Coverage – The coverage of each policy is different depending on what insurance plan you purchase. We made sure to include companies that offer a variety of options.

Requirements for eligibility – We considered how stringent or accommodating insurance companies' requirements are in acquiring clients, as some have unique conditions that determine whether you’re eligible for a policy.

Client Service – The quality of an insurance company’s service is largely determined by its timely and appropriate response to clients’ urgent needs. We looked into how they treat their customers, from contract signing to processing claims.

Pros

  • Helpful and patient brokers
  • Prompt and responsive
  • Offers affordable plans

Cons

  • Claim processing might take a while

Discovery Insure is one of the highest- and most-rated insurance companies in South Africa. Its mission is to reward individuals for making “healthy living choices”.

Despite their great tagline, they don’t disclose their definite insurable age range and coverage limits on their website, which is disappointing. To find out, you’ll probably need to ask for a quote which they claim you’ll receive in 60 seconds.

Discovery Insure offers life insurance that secures the policyholder and their beneficiaries from death, disability from accidents, severe illness or loss of income. We like that they offer several options under the life insurance programme that are tailored based on your life stage.

In the untoward event that the policyholder gets into an accident, Discovery Insure provides disability cover. Additionally, in any case where the policyholder loses their job due to injury or illness, they also offer an income protection plan, which we think is great.

However, we would’ve preferred it if they put up a sample pricing breakdown for a life and accident insurance plan. It would help those interested discover if they are also a fit for them budget-wise.

But worry not, we found that Discovery Insure has overwhelmingly positive reviews regarding their service and the quality of their insurance plans.

But here’s the challenge almost every life insurance owner faces: claiming the insurance money. Apparently, some disgruntled policyholders are disappointed by how long the disbursement process actually takes.

Nonetheless, we think Discovery Insure provides the most reliable response to clients’ concerns, and is a good choice for flexible and affordable plans.

Pros

  • Offers short-term policies and investment options
  • No medical assessments needed for full accidental death coverage

Cons

  • Some reports on needing to improve customer service
  • Insurable age range and coverage limits are not indicated on their website

PPS for Professionals is another established mutual financial service provider in Johannesburg. They were founded in 1941 and have been providing insurance, investment, and healthcare solutions since then.

What sets PPS for Professionals apart from other insurance companies is they offer their services exclusively to graduate professionals, which we think is unique and noteworthy. They offer assistance from graduation until retirement.

Although they do offer interesting life and accident plans, having a degree and being a professional is actually one of their requirements for eligibility. If one doesn’t fit in that category, then they would simply need to avail of their insurance policies elsewhere.

PPS for Professionals offers several life solutions, but there are two that particularly cover accidents: the Disability Cover, and the PPS Accidental Death.

We particularly find PPS Accidental Death reassuring, as PPS for Professionals claims that they won’t require medical assessments to process the claim. Moreover, they implement the accidental death cover while the papers are still being processed.

In this way, they succeed in making policy claiming process easier, which is always a strong selling point in this industry.

Just a word of warning: apparently, their customer service could do with some improvements. But don’t worry, it’s not like your concerns won’t be attended to – it might just take a while to hear back from them.

Pros

  • Inclusive coverage
  • Double coverage for accidental deaths
  • No medical tests required

Cons

  • Cancelled policies take a while to be processed
  • Some reports of needing to improve customer service

AllLife is an insurance company that aims to provide affordable life insurance, particularly to individuals living with HIV and Diabetes.

We think this is a wonderful focus, as individuals with chronic illnesses such as HIV and Diabetes are almost always rejected for life insurance applications given their pre-existing conditions.

They also claim to provide the cheapest and most affordable life covers there are in Johannesburg. This is also a plus for us, for obvious reasons.

Based on their website, AllLife offers two types of insurance: Chronic life cover (up to R 1M) for individuals with a chronic illness and Funeral cover (R 70,000).

What we found interesting in their products, specifically in the Funeral cover, is that they offer twice the cover amount if the policyholder dies from an accident.  Among the companies on this list, AllLife is the only insurance company that offers this condition.

We think this feature makes AllLife a great choice, especially for those who live high-risk lifestyles or work in high-risk environments.

While we love their mission, we’ve heard several reports from clients regarding the delayed processing of cancelled policies and neglect from customer service representatives and brokers.

We hope that management can consider retraining or upskilling their agents and brokers in light of these incidents.

Pros

  • Offers affordable policies
  • Provides a sample pricing breakdown

Cons

  • Some reports of delayed responses to clients

Bryte Life is a relatively newer player in the insurance field, only founded last 2019 as a part of Bryte Africa Group’s expansion.

We say “relatively new” because, before its launch, Bryte Insurance and Bryte Risk Services Botswana have been providing short-term insurance since 1936 and 1976 respectively.

What we like about Bryte Life is that you can access a sample of product information policies & pricing on Family, Extended Family, Group, and Extension Funeral Plans. This way, potential customers can look into the insurance plans they offer and gauge affordability and fit.

Generally, a waiting period of 6 months applies to all life covers. But for the accidental death of the insured individual, this does not apply, which is a relief. We’re happy to share that for accidental death, claims will be processed immediately.

Another thing we found notable about Bryte Life’s products is that their policies can cover several people at once. For example, for the Group Funeral Plan, the policy can cover up to 12 people with a total combined value of R 130,000.

That means, in the event that the policyholder, their spouse, or one member of the registered group dies, a certain amount of money will be released within 24 hours of document processing.

Depending on the relationship with the deceased, group members receive a specific payout. Of course, we wouldn’t wish such unfortunate circumstances on anyone, but we think this arrangement is an interesting way to get insured.

Moreover, we found Bryte Life’s monthly rates for their life and funeral plans more affordable than most. For example, the Group policy costs just R 415 per month.

Another thing we would suggest Bryte Life improves on, just like any other insurance company, is their client servicing. We caught wind of some concerning feedback about their customer service agents being difficult to reach when it comes to processing claims.

Pros

  • Established insurance provider
  • Provides options for Life Insurance coverage

Cons

  • Would need to make a direct request for specific information on insurable age range and coverage limits

Garrun Group is one of the well-known and biggest independent insurance brokerage groups in South Africa. Having been around for 60 years, we believe they’ve long proven their competence in the industry – imagine all the wisdom they’ve amassed since they were founded.

First off, we find it noteworthy that Garrun Group is commended by their clients for their reasonable pricing and flexible packages that are designed to fit different needs.

Garrun Group offers several personal insurance options, but the ones that cover several types of accidents would be Homeowners’ Insurance, Household Contents, Personal All Risks Insurance, Personal Liability Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance, and Sasria Insurance.

We like that Garrun Group doesn’t only insure individuals from unforeseen events, but also the things they value such as their home, household contents, and prized possessions.

One unique personal cover Garrun Group that we find noteworthy is the Personal Liability Insurance. Insurance companies usually offer coverage for the policyholder if they ever get into an accident, or worse, die from the event.

But the Personal Liability Insurance is designed to protect the policyholder in the case they’re on the other side of the rope and held responsible for accidental loss or damage of property, accidental injury or death of another person.

Another thing we like about Garrun Group is their great customer service. Their policyholders commend them for their quick responses to concerns and for having friendly and helpful brokers.

What we noticed Garrun Group lacks, however, is information on insurable age ranges and other coverage limitations. This is something we consider one of the top things to take into account before committing to an insurance policy, so make sure you enquire about this.

Like all other insurance companies, their pricing differs per policy. We would suggest that you enquire about the rates of your policies of interest before taking other options off your list.
