Feed Your Soul: 6 Best Churches in Johannesburg to Attend Service

Did you know that in 2022, statistics showed that 80% of South Africa’s population are Christians? No wonder there are so many beautiful churches in Johannesburg!

As a devoted Christian, visiting these churches has been spiritually fulfilling. Each church has unique architecture and history, making them cultural treasures as well as places of worship.

Exploring these sacred sites has deepened my appreciation for South African faith and religion. If you’re planning to visit Johannesburg’s best churches, this guide is your perfect companion.

  • Sundays – 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Regina Mundi is the largest church in South Africa, with seating for 2,000 and space for up to 5,000 standing. Built in 1961, it played a significant role in the anti-apartheid movement by providing sanctuary to activists and students targeted by the government in the 1970s and 1980s.

Today, it serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles that South Africans endured.

During my visit, I noticed that the church’s architecture still bore scars from those times. Bullet holes and broken windows from police raids remain, preserving its role as a site of resistance.

Attending a service at Regina Mundi was both spiritually and historically fulfilling. The atmosphere was lively, enhanced by the beautiful voices of the choir.

Since 1960, the Cathedral of Christ the King has been serving the local Christian community. As the main cathedral of the Archdiocese of Johannesburg, it represents unity and resilience, particularly during apartheid, when it helped bring together people despite their different backgrounds.

The cathedral’s architecture is a combination of modern design and traditional features like a bell tower, making it a well-known building in Johannesburg. Plus, its tall arched ceiling and large windows create a calm and peaceful feeling.

It’s a welcoming place and holds Sunday services for various nationalities, including those from Nigeria, Congo, and Malawi.

St. Mary’s Cathedral, located in Johannesburg’s Central Business District, is both a place of worship and an architectural gem. Officially called the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, this Anglican cathedral was completed in 1929 and is the oldest church in Johannesburg.

There are three main chapels in this cathedral: the Chapel of Saint John Chrysostom for prayer and reflection, the All Souls Chapel dedicated to fallen South Africans in World War I, and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit for meditation.

One special feature is a life-size wooden sculpture of Jesus on the cross. There are also stained glass windows showing stories from the Bible.

For me, going to a service at this cathedral was a wonderful experience because it truly reflects what Anglican tradition is all about. The beautiful architecture and lovely music made the place feel calm and peaceful.

The Revelation Church of God was established in 2009 by Prophet Samuel Radebe on the site of a former synagogue. While modern in design, the church has retained some of the synagogue’s original features, like the Star of David and menorah, blending elements of Jewish and Christian symbolism.

Inside, there are multiple screens, a helpful addition given the church’s capacity to serve 5,000 attendees.

The service combines African traditional beliefs with Christian worship, creating an immersive and spiritual atmosphere with lively music, singing, and messages focused on community and faith.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Church was established by Trappist monks in 1897 before being handed over to the Oblates and the Paulist Fathers. The Jesuits took over in 1973 and have continued to oversee the church, strengthening its ties to the surrounding community.

The church’s architecture blends classic design with simplicity. It features three vaulted bays representing the Holy Trinity, and its stained-glass windows depict key biblical scenes such as the Nativity, Crucifixion, and Ascension. Above the choir loft, a stunning rose window of Mary, Queen of the Angels, adds to the church’s beauty.

In terms of service, the Jesuits emphasize social justice through sermons that address contemporary issues while incorporating traditional liturgical practices. These messages are enhanced by the choir’s performance of both classic and modern hymns, making attending the service a deeply reflective experience.

Officially known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rosebank Catholic Church has welcomed people from all walks of life since 1936.

Founded by the Jesuits, the church combines traditional Catholic features, such as stained glass windows and a large central altar, with modern touches like comfortable seating, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

When I attended a service last Sunday, I felt welcomed by the diverse congregation with a warm, inviting environment. The service was a rich combination of traditional liturgy, modern hymns, and a powerful homily, leaving me with a deep sense of reflection and spiritual renewal.
