According to 2022 reports, Hatfield has seen a decrease in crime over the past year, with a reported 6.3% reduction in the number of reported crimes from 2021. 

However, theft and assault remain a concern and account for the majority of reported crimes in the area. 

Recent news reports highlight an increase in smash-and-grab incidents targeting parked cars, prompting increased police patrols and urging residents and visitors to take necessary precautions. 

Despite the overall decrease in crime, safety remains a top concern for those in Hatfield. 

Local authorities are working to implement measures to increase police visibility and enhance security in public areas to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

Local authorities as well as other organisations in Hatfield, Pretoria, have several ongoing projects aimed at improving safety and reducing crime in the area. 

These include increased police surveillance, enhanced private security, and furthering crime prevention education.

1. Increased police surveillance 

The local police department has increased patrols in Hatfield, focusing on high-crime areas. To improve surveillance, the department is also utilising technology such as CCTV cameras.

They’re also collaborating with members of the community to form neighbourhood watch groups and encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity.

2. Strengthening private security

There are also organisations that are formed to strengthen security in Hatfield. One of the biggest and most prominent ones is the Hatfield City Improvement District (CID).

They’re a non-profit organisation that is funded by 26 property owners within the suburb. Their primary goal is to ensure the safety of all residents in Hatfield, which they achieve through outsourcing to private security companies such as G4S and JC Security. 

Security officers are deployed 24/7 within the Hatfield CID area, and there is a security contact point available at the corners of Hilda and Burnett streets in Hatfield. 

To monitor the streets of Hatfield, the Hatfield CID has installed CCTV cameras on an ongoing basis. Additionally, the Hatfield CID has partnered with the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) to ensure the presence of a Bicycle Unit in the area. 

Furthermore, the student community now has access to a 24-hour TMPD satellite police station.

3. Encouraging crime prevention education
