Everything You Need to Know about Gandhi Square in Johannesburg
Gandhi Square, formerly known as Government Square and later Van der Bijl Square, has been a significant landmark in Johannesburg since 1900.
Renamed in tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in 1999, the square stands as a testament to his formative years as a lawyer and his influential journey. The 2.5-meter tall statue of Gandhi, depicted in his legal attire, is a striking symbol of his legacy.
In the 2000s, the square was revived, and surrounding buildings were renovated to host popular franchises. Today, Gandhi Square is a bustling bus terminus and a symbol of racial harmony, reflecting the visions of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
