I’d like to think of myself as a practical homeowner. My house isn’t posh by any stretch, but it’s organised and sleek, especially if we’re talking about my shelving system.
Turns out, getting yours from a quality company does the trick. Their products don’t falter after a year, and you get to enjoy perks such as installation services and free consultations.
Now, you might be thinking, ‘I can save money by doing it myself, no?’ I used to as well. Crooked boards and loose wall anchors taught me otherwise.
That’s why if I were you, I’d give the names below a try first. We thoroughly reviewed their highlights and snags so you can skip the trial and error.

It’s Storequip’s experience that won most of our interviewees over. This shelving company has been doing it since 1965, you know.
I’d also consider them a one-stop shop, which ticks the convenience criterion. For starters, they provide clients with factory-qualified installers and consultants who generally adhere to safety standards.
Clients don’t have to jump stores either. Storequip’s product range includes essentials, primarily accessories (e.g. hooks and display fixtures) and light-/heavy-duty racking options.
The one wobble is that they mainly cater to commercial and industrial customers; think Shoprite, Krispy Kreme, Liquor City, Checkers, and Builders. That’s a good sign for entrepreneurs, but not so much for homeowners.
You also need to request the products’ rates first, as the prices aren’t posted online. Not everyone has the patience for that.

I went with Shelving Galore myself. Having opened in 2005 and offering more budget-friendly rates, including secondhand options, they’re a reliable choice.
Most importantly, homeowners are part of their clientele. I paid for their bolt-on shelving system, and the entire setup remains sturdy and space-efficient, with flexible depth and height configurations.
I also appreciate the versatility in terms of finishes. I chose the galvanised option since I live in a rust-prone environment, though opting for powder coating isn’t a shabby move, especially if you have the budget.
Big operations can find what they need here, too. Gondola shelving and pallet racking are in the books, and you can customise each by also scoring wall bands, pegboards, counters, and more accessories.
Email response times could be quicker, though. They also don’t have the biggest clients around, which may be a red flag for business owners.

When we chatted with a couple of Astro Shelving clients, two specific things were brought up by most: the company’s fair pricing and solid customer service.
Typically, the rates are what you’d expect in Johannesburg. Considering their use of A-grade steel and powder coating, that’s a positive.
Free, in-person consultations are also done on the site of your operations or residence. That means the layout and recommendations are tailored only for your needs, and you even get complimentary advice post-installation or sale.
If anything is missing, it’s secondhand stock. As a bargain hunter myself, I wouldn’t mind shopping for cheaper, pre-owned shelving systems.
They’d also be better off handling returns over the phone. The email route can drag things out, which is a shame since they generally pick up the phone fast.
That said, I gave them extra marks for range. Astro Shelving covers both homes and businesses.

KK Shelving was founded in 1964. That makes them the longest-running name here and a safe bet for those who value experience over everything.
Can’t knock on their service either. For instance, their supervisor-led, free consultations earned positive feedback from clients.
Oh, and by ‘clients,’ we mean household names like Dischem and President Hyper.
Moreover, KK Shelving’s installation services are also carried out by factory-qualified professionals, just like those of their sister company, Storequip.
Both their products and solutions lean toward industrial use as well, so the positives and drawbacks (not targeted at homeowners) are identical.
One crucial difference, though, is KK’s Smart Shelving option. Personally, I’d say it’s more visually appealing than gondolas or wire shelves, plus the adjustable slotted frames add extra versatility.

The 1991-founded Universal Storage Systems (USS) is among this list’s top contenders when it comes to versatility. You see, their products and services are generally suitable for offices, warehouses, and homes.
No other choice on this list also features ReadyRack, a system that comes with sprinklers. It’s even ‘plug-and-play,’ so you don’t have to hire a specialist to do stuff like welding and drilling.
As for shelving options, the majority of what they provide are adjustable and easy to assemble, particularly the bolt-less and long-span shelves.
Now, we’re not saying the bolted steel options are shabby picks, though. They’re the ones to go with if you’re after custom shelving.
Credential-wise, USS is ISO 9001-certified, an indicator that they have a structured approach for maintaining quality standards.
However, it’s kind of a buzzkill that you need to ring them up for the pricing details. There are no secondhand goods here either.
