Pros
- Well-established institution
- Experienced in attending to several professional sports teams
- Well-staffed with a well-rounded team of credible professionals
- Offers a broad range of physio services
- Commended for superb patient care
Cons
- High patient caseload
- Can be unresponsive sometimes
Johannesburg Physio & Bio is arguably one of the leading physical therapy clinics in the city and even nearby areas.
They’re a well-established health and wellness institution and are actually the most- and highest-rated clinic that deals with physiotherapy and biokinetics.
The clinic has substantial experience in attending to several professional sports teams, which is one of the reasons why many prefer their services.
We love that their solid track record is maintained by high-performing and dedicated health and wellness practitioners.
Johannesburg Physio & Bio is well-staffed with a versatile team of credible professionals experienced in human movement, injuries and therapy, and rehabilitation. They have two separate teams that focus on either physiotherapy or biokinetics.
Another feature we love about this clinic is that they offer a broad range of physio services including treating sports injuries, arthritis, spinal health, dry needling, TMJ, orthopaedic rehabilitation, and more.
Lastly, another one of Johannesburg Physio & Bio’s strongest assets is the superb patient care they deliver. Many of their previous patients commended the clinic’s staff for their excellent bedside manner.
Take note, though, that Johannesburg Physio & Bio is in demand and can get busy sometimes. As a result, the clinic’s representatives can be slow in responding to patients’ inquiries.

Pros
- Registered with the BHF
- Approved by Gauteng Department of Health
- Well-rounded medical institution with 28 years of experience
- Has 24-hour nursing care and emergency call-out
- Top-notch facilities
Cons
- Located outside the city
- Some reports on poor patient care
Lynnmed Clinic – Sub-Acute & Rehabilitation Hospital is another popular choice when it comes to physical therapy. They’re a subdivision of La Vie Care, a distinguished medical facility that specialises in frail care and rehabilitation.
One of this clinic’s advantages is its strong credibility and high standards. Lynnmed Clinic is a well-rounded medical institution with 28 years of experience.
We commend how they’re registered with the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa (BHF).
On top of that, their institution is also annually inspected and approved by the Gauteng Department of Health. It’s a big plus for us that the clinic’s facilities are well-maintained and their performance is monitored.
Quality and capability-wise, we like how Lynnmed Clinic is furnished with complete and high-quality equipment appropriate for physical therapy and rehabilitation treatments. Patients also appreciate how the tools used at the clinic are updated and durable.
Lynnmed Clinic offers specialised care, neurorehabilitation, orthopaedic rehabilitation, and recuperative and palliative care. Their facility has 21 beds and can accommodate six frail care patients.
Our favourite feature, though, is their 24-hour security, call-out, and nursing care. We love that they’re prompt to respond to patients in need.
However, we are disappointed to hear a few complaints about the quality of patient care the clinic delivers. Apparently, there are several cases where the patients are neglected by their carers, which we find appalling.

Pros
- Open to non-members of Virgin Active
- Treats a broad range of conditions
- Led by a distinguished physiotherapist
- Registered member of the HPCSA and the SASP
- Has friendly and highly-trained support staff
Cons
- No online appointment setting option
- Treatment sessions are by appointment only
Bansda Physiotherapy is an esteemed clinic based in Houghton Estate, Johannesburg. Although they are based within the premises of the Virgin Active, the clinic is open to non-members and the public, which we also appreciate.
Bansda Physiotherapy is led by Anisha Bansda, who, though young, is a distinguished physiotherapist.
She completed her training at Stellenbosch University and is currently specialising in sports injuries, orthopaedics, paediatrics, women’s health, and rehabilitation.
It’s a plus for us that the clinic is all-around and treats a broad range of conditions. On top of that, Bansda is a registered member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP).
Another thing previous patients commend is the clinic’s friendly and highly-trained support staff. They appreciate how Bansda Physiotherapy’s personnel are hands-on and knowledgeable.
Although the clinic is small, the space feels spacious and well-kept, which we commend. We also made sure that the equipment they use for physical therapy sessions is safe, updated, and high-quality.
Just a little heads up, though, that the clinic is strict about appointments. Unfortunately, walk-in patients are not accommodated and they don’t have an emergency wing.
In line with this, we found their booking process a little outdated as it’s not automated. Instead, patients need to either show up personally or call in to set an appointment.

Pros
- Treats a wide spectrum of conditions
- Led by a high-performing physiotherapist
- Certified in OMT
- Patient-centred approach
Cons
- Could be more responsive to inquiries
- Less established than other clinics
Brendan Shahim Physiotherapy is another physical therapy clinic in Joburg that’s rising in popularity. Although they’re a relatively new rehabilitation centre, they’re currently one of the highest-rated clinics in the area, which we find impressive.
It’s an outpatient physio practice located at The Ear Institute in Dunkeld run by Brendan Shahim, a young but high-performing physio expert.
Shahim completed his training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2013 and started to build his experience in both public and private health institutes. We’re also impressed to know that Shahim is certified in Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy (OMT).
Brendan Shahim Physiotherapy offers a wide spectrum of treatments for different conditions, such as sports injuries, orthopaedics, back and neck pain, pre- and post-rehabilitation and chest conditions.
One of the reasons why many of their previous patients preferred this clinic is their patient-centred approach. Shahim is known for being hands-on and passionate about patients’ cases, and we love that.
Another feature past patients love about Brendan Shahim Physiotherapy is its comfortable and welcoming rooms. The clinic is committed to maintaining its space and keeping up with the latest equipment, which is a big plus for us.
If there’s anything that needs improvement at Brendan Shahim Physiotherapy, it’s their customer service.
While their representatives are often complimented for their friendliness, there are minor grumbles about them being slow to respond to patients’ questions, which isn’t ideal.

Pros
- Convenient location
- Has two branches
- Has almost 20 years of experience
- Has highly-qualified physiotherapists
- Experienced in various treatment approaches
- Partnered with medical aids
Cons
- Appointments are shared with other patients
- Some complaints about poor patient handling
Greenside Physio is one of the first and most established health and wellness institutions that deal with physio and physical therapy. We selected them for their solid track record, having been in the business for almost 20 years now.
The clinic is quite popular for its convenient location in Greenside. Just recently, the business also expanded with another branch in Kyalami Estates, which is convenient for patients.
We also value how the clinic is partnered with multiple medical aids, especially considering how physical therapy can be costly.
One of the features we love about this clinic is they’re well-staffed with highly-qualified physiotherapists. All their physiotherapy experts are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), which we commend.
They’re also certified in several aspects of physiotherapy specialisations such as orthopaedic manipulative therapy (OMT), manual therapy, advanced dry needling, neuro-developmental therapy (NDT), Kinesio strapping, and more.
Greenside Physio’s therapists are highly-regarded by previous patients for their expertise and uniquely-designed treatment programmes. Their support staff are often complimented too, especially for their friendliness.
Nonetheless, we think it’s worth mentioning that there are a few grievances about the clinic’s reported poor patient handling. We’re told some patients experienced being neglected and that their pain persisted even after multiple sessions.
Lastly, there are also complaints from previous patients about how their appointments are shared with other patients to accommodate more, which is disappointing.
