The Best Things to Do in Durban, Tried and Recommended by Locals

Here’s a fun fact: Durban is known for having the highest average annual sunshine hours of any major city in South Africa. It’s no wonder the city is a sun-soaked paradise!

Here, I’ve had my share of beachside mishaps like slipping on a wave. It’s all part of the fun!

There’s more to this city than its sunny beaches though. If you’re eager to explore, here are the best things to do in town!

Stroll along the Golden Mile

Google Maps

With a lively mix of activities all along its stretch, the Golden Mile is a go-to spot for a walk by the sea. The beach is always busy with locals and tourists, whether they’re soaking up the sun, taking a dip in the ocean, or just enjoying the view.

I’ve spent many afternoons strolling here, watching surfers take on the waves. If you’re feeling brave, you can try it too, though it’s tougher than it looks!

The promenade is lined with spots to grab a bite or just sit back and watch the world go by.

Pro Tip:
The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons, from April to May or September to November. The weather is warm but not too humid, and the crowds are thinner compared to the busy holiday months.

Operating Hours:

  • Open Daily – 9 AM to 5 PM

If you want to get close to sea creatures, uShaka Marine World offers snorkelling, shark diving, a relaxed aquarium visit, and more. Whether you’re in the water or staying dry, there’s something exciting to explore.

When I went, I tried the interactive dolphin experience and stood in the water as these graceful creatures swam around me. I also enjoyed the touch pools where I could feel the starfish and other sea creatures.

Pro Tip:
For a thrill, try ziplining over Rocky Reef at Chimp & Zee at the park, then treat yourself to some great food and unique finds at uShaka Village Walk.

Operating Hours:

  • Open daily – 9 AM to 4 PM

The Moses Mabhida Stadium Swing is the tallest stadium swing in the world. What makes it special is the rush you feel as you’re flying through a massive 220-metre arc inside the stadium.

The 352 steps to the top had my adrenaline pumping before the jump even started. After getting harnessed in, the leap was intense but safe, and I got some great free pictures and a video to relive the moment.

Pro Tip:
Make sure to check out the other attractions at the stadium, like the segway gliding tours and the adventure walk. You can also join a stadium tour or relax at the People’s Park & Cafe.

Dive with sharks at Aliwal Shoal

Address: No 1 Old Main Road, Rocky Bay Park Rynie

Phone: +27 82 670 6950

Operating Hours:

  • Open daily – 6 AM to 8 PM

Shark cage diving offers a unique way to get up close with various shark species in the warm waters of Aliwal Shoal. Unlike the colder Cape Town dives targeting great white sharks, here you get to see blacktip, dusky, spinner, tiger, and zambezi sharks.

I felt completely safe in the 4-man stainless steel cages, which are designed by an engineer and fully SAMSA approved. The cages are securely attached to the boat, allowing you to focus on the incredible sights.

Pro Tip:
For the best shark cage diving experience, plan your dive between April and September. During these months, the water visibility is typically clearer, and you’ll have a higher chance of spotting a variety of shark species.

Surf or relax at Ansteys Beach

Address: Foreshore Dr, Ocean View, Bluff

Ansteys Beach is a great spot known for its relaxed atmosphere and clean sand. It’s a go-to for both surfers and those just looking to unwind by the Indian Ocean.

The surf at Ansteys caters to all levels, so it’s ideal for me when I want to catch some waves without the chaos of the busier Durban beaches. I always feel comfortable knowing there are lifeguards around.

Pro Tip:
For a change from Ansteys, check out Cave Rock if you’re up for a challenge. If you’re looking for a quieter spot, Brighton Beach offers less crowded waves and a relaxed atmosphere.

One of my favourites is the Orchid House, where you can see a variety of orchids. The Sensory Garden is also enjoyable, offering different textures and scents, and you’ll often spot butterflies and birds throughout the gardens.

Don’t miss the annual Indigenous Plant Fair every September, where you can find special plants, enjoy talks, and explore environmental displays.

A catamaran sunset cruise is a relaxing way to experience Durban’s beautiful skyline and the changing colours of the sky over the Indian Ocean. The 55 ft luxury catamaran features comfortable seating, a spacious sundeck, and a shaded area for a laid-back experience.

During our trip, we enjoyed the sushi and crisp white wine from the full cash bar on board. The crew was attentive, and the setting made for a pleasant evening on the water.

Pro Tip:
Bring a light jacket or sweater for the evening, as it can get chilly on the water, especially after sunset. It’s also a good idea to arrive a bit early to secure a prime spot on the sundeck for the best view of the sunset.

Pro Tip:
For the ultimate tropical paradise experience, visit the park during daylight hours.

Experience the vibrant nightlife at Florida Road

Florida Road buzzes with life from morning until night, offering a mix of sidewalk cafes, bars, and clubs. The street’s energy is contagious, making it a top spot for shopping, dining, and enjoying Durban’s vibrant atmosphere.

I love grabbing a coffee at a local café to kick off my day on this street. Later, it’s great to swing by one of the many restaurants and bars to soak up the lively nightlife and explore the eclectic mix of shops and galleries.

Pro Tip:
Make sure to check out Falafel Fundi. Order a platter to sample a bit of everything which is great for sharing and gives you a taste of the whole menu.

Wilson’s Wharf is one of my go-to spots for fresh seafood and stunning views of Durban Harbour. The atmosphere is relaxed, with outdoor pubs where you can enjoy your meal while watching the yachts and working slipways.

For the best seafood platter, I always head to the Oyster Bar. It’s loaded with juicy prawns and tender calamari grilled to perfection. If I’m in a hurry, their quick meals are a convenient option, letting me soak in the lively waterfront atmosphere as I explore.

Pro Tip:
Spend your Saturday afternoon soaking in live jazz at Zack’s on the Wharf, and then enjoy a relaxed Sunday brunch accompanied by classical music.

During my visit to the Durban Natural Science Museum, I was fascinated by Earth’s history, especially when standing beside the life-sized T-Rex. The dioramas and screens did a great job of showing key moments in Earth’s past, and it felt like stepping back in time.

One of my favourite parts was exploring the Museum Research Centre, where I got a close-up view of Africa’s third-largest bird collection. The Hall of Earth Sciences Gallery also stood out, offering a fascinating glimpse into different eras.

Pro Tip:
After exploring the museum, take a short walk to the Old Durban Station Platform Roof and Durban Central Post Office. These spots are perfect for history lovers, offering even more insight into Durban’s fascinating past.

Take a traditional rickshaw ride along the beachfront

Media from thompsonsholidays

Address: Marine Parade, North Beach

I hopped on a rickshaw once, a laid-back ride that Indian immigrants brought to Durban. We cruised along the beachfront, and I got to soak in the ocean views and the city skyline.

The rickshaw puller was dressed in vibrant, beaded attire with an impressive horned headgear. He told me about his daily grind, rising at 5 AM every day to pull his decorated carriage until 5 PM.

Pro Tip:
For a quieter ride, try heading out early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You’ll also catch a beautiful sunrise or sunset over the ocean if you time it right.

Visit the colourful Indian Quarter

Media from buddy_govender

Address: Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street

The Indian Quarter, or Grey Street as we locals know it, is full of character and history. I love wandering through the narrow lanes like Madressa and Ajmeri arcades, where the old buildings feel like they’re telling stories of Durban’s past.

The real highlight for me is always grabbing a bunny chow. It’s filling, and the balance of curry and soft bread makes it my go-to pick every time.

Pro Tip:
For the best bunny chow experience, ask for extra gravy to soak into the bread. It enhances the flavours even more.

Ride the Umgeni Steam Train through the Valley of 1000 Hills

Media from umgenisteamrailway

Website: https://umgenisteamrailway.com/

Address: Train Station, 2 Station Rd, Inchanga West, Inchanga

Phone: +27 82 353 6003

I took a trip on the Umgeni Steam Train, and it was a fantastic throwback to South Africa’s railway past. The train, with its classic 3 ft 6 in gauge, runs from Kloof to Inchanga, offering breathtaking views of the Valley of 1000 Hills along the way.

The old main line from Durban to Pietermaritzburg is as scenic as it gets, and the journey itself is quite relaxing. When you reach Inchanga, the Inchanga Railway Museum is right there if you’re curious about locomotive history.

Pro Tip:
While you’re in the Valley of 1000 Hills, don’t just ride the steam train. Explore Zulu culture at Phezulu Safari Park, taste local treats at Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market, and seek adventure at Cotswold Downs Estate.
