and enjoyable ride along the Atlantic coastline. The route, which stretches from the Mouille Point lighthouse to the end of Sea Point, provides perfect biking weather in May—warm in the sun and cool in the shade.

We rented bikes from UpCycles, which offers affordable hourly rates, and had a delightful ride. We made sure to stop at one of the food kiosks for a refreshing cup of coffee and some delicious fish and chips.

Along the way, we admired the public art installations, including the iconic “Mandela Sunglasses,” and enjoyed the various scenic viewpoints.

For a safe and enjoyable ride, make sure 1) your bike is properly sized for you and 2) your brakes are in check. Remember to wear a helmet, follow traffic rules, signal your turns, and stay alert.

uShaka Marine World in Durban is a top-rated marine theme park with the world’s fifth-largest aquarium, uShaka Sea World. When my family and I visited, we were amazed by the close encounters with sharks, large fish, and rays.

One of the best parts was snorkelling in the lagoon, where we swam right alongside the sea creatures. For thrill-seekers, the Wet’n Wild water park has some exciting slides, including the highest slide in the southern hemisphere.

After all the excitement, we relaxed on the sandy uShaka beach. To top off the day, we explored the Village Walk, which has charming shops and cafes that gave us a taste of African village life.

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa at the Waterfront was unlike any museum I’d seen before. The huge circular concrete structure was once grain silos.

Inside, it’s even more impressive. The atrium feels like a giant cathedral with its high ceilings and natural light streaming in through the windows.

We explored different floors dedicated to things like photography, costumes, and moving images. My favourite part was the rooftop garden, where you can walk among sculptures and see views of the whole city and the water.

Pro Tip:
After exploring, treat your mom to a relaxing break at the café and bar on the sixth floor, where you can savour the stunning views. Don’t forget to visit the museum shop to find a one-of-a-kind gift that will make her day even more special.

There’s nothing quite like treating Mom to a sunset cruise with Waterfront Boat Tours on Mother’s Day. 

We boarded the luxury teak-decked catamaran and spent most of the time reclining on the comfortable cushion seating as we sailed out into Table Bay.

South Africa boasts a wealth of beautiful beaches, and our top picks for Mother’s Day outings are Camps Bay in Cape Town, Durban’s North Beach, and Santos Beach in Mossel Bay.

Camps Bay was stunning with its view of the 12 Apostles and the Atlantic Ocean. The beach itself was ideal for relaxing on soft sand and watching the kids play in gentle waves, while the promenade offered fresh juices and handmade crafts.

North Beach is great for family fun with bodyboarding and skating in warm waters and wide sandy shores. 

For a quieter option, Santos Beach in Mossel Bay offers peaceful surroundings, Victorian pavilions, and beachside train carriage accommodations.
