The best indoor activities in Johannesburg bring weather-proof fun!

In most cities, your weekend plans are at the mercy of Mother Nature. But in Jozi? We don’t let pesky heat waves or rainfall mess with the vibe.

Most of the props go to our indoor adventure joints, honestly. We’re talking inflatable zones where you can move like ninjas, science centres with stars and dinos, and even pamper havens for a Sunday breather or cuppa.

Well, can’t fit them all in the intro, can we? So if you want more deets, scroll down.

Decode mysteries at Hashtag Escape

Address: Bedford Square Shopping Centre, Van Der Linde Rd, Bedfordview

Contact Details: +27 73 722 0551

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Sat – 10 am to 8:30 pm
  • Sun – 10 am to 7 pm

Website

Hashtag Escape had our brains working out big time. Those rooms were well-crafted, both in terms of immersion and puzzle design, so each win felt special.

Big ups to the puzzle masters, too, especially James. They stuck to the schedule, were quite warm, and added some hilarity when things got too tense.

Now, here’s the trick: start with Closure. It’s great for rookies, and who wouldn’t want to play as paranormal experts investigating a haunted house’s secrets?

Tip: Set your corporate event here. Their rooms can accommodate up to 26 players.

Bounce like a shinobi at Total Ninja

From totalninjasr

Address: Shop U61, Stoneridge Centre, Hereford Rd, Modderfontein

Contact Details: +27 10 630 0611

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Fri – 10 am to 9 pm
  • Sat to Sun – 9 am to 9 pm

Website

If you ever thought you could do better than Ninja Warriors’ contestants, Total Ninja is where you can prove it. After all, it’s Africa’s largest obstacle-slash-inflatable course.

What to do depends on how you roll. Most activities revolve around dodging moving logs while bouncing on inflatables.

However, it’s Warped Walls our wannabe shinobi are mad about. The challenge is to run up a curved wall and hit the top—sounds easy, but trust us, even adults fumble here.

Tip: Families of two adults and two under-16s or one adult and three under-16s have less to pay every Friday and Sunday.

Spin and shoot at The Fun Company

From thefuncompanysa

Address: Shop FF20-FF27, The Zone @ Rosebank, Baker St, Rosebank

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Thu – 11 am to 11 pm
  • Fri to Sat – 10 am to 12 am
  • Sun – 10 am to 10 pm

Website

I pulled into The Fun Company with the fam, and it’s one decision I don’t regret. The high-energy indoor attractions, like spinning bumper cars and the laser maze, had the youngins pumped until 11 pm.

They especially went wild at the laser tag arena, thanks to its intense pace and flashy setup. The OG arcade is a close second—could’ve been first if they made their shots and won e-tickets, but that’s life.

Tip: Prices are halved on Tuesdays.

We left Sci-Bono Discovery Centre feeling smarter and with our curiosities thoroughly satisfied.

You see, this acclaimed science centre houses over 400 displays, like Wonders of Rocks, an internationally acclaimed exhibit featuring ancient Lascaux paintings.

Technological advancements get to shine, too, and most can be played with, like the VR installations. That said, none made my kids focus more than those massive and moving dinos.

Tip: You can throw birthday parties here.

  • Sun – 9 am to 6 pm

Website

Good luck dragging yourselves away from BOUNCE Inc. This indoor trampoline park has tons of bouncy attractions that one afternoon might not satisfy your kids…or you.

If you ask us, starting with the free-jump arena is the proper way to experience it. The zone has interconnected walls and trampolines meant for freestyle moves.

Then there are the more competitive sections, like the Slam Dunk and Dodgeball areas. Both play like the classic games, only this time, you can jump higher than LeBron or dodge throws by flipping.

Tip: You can save by booking online.

Contact Details: +27 11 717 1390

Operating Hours: Daily – 7 pm to 5 am

You don’t need a NASA-level budget for an interstellar experience. A jaunt to Wits Anglo American Digital Dome will do.

The venue’s 360° shows on cosmic events are next-level. Ten Sony GTZ 380 projectors beam out visuals in 8K, while the 8.2 surround sound further amps the immersion.

Every visit is also different. On our last trip, we saw celestial bodies collide, but yours might be a physics-based simulation of stars or a journey toward deep space.

Tip: The venue can be hired for lectures or workshops.

Artjam at Nunu’s Creative MA

Address: Sh op 27, The Piazza, Melrose Arch Shopping Centre, Atholl Oaklands Rd, Birnam

Contact Details: +27 11 684 1608

Operating Hours: Daily – 9 am to 6 pm

Artjamming is an activity where you just paint, let loose, and not worry about making the next Mona Lisa.

How it works is that you pay a fixed price. The friendly staff will then provide your artistic tools, like blank canvases, non-toxic paints, and brushes.

Usually, there’s no step-by-step business, just free-form art with chill tunes as the backdrop. Going for guided paint sessions isn’t off the menu, though, especially for private events.

Tip: Sunday is often the least crowded day.

Race junkies get their Need for Speed fix at Indy Kart. Hardly a surprise; this indoor space is South Africa’s biggest for go-karting. Expect wild turns!

You’ll get behind SOD RT8 go-karts, a modern beast designed for safety and giving riders a ‘true race car’ feel.

Then there’s the 457-metre track. It has smooth bends for rookies to practice on, but don’t think it’s not for vets. There are technical corners that need advanced skill and experience.

Tip: Bring your cards. They’re 100% cashless.

If you’re yet to feel the rush of sliding down The Slope, a 75-metre-long and 20-metre-high ski deck, this is your sign, daredevil.

Here, you’ll get a taste of zooming down a high-speed, blue surface, with sprinklers ensuring the descent is smooth—and that you get a nice wash on the way down.

It gets better at night, when spotlights illuminate the deck with shifting colours. Even the tubes get lit up, making them look like flying saucers.

Tip: Hate packing food? Good news—the venue has a restaurant.

What’s better than bowling, you ask? Glow-in-the-dark bowling at Xtreme, of course. All the lanes and pins here are lit up by UV lights, and even the balls are called ‘glowballs’ for a reason.

Beyond that, it’s a lekker spot for cocktails and beers. You’ll chug them down in a low-key space that combines the looks and feel of a 60s bar and an American Western diner, ideal for taking life easy.

From thebioscope

Address: 44 Stanley Ave, Milpark

Our movie buffs have lost count of how many times they’ve been to The Bioscope Independent Cinema. Can’t blame them, as the independent movie house has a more ‘intimate’ vibe than commercial ones.

Cult classics get the most screen time here, but you can also swing by for handpicked modern films.

Aside from that, the 47-seater cinema hosts live music shows, stand-up comedy gigs, and even special forums.

Tip: Consider hiring the place for a couples screening.

Northgate Ice Rink is where we beat the heat without burning too much cash. Typically, entrance only sets us back R105, and skate hires start at just R50.

Those with Bambi legs don’t need to panic as well. They offer family-friendly lessons, and your smaller skaters can opt for little penguins as their aid.

Now and then, the rink also throws a jol, like that March 2025 foam party.

Kiddos can rock the walls, too, thanks to the child-friendly sessions.

Tip: More perks, like discounts and free workshops, await members.
