If you’re into bird-watching, check out the Blue Crane Restaurant and Bar right next to the Austin Roberts Sanctuary.

I gave their venison burger a go, and it didn’t disappoint. The patty was tender and juicy, paired perfectly with caramelized onion and tangy feta cheese. At R130, it felt like a solid deal—especially with that view to top it off.

Pro Tip: Ask to dine on one of their private balconies. It’s a great way to enjoy some quiet time while bird-watching.

You’ve got to check out Forti Grill and Bar; it’s worth every cent! Their rooftop terrace offers a fine dining experience under the stars with a stunning view of Eastern Pretoria.

The menu is all about Italian cuisine, crafted by celebrity chef Fortunato Mazzone. They even have a pasta kitchen, where traditional Italian flavors get a unique twist!

I went there with a date and tried the Fillet Ritrovo for Two, priced at R800. The steak was tender and juicy, paired with béarnaise and red wine sauces, plus three sides.

Pro Tip: If you’re into cigars, don’t miss their fully stocked humidor. It’s packed with options from some of the best brands around the world like Cuban Cohiba, Habanos, Davidoff, and Montecristo.

Milkplum Café is a hidden gem inside the Pretoria National Botanical Garden. You’ll dine under shady trees, perfect for escaping the heat, with a nearby waterfall adding to the relaxing vibe. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy good food surrounded by nature.

The cafe is also a great spot for hosting birthday parties, baby showers, weddings, picnics, or simply relaxing with a coffee and brunch.

The view gets even better when you try their halloumi burger. I had it during my visit, and the cheese was perfectly grilled—crispy on the outside with a soft, salty center—paired with fresh veggies and a soft bun.

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars! While dining, you can spot a variety of bird species like helmeted guineafowl, ring-necked dove, laughing dove, and crowned lapwing.

I tried their signature bobotie, and it didn’t disappoint. It was packed with rich, savory flavors, tender minced meat, and a nice sweetness from the raisins. The creamy custard topping added a smooth finish—a proper treat while enjoying the outdoors.

Pro Tip: Afro-boer is pet-friendly! Bring your pets along, but make sure they stay on a leash. The paved seating area is perfect for both of you.

As for food, I’m a fan of chicken, so I eagerly tried their rose-infused version. It had a delicate, aromatic flavor, with the subtle sweetness of rose petals blending perfectly with the savory, tender chicken.

Pro Tip: Consider visiting on a weekend to experience their tractor train ride that will take you through the rose fields.

It’s also a nice choice for family outings with its warm and inviting setting. Also, there’s a fireplace where you can relax and savor delicious food.

I visited last weekend and had the chicken schnitzel. The crust was crunchy and golden, and the chicken inside was succulent and tender. It was seasoned just right and went really well with their fries.

Pro Tip: You’ve got to try their white chocolate and pineapple milkshake! It’s rich and creamy and blends the sweetness of white chocolate with the fresh tang of pineapple.

I stumbled upon it by chance after church and was blown away by their oxtail stew. It was slow-cooked in a rich onion and curry-infused broth and served with creamy polenta. The dish was hearty, flavorful, and full of fresh, local ingredients.

Pro Tip: Visit the restaurant on a Friday or Saturday night to enjoy live music while having a meal. They play Afro-house, hip-hop, R&B, and more!
