The Whale Trail is a five-day, 56-kilometre hike through the De Hoop Nature Reserve, one of South Africa’s most beautiful and biodiverse areas. It starts and ends at Potberg, which is located approximately 250 km east of Cape Town.

This is one of the most popular hiking trails in South Africa, with more than 1,200 people hiking the trail each year.

The walk provides breathtaking views of the coastline as well as opportunities to watch whales, dolphins, seals, and other animals. 

Despite having moderate difficulty, don’t worry because the track is well-kept, and there are numerous overnight lodges along the way, making it an excellent choice for hikers of all abilities.

The trail also passes through several camps, each of which has basic facilities such as running water, flush toilets, and braai areas.

Some reminders for you:

  • Don’t forget to book your hiking permits in advance as only 12 hikers are allowed on the trail at any one time.
  • The trail is closed during the southern right whale calving season, which runs from July to November.

The 35-kilometre Klipspringer track, which passes through some of the Cederberg’s most breathtaking landscape, is the most well-known track. It’s a moderate to challenging track so make sure you’re well-conditioned.

And, fun fact! The trail is named after the klipspringer, a small antelope that’s known for its ability to climb steep cliffs.
