The Best 24-Hour Restaurants in Johannesburg to Pig Out at Any Time of the Day

My buddies and I love eating out since these simple meals truly help us catch up with each other. However, with our busy schedules due to family and work demands, it can be tough scheduling an eat-out with these people I consider my close friends.

Fortunately, there are a number of restaurants and fast-food chains in Johannesburg that serve hot and delicious meals 24/7. We listed these eateries below so you know where to satisfy your late-night or early-morning cravings!

1. Andiccio24 Illovo

I’m a certified pizza lover, so when I found out about this 24-hour pizza joint, I had to check it out! Andiccio24 has a couple of branches across South Africa, but I decided to drop by their Illovo branch and right off the bat, the place gave off a casual vibe.

I ordered their Predator pizza, and it was everything an omnivore like me could ever ask for. It’s a large Margherita pizza with a cheesy crust topped with juicy beef strips and slightly sweet and salty spare ribs.

When I looked at what the other customers ordered, I saw them slurping on some mac and cheese. I looked at the menu and was surprised to find that it was vegan! I promised myself I’d try this vegan pasta dish on my next visit.

Pro Tip:Andiccio24 takes the health of its customers seriously. If you want to know more about the nutritional facts of their pizzas and ingredients, check out the nutritional tab of their website.

I had to do some overtime work last week, and I thought of just getting something to eat on the way home. That’s when I happened to drop by the Collective, an Indian-inspired restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Once I got there, I was so famished and ordered one of their signature dishes, the Peri Peri Chicken meal (ZAR 180). The chicken meat was succulent and had the right amount of spiciness that I really enjoyed.

For dessert, I ordered some Milo Cheesecake worth ZAR 95, and it tasted heavenly. It has a decadent cheesecake base infused with milo bits and some sweet and creamy Nutella swirls that gave this dessert varying chocolate-layered textures that I enjoyed.

Pro Tip:
You can also give gift cards to your loved ones and friends so they can try out the Collective (and other Hyatt restaurants). You can purchase a gift card priced from ZAR100 to 2,000 through their website.

My friends and I wanted to grab something to eat and drink one late Saturday evening, and since we were in the neighbourhood, we decided to check out Chambers on Fox. It’s a lifestyle restaurant-cum-bar with colourful and intricate interiors.

For our food, we ordered their pulled beef sliders, and it’s one of the best ones I’ve ever tried. The strips of beef were tender, moist, and perfectly salty and combined well with the melted cheese and fresh veggies.

We also downed a few drinks like Remy Martin and Hennessy to complete our boys’ night out without worrying about the restaurant closing for the night. 24 hours is the way to go for eating and drinking sessions like ours!

Pro Tip:
Check out their Facebook to learn more about their upcoming events and promos. They sometimes feature guest DJs who play musical genres (like dance hall and electronica) that you might be into.

4. FreshStop Oaklands

Address: Cnr 17th Avenue & 4th Street, 4th St, Oaklands

Website: https://freshstop.co.za/

Contact Number: +27114833233

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday, Open 24 hours

Cost: $$

At first, I thought that FreshStop Oaklands only provides gas station snacks like chips and jerky, but when I checked them out a month ago while I gassed up, I was proven dead wrong. While it’s not fine dining per se, the quality of food offered here is good!

I was also impressed by the variety of menu items on offer. I saw some classic burgers (they referred to these as pistons) and some fries (referred to as spark plugs). However, since I was in a bit of a hurry during my visit, I was only able to order a frankfurter roll.

At just ZAR75, the roll was filling enough for me thanks to the meaty and salty sausage stuffed inside the roll. To my surprise, it also had grilled onions and gherkins giving it a crunchy texture and savoury aroma that made my mouth water with each bite.

Pro Tip:
FreshStop also has other stores across South Africa (such as the one on Shepstone Road and Hammarsdale). You can check out these other store locations by visiting their website.

5. Mcdonald’s Parktown Drive Thru

Address: 26 Empire Road Cnr Hillside Road & Joubert Street Ext, Parktown

Website: http://www.mcdonalds.co.za/

Contact Number: +27114840058

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday, Open 24 hours

Cost: $

McDonald’s Parktown has always been a family favourite. I always liked ordering their Big Mac and chicken nuggets, as they’re not only delicious and flavourful but they are food items that are easy to grab and go. Plus they’re extremely cheap and open 24/7!

While our family liked the Big Mac and the chicken nuggets of McD’s, we opted for their limited edition menu items just to try something different. We tried their Grand Chicken Habanero, and we liked the tender and juicy chicken patty and spicy chilli sauce spread across the buns.

The kids, on the other hand, went for their standard Chicken McNuggets but paired it with a limited edition drink—Heavenly Caramel Chai Shake. The young ones said it had a weird but delicious taste thanks to its caramel and chai combo. At least they liked it!

Pro Tip:
You can also order online if you don’t have time to visit any of their branches. Just click on the Order Now tab on their website to choose your delivery partner.

6. Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Melville

Address: Cnr Streatley Ave &, University Rd, Auckland Park

Website: http://www.kfc.co.za/

Contact Number: +27150041205

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday, Open 24 hours

Cost: $

Is KFC still finger-licking good? Well, based on our recent family meal at one of their branches—the Melville branch—the food is the same quality we remember with its tender chicken meat and perfectly flavoured and herbed chicken skin.

I already knew how their chicken tasted, so I went for something new and ordered their hot and spicy Chachos (chicken nachos). I was surprised that the chicken strips tasted as flavourful and as tender as their original chicken.

Their cheese, mayo, and chilli toppings made all the difference! The kids had the regular fried chicken and (as expected) didn’t complain especially since they had it with a side of crispy golden French fries.

Pro Tip:
Check out KFC South Africa’s Instagram to learn more about their latest food offers. I saw a new product called Spicy Brekkie (pita wrap with spicy chicken and egg) that I plan on trying soon.

7. Grill to Go Goodwill

Address: 3 Hanover Street, Main Reef Rd, Cnr

Website: https://freshstop.co.za/grill-to-go/

Contact Number: +27110845650

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday, Open 24 hours

Cost: $

Grill To Go is a lesser-known fast food brand that you can order from any FreshStop branch. What’s special about their Goodwill site, though, is that you can order their quick, affordable, and delicious meals 24/7.

Their food items here are for takeaway, and we usually order their grilled burgers with a side of fries. We were feeling a bit adventurous a few months back, though, so we ordered their flame-grilled chicken and French fries.

My first bite of that chicken meat was truly something else. The meat was juicy and tender while the skin was perfectly char-grilled, giving it a smoky taste and aroma with a bit of a crunchy texture owing to the slightly burnt portions.

Pro Tip:
Download their Rewards App to get cashback every time you order from FreshStop.
