Top Assisted Living in Johannesburg for Your Golden Years

✔ Living environment - We assessed the living spaces for cleanliness, comfort, and accessibility. Rooms, communal areas, and outdoor spaces should be well-maintained and designed to feel homelike and welcoming. ✔ Safety and security - The facility should have robust safety measures, including secure premises, emergency response systems, and regular health and safety checks to ensure the well-being of all residents. ✔ Amenities and activities - We looked into facilities that offer a range of amenities and engaging activities, such as fitness programs, social events, and recreational outings, to keep residents active and socially connected. ✔ Quality of care - We checked if the facility has trained and compassionate staff available 24/7 to provide personalised care, including assistance with daily activities, medication management, and health monitoring.

Do you have a senior needing daily assistance or are you a family member researching care options for an elderly relative? Elder care is a serious matter that needs to be carefully researched before a decision is made.

We were attracted by the occupational therapy programme at Nazareth House. It offers a unique, person-centred approach tailored to each resident’s needs, abilities, and preferences. However, some of the villages have lengthy waiting lists.

Another noteworthy thing about this centre is its 24/7 nurse assistance. All its nurses are registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

The newly renovated frail care unit features modern finishes and electronic beds, offering an ideal blend of comfort and functionality. We were happy to see access-controlled entry, CCTV, and 24/7 on-site security personnel.

Hospitals are nearby for emergencies, and weekly shopping trips are organised by the House. And for caregivers needing a break, short-term respite care is also available.

Pros

  • Specialised dementia care
  • Occupational therapy programme
  • Respite care option
  • 24/7 nurse assistance

Cons

  • Some villages have long waiting lists

San Sereno, part of Auria Senior Living in Bryanston, earned top honours as one of the five winners of the Argentum 2020 Senior Living by Design Award. Of course, we fully expected that this would reflect in upmarket pricing, and we were right.

The top-tier senior living experience includes on-demand services like laundry, housekeeping, golf cart shuttle, concierge, and 24/7 emergency response. The price to pay for club-like assisted living, though, ranges from R30,000 to R60,000 per month.

Still, it’s undeniably a superb option for elderly loved ones who are entering their golden years. Its frail care services are underlined by 24/7 nursing services, but the residents are free to do their daily activities unassisted.

There’s also an option for home-based care for those who don’t wish to leave their homes.

We do wish Auria offers care options among seniors who aren’t quite 70 years old yet, though.

Pros

  • Well-appointed living options
  • 24/7 nursing services
  • Offers home-based care

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Only available for 70 years old and above

June’s Haven is a cosy, exclusive home in Parktown West, accommodating up to 20 residents. It’s ideal for those who want more privacy in their golden years.

It offers frail care, specialising in dementia and Alzheimer’s care, palliative care, and comprehensive frail care for the elderly. Its staff can also assist and accompany residents to outside medical appointments and errands (transport fees are added).

Thoughtful touches like a weekly hairdresser appointment and shopping for personal extras add to the overall quality of living here.

June’s Haven has affordable monthly rates at R19,900 for a private room and R14,900 for a shared room. That said, don’t expect luxe amenities, though the accommodations are comfortable, clean, and have a homey look and feel.

Pros

  • Special focus on Alzheimer’s care
  • Can assist in outside medical checkups and errands

Cons

  • Can only accommodate up to 20 residents

Angels are real, you can find them here

“June’s Haven provides a wonderful, safe sanctuary for anyone struggling with the challenges of age and memory loss. My family and I will forever be eternally grateful to the wonderful management and staff who nurtured our loved one and brought her back from the abyss she had wandered down. I highly recommend June’s Haven for anyone who doesn’t know where to turn when a loved one suffers from Dementia or Alzheimer’s. Angels are real, you can find them here.” – Gary Room, Google Review

Both the management & staff showed my ailing mother only kindness and love

“My experience of “June’s Haven” has been nothing but exceptional! Both the management & staff showed my ailing mother only kindness and love during her stay there. The food was homemade and was both scrumptious and nutritious. The staff kept me constantly updated via WhatsApp on my mother’s condition during the COVID lockdown and they went out of their way to ensure that she always had company when she was too frail to get out of bed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Debbie, Joy and Charity along with your team of incredible staff.” – Laura Katus, Google Review
