Pros
- Led by a distinguished surgeon
- Commended for superb pre- and post-surgery care
- Noteworthy bedside manner
- Reasonable pricing
Cons
- Customer service can be improved
- Complaints about having unhelpful and snobbish personnel
The iSurgeon eye clinic is run by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Sachin Bawa. About ten years ago, Dr. Bawa finished his medical education, and he is currently registered with The College of Medicine, South Africa.
Despite being one of the younger eye specialists in the area, he is highly renowned for his professional expertise and effective eye surgeries.
We also appreciate that iSurgeon keeps up with contemporary medical technology and procedures.
From the initial consultation through postoperative care, iSurgeon’s patients adore how they are treated. Patients praise Dr. Bawa for being accommodating, enthusiastic, and outstanding at what they do.
Patients are pleased with the calibre of the clinic’s services and impressed by the success of their surgeries. Additionally, patients appreciate how treatments, including retinal detachment surgery, are reasonably priced.
Nonetheless, there are a handful of complaints about the attitudes of some of the clinic’s support staff. Some of iSurgeon’s patients apparently had unpleasant interactions with unfriendly staff members and nurses, which is disheartening.
Additionally, there are complaints from individuals who claim that their issues and inquiries went unanswered. We hope that iSurgeon can resolve this so that they may take on more patients and preserve their positive clinic reputation.

Pros
- Specialises in vitreoretinal surgery
- Led by two brilliant ophthalmologists
- Also deals with other retinal conditions
- Commendable post-operation treatment
Cons
- Delayed release of diagnostic results
- Can be difficult to reach
Retina Surgery Centre is also one of the most recommended clinics for retinal detachment surgery as they’re a specialised ophthalmology clinic, particularly in vitreoretinal surgery.
The centre is led by two brilliant and experienced ophthalmologists, Dr. Bernard Wolff and Dr. Rian Viljoen. Both doctors finished their medical training at distinguished schools, and both are part of a wide network of eye specialists.
One thing we love about the Retina Surgery Centre is its dedication to keeping up with the latest treatments, as well as modern medical equipment. The doctors at the centre are all very active in the academe too, which we think is a great asset.
The Retina Surgery Centre focuses on treating and managing retinal conditions and is capable of conducting a long list of retinal operations, especially retinal detachment, which is one of the more common conditions.
Another feature previous patients appreciate is the clinic’s hands on and personalised post-operation treatment.
We’re told that the nurses regularly check in on the patients after the operation and they’re very approachable for any questions too, which we commend.
Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about Retina Surgery Centre’s customer service representatives. There are a handful of grumbles from potential patients about how the clinic’s receptionists are difficult to contact.
On top of that, we’re worried after hearing that there are also a few complaints about the delayed release of diagnostic results.
Urgency can be vital in some cases, especially for retinal detachment conditions, so we hope the clinic can improve on this and relay information in a timely manner.

Pros
- Has a structured post-surgery rehabilitation programme
- Accredited by and partnered with OSSA, OMG, and the National Hospital Network
Cons
- Some complaints of overcharging
- A few issues with unprofessional staff
One of the top eye hospitals in and around Johannesburg is JHB Eye Hospital. They have been in the industry for more than 20 years and today employ 75 eye specialists, which we find impressive.
We think it really boosts the clinic’s credibility that they are affiliated with and accredited by organisations like the National Hospital Network, Ophthalmology Management Group Ltd., and the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA).
Surgery is one of JHB Eye Hospital’s areas of expertise, which is good news for retinal detachment patients who require highly competent hands. Many of their practitioners are highly experienced in dealing with retinal detachment and treatments.
The fact that JHB Eye Hospital has a subacute-licenced facility specifically for patients who require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation following medical procedures sets them apart from other experts.
We’ve been told that JHB Eye Hospital provides excellent postoperative treatment for outpatients as well, even when patients aren’t advised to be confined to the hospital’s rehabilitation facility.
We are also especially impressed by the fact that all of their ophthalmic nurses have received training in particular ophthalmology fields. Patients feel safer in the hands of trained and knowledgeable staff, so this is great.
However, there have been some minor complaints concerning the receptionists at JHB Eye Hospital treating patients badly. In fact, it’s been reported that patients have complained that staff members yelled at them, which we find appalling.
Additionally, there are instances where patients are inadvertently overcharged for their surgeries, so we’re told. These allegations, in our opinion, are urgent and require management’s full attention.

Pros
- Has over two decades of experience
- Complete and updated with the latest medical technologies and techniques
- Also accommodates paediatric and geriatric patients
- Staff are hands-on and knowledgeable
- Great post-operation care
Cons
- Expensive
- Can be difficult to set an appointment with
Three ophthalmology specialists established the first iteration of the Sandhurst Eye Centre in 1999, which was a small eye clinic.
They have since developed it into a multi-disciplinary centre with eight surgeons who have a variety of medical specialities as partners.
The medical professionals connected to Sandhurst Eye Centre are highly qualified and well-known for being authorities in their fields of study, one of which is Dr. Johann Lamprecht.
He is a young but high-performing ophthalmologist who specialises in intra-ocular procedures. He’s experienced in administering multiple invasive surgeries, including retinal detachment repairs.
Patients prefer Sandhurst Eye Centre because it has state-of-the-art tools for diagnostic examinations, such as automated perimetry, swept-source OCT biometry, and wavefront analysis (visual fields).
Additionally, for the best eye care for patients, the clinic has a Sandhurst Vision Laboratory that is furnished with cutting-edge surgical design software, which we find impressive.
Previous patients of Dr. Lamprecht are pleased with how quickly they recovered from their procedures. They also like the clinic’s and their doctors’ follow-up visits while they are recuperating from the operation.
Superior service and cutting-edge, high-quality technology, however, frequently come at a higher cost. As expected, Sandhurst Eye Centre is a little more expensive than other clinics, however, previous patients told us that their money was well spent.
Nonetheless, some of their potential patients grumble about feeling forgotten or ignored when their calls and emails from customers remain unanswered, which isn’t ideal, especially for attracting new clients.

Pros
- Progressive clinic run by an all-women team
- Has seasoned and esteemed ophthalmologists
- Caters to a wide range of ophthalmic conditions
- Superb bedside manner
Cons
- Less popular than other clinics
- No online appointment booking
Johannesburg Vision Institute is a small but impressive ophthalmic clinic based in Bryanston. What makes this clinic unique is its people and work culture, being run by a proud and progressive all-women team.
We love how previous patients describe Johannesburg Vision Institute’s practice as safe, understanding, and trustworthy as this just reflects the quality of service the clinic delivers.
Johannesburg Vision Institute is primarily run by two sisters who are both seasoned and esteemed ophthalmologists: Dr. Farah Moti and Dr. Rabia Moti. However, Dr. Farah is more experienced, especially in leading retinal detachment surgery.
The doctors are also assisted by highly-trained and hands-on support staff, who are highly commended for their professionalism and friendliness. Even the clinic’s receptionists are commended for always warmly welcoming patients.
We also admire how past patients commend Johannesburg Vision Institute’s services from consultations to post-treatment care. Patients also appreciate how the clinic’s rates for surgeries and treatments are affordable.
We would’ve liked it better if their appointment setting is faster and more accessible, though, considering they don’t allow online bookings through their website.
Although they are smaller and less popular compared to other ophthalmology specialists, Johannesburg Vision Institute is actually leading ahead of its competitors when it comes to high ratings from previous patients, which we find impressive.
