Tuscani Salon, established in 1999, is one of the oldest hair salons in Johannesburg that’s still in operation today. 

Here, you’ll be treated to a vast range of offerings that include various hair treatments and styling services. They carry out these services using high-quality brands like Schwarzkopf, Olaplex, and Joico.

I had a blast during my visit here, as the staff immediately entertained me and even handed me a complimentary cappuccino to enjoy while I was getting my hair done.

However, if there’s one thing I dislike about the salon, it’s that it tends to get filled quickly during peak hours. My hair stylist had to rush my treatment a bit because some of the waiting customers were already getting impatient.

It’s also unfortunate to find out that some of their services, like their men’s hair grooming services, are only available at their other branch in Linksfield.

Carlton Hair was founded in 1968 and currently operates six branches across Johannesburg.

It’s awesome to see that their hair stylists clearly know what they’re doing, and they’re not afraid to give personalised advice to those who are looking for new styles.

However, what I really find to be so great about Carlton Hair is their mobile app, which lets me book my appointments in advance and earn points that I can use to gain exclusive discounts. It’s available on both the Play Store and the App Store. 

And if you’re a student, you’re also entitled to a 20% discount on all their services, no questions asked!

If there’s one thing I dislike about this salon, though, it’s that some of the staff acted a bit rudely towards me during my visit. 

I also heard from some people that their appointments were double-booked with someone else. 

Milani Hair Studio, a vibrant and trendsetting hair salon located in Parkhurst, was founded by Mbalenhle Ntuli to provide ethnic hairstyles in Johannesburg.

Here, you’ll be able to try out hairstyles like box braids, cornrows, and faux locs. 

When I checked the place, I was dazzled by the amenities offered here. Each styling station has a smart television that lets you watch cable or Netflix while getting your hair done.

The salon even has access to high-speed Wi-Fi, so you can freely browse the Internet or do remote work here during your appointment.

However, I find it a bit disappointing that the studio charges a fee to undo a hairstyle, even if it was done by one of their hair stylists. Some customers I talked to also encountered some issues with their hair, like braids unravelling too fast.

It was founded by Faith Mensah, a hairdresser with over 16 years of experience in the industry. 

As someone who tends to get too busy to go to a salon from time to time, I find their mobile hair salon services to be a godsend, as they are available any day of the week. 

Furthermore, I’m also amazed by their use of organic hair care products that are formulated by Faith herself.

If there are some things I dislike about them, it’s their insistence on charging a 50% deposit fee on all their services and the pricey call-out fees they demand if your address is a bit far from Sandton. 

PHD Hairdressing is a salon in Greenside that has over 24 years of experience in the industry. 

One of my favourite things about this hair salon is its impressive facilities, which include separate rooms with lie-down beds to ensure customers stay relaxed throughout treatments.

I also find it impressive that they use hair products that are made by companies like Redken, Schwarzkopf, and Beaute Pacifique.

Moreover, they regularly offer special discounts and deals on all their services. For first-time customers, they offer a 20% discount on all their services.

Furthermore, their skilled hair stylists offer free hair consultations if you’re still not sure which hairstyle to go with.

The only real issue I have with this hair salon is their unavailability on Sundays and Mondays. It’s also a bit annoying that their special deals are applicable only on certain days of the week, which might confuse new customers.
