I’ve spent more than a few weekends uncovering the hidden gems this place has to offer, and I’m excited to share them with you.

When I decided to try tandem skydiving, I was a bit nervous but mostly excited. The team there made it easy because they were friendly and reassuring and walked me through everything step by step.
You get a bird’s-eye view of the landscape and the city, which is something you can’t quite appreciate from the ground. Plus, after your jump, you can chill out at their dropzone, grab a bite, and watch other skydivers land.
Pro Tips: Eat a regular meal to keep your energy up but avoid overeating to prevent nausea. Stay hydrated for alertness, and skip the alcohol to fully enjoy the experience. |

I’ve taken a few helicopter tours around Johannesburg, and I have to say, seeing the city from above is pretty incredible. From up in the air, the whole layout of the city becomes so clear.
During the flight, the pilot gives you a guided tour, pointing out key landmarks and sharing interesting tidbits about the city.
Pro Tips: Booking requires some planning, so make sure to give it at least four business days. And remember, the full payment is needed 48 hours in advance. |

The Toyota Stadium is a legendary spot in South Africa’s sports scene. I’ve been there cheering on the Cheetahs with fellow fans, and the energy is unreal when the game heats up.
The stadium’s training facilities are no joke either. I’ve had some tough workouts in their well-equipped gym too.
Pro Tips: Fuel up before the game with a hearty meal at Braza. Their grilled espetada (beef skewers) and generous portions are perfect for a satisfying pre-game boost. |

When I visited Modenso Park, I hopped on the miniature train ride, and it took me straight back to childhood. The ride runs on Sundays for just R5, and the kids with us absolutely loved it.
There’s a small shop where you can grab some pancakes or other treats. If you’re into history, the museum with its steam engines adds a nice touch.
Pro Tips: Bring a picnic lunch or birthday party snacks to enjoy at the park’s picnic tables and benches. Don’t miss the small shop for pancakes and sweets, and take a moment to explore the mini museum showcasing steam engines. |

I’ve spent a few weekends at Bloem Action Sports, and it’s a fantastic spot for gathering everyone for a game of action cricket, netball, or hockey. The courts are spacious and well-maintained, so you can focus on the game without any distractions.
The on-site coffee shop is great for grabbing a drink or snack between matches. Additionally, it’s a great spot if you’re hosting a corporate event or birthday party.
Pro Tips: The centre offers cosy braai facilities. Enjoy a personal touch to your sports day with a relaxing, self-catered picnic in a charming setting. |
Spot wildlife on Naval Hill

Naval Hill’s Franklin Game Reserve is a peaceful escape from the city. You can spot giraffes, buck, and ostriches up close, which is pretty amazing for photos, though it’s important to keep a respectful distance.
The reserve is safe for a jog or a walk, especially since there are no large predators around. I’d recommend visiting at sunrise for the best chance to see the wildlife in action and remember to take all your food and trash with you.
Pro Tips: Visit the Nelson Mandela statue at the reserve for a stunning city view from the largest bronze statue of the South African hero. The surrounding lookout point offers a perfect spot to appreciate Bloemfontein’s beauty. |
Visit the Boeremark Farmer’s Market on a Saturday

Every Saturday, I love heading to Boeremark Farmer’s Market, where the place comes alive with local activity. I always enjoy browsing through the fresh produce, homemade treats, and the tempting aroma of sizzling braais.
One of my favourite parts is sampling the local delicacies, like artisanal bread and pastries made from local ingredients. I often find myself chatting with friendly farmers and vendors, discovering more about their products and the community.
Pro Tips: Make a detailed checklist before you visit the farmers market to avoid missing essentials like change, bags, and marketing materials. |

The Free State National Botanical Garden has a peaceful atmosphere with plenty of indigenous plants and paths that wind through wild olive and karee trees. It’s a great spot to visit if you enjoy nature and a quiet setting for a picnic.
I usually find a shady spot under one of the trees and relax with a few snacks. Afterwards, I like to wander along the paths or explore the koppies before calling it a day.

The Odeion School of Music is known for hosting classical music performances, including opera, chamber music, and orchestral concerts. The students often perform alongside professional musicians, offering a unique experience for visitors.
When I attended a recital there, Danilo Mascetti performed variations on a waltz by Diabelli, building up to Beethoven’s 33 Variations. The way he brought each composer’s style to life made the whole evening feel like a journey through music history.
Pro Tips: To fully enjoy a classical music performance, let yourself focus on the emotions and stories the music conveys without worrying about understanding every technical detail. |
Enjoy a day of angling at Soetdoring Nature Reserve

If you’re into fishing, you’ll want to check out Soetdoring Nature Reserve. I’ve spent a few afternoons here myself, casting off by the Modder River.
The river offers a nice mix of fish, and it’s always a good idea to bring some snacks for a picnic right by the water. The braai facilities are handy too if you want to grill up your catch.
Pro Tips: When fishing, use a combination of live bait and artificial lures to increase your chances of catching quality fish. Live bait attracts fish with its natural movement, while lures can mimic the appearance of prey. |

The Naval Hill Planetarium is the first digital planetarium in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Its modern domed theatre impressed me with its stunning, realistic space visuals during the show.
The 60-minute presentation was both beautiful and educational. It provided clear insights into stars, planets, and galaxies, making it an engaging experience to explore these cosmic wonders.
