Pros

  • Highly qualified lead surgeon
  • Great pre- and postoperative care

Cons

  • Weak customer relations
  • Reports of having rude staff

iSurgeon is an eye specialist clinic led by renowned ophthalmic surgeon Dr. Sachin Bawa. Dr. Bawa completed his medical training about 10 years ago and is currently registered with The College of Medicine, South Africa.

He is well known in the Joburg community for his successful eye operations and professional expertise. One thing we like about iSurgeon is they’re updated with modern medical equipment and techniques.

Their patients love how iSurgeon treats their patients from consultation up to postoperative care. Dr. Bawa and his staff are highly regarded by patients for being accommodating, passionate, and overall amazing at what they do.

Patients are satisfied with the quality of the clinic’s services and impressed with their surgery results. Moreover, patients love that cataract treatment is made available to them at a reasonable price.

However, we think client relations is their weak point, which is disappointing. We’re told some of iSurgeon’s patients experienced interacting with rude staff and nurses.

On top of that, there are complaints from patients saying their concerns and questions were left ignored. We hope iSurgeon can deal with this so they can accommodate more patients and maintain their good reputation as a clinic.

Pros

  • Offers post-surgery rehabilitation services
  • Accredited by and partnered with OSSA, OMG, and the National Hospital Network

Cons

  • Some incidents of overcharging
  • A few issues with unprofessional staff

JHB Eye Hospital is one of the leading eye specialists in and around Johannesburg. They’ve been in the business for over 20 years, and currently have around 75 specialists employed.

They’re accredited by and partnered with Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA) Opthalmology Management Group Ltd. (OMG), and the National Hospital Network, which really brings up the clinic’s credibility.

One of JHB Eye Hospital’s specialties is surgical procedures, which is good news for cataract surgery patients who need highly skilled hands.

What sets JHB Eye Hospital apart from other specialists is they have subacute licenced facility dedicated for patients who need comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation after medical operations.

We’re also impressed that all their ophthalmic nurses are trained in specific areas of ophthalmology and general nursing

Even when patients aren’t advised to be confined to the hospital’s rehabilitation center, we’re told JHB Eye Hospital delivers commendable postoperative care for outpatients too.

We did hear some minor grumbles about JHB Eye Hospital’s receptionists behaving rudely while dealing with patients. In fact, we’re told there are complaints from patients after they were shouted at by staff.

We’re also told there are cases where patients are mistakenly overcharged for their procedures. We think that these are urgent complaints that need the full attention of management.

Pros

  • Has the latest diagnostic technologies
  • Caters to paediatric and geriatric patients

Cons

  • Costly
  • Some complaints on unresponsiveness to queries

The Sandhurst Eye Centre started out as a small eye centre in 1999 built by three Opthalmology experts. Now, they’ve grown to be a multi-disciplinary centre partnered with eight surgeons with a broad range of medical expertise.

The doctors affiliated with Sandhurst Eye Centre are highly-skilled and are reputable for being experts in their fields of practice.

Patients choose Sandhurst Eye Centre for being equipped with the latest technology equipment for both diagnostic investigations including wavefront analysis, spectral domain OCT, swept source OCT biometry and automated perimetry (visual fields).

The surgical procedures they practice are updated and efficient too. All their services are suitable for both paediatric and geriatric patients.

The Sandhurst Eye Centre has treatments and services for several eye conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, dry eyes, and retinal conditions among others.

They also have a Sandhurst Vision Laboratory, which is equipped with state-of-the-art surgical design software for patients’ premium eye care.

Sandhurst Eye Centre’s previous patients are impressed with their prompt recovery following their surgeries. They also appreciate how the clinic and their doctors check in on them during rehabilitation.

However, superb service and new, high-quality technology often implies a heftier price tag. True to form, Sandhurst Eye Centre is a little costlier compared to other clinics – but past patients assured us that their investment was worth it.

Lastly, there are minor grievances about customers’ phone calls and emails not being responded to, leading to patients feeling ignored.

We think Sandhurst Eye Centre can strengthen their customer relations by improving their system and training their receptionists in handling patients better.

Pros

  • Well-established company with competent eye specialists
  • Value for money

Cons

  • Reports on tardiness
  • Reports on lack of responsiveness

Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic is a well-established eye specialist clinic built by the late Dr. Michiel Kritzinger, who is considered a world-renowned refractive and LASIK eye surgeon.

Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic is commended for its solid background and substantial years of professional experience. Moreover, patients feel assured that the specialists the clinic is partnered with are highly-skilled, accredited surgeons.

They specialise in eye laser procedures and optical surgeries including cataract removal, LASIK, corneal transplant, and keratoconus treatment.

Their previous patients are quite pleased with the quality of Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic’s service. They also appreciate that Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic has reasonable rates, especially considering their modern approach to ophthalmology.

Although they don’t have in-patient rehabilitation programmes, the clinic staff actively check in on their recovering patients, which is impressive.

That said, there are a few grievances about Visiomed Eye Laser Clinic’s receptionists being tardy, causing a long queue of unattended customers. We’re also disappointed to hear they’re also unresponsive toward patients’ questions and issues.

Hopefully, the clinic can improve its brand of patient care, as many patients will remember their experience with them long after the surgery is done.

Navigating the often intimidating landscape of medical procedures was a breeze with Johannesburg Vision Institute.

The Institute’s sterling reputation precedes them, and rightfully so

Their skilled surgeons and proven track record are the cornerstones of their acclaim. We were in the capable hands of pioneers in the field, reinforcing our trust in their capabilities.

While quality often comes at a premium, Johannesburg Vision Institute strikes a balance that pleasantly surprised us.

Their transparent pricing and willingness to discuss financial options eased our worries, proving that exceptional eye care doesn’t have to break the bank.

However, they don’t offer discounts at the present. We recommend checking their website for other affordable deals.

Pros

  • Friendly rates
  • Led by a reputable and skilled eye surgeon

Cons

  • Small team leading to long waiting times
  • Reports on delayed appointments and document release

Cataract patients choose Safesight Cataract & Eye Laser Centre primarily because of the eye specialist who leads the clinic, Dr. Tebogo Maleka. He’s a seasoned surgeon who is known for providing excellent patient care.

The cataract surgery itself is described by patients as a quick and straightforward process, with impressive results.

Safesight Cataract & Eye Laser Centre is also praised for taking care of their patients postoperatively.

The affordability of their services is also one of the features we like about Safesight Cataract & Eye Laser Centre. The clinic charges R 22,000 per eye for cataract surgery, which is a little below the benchmark.

However, they’re a very small team compared to other clinics. There’s only one surgeon and this often leads to a bottleneck of patients waiting in line.

Patients are upset they have to allot at least an hour of their time waiting in line before getting seen. Appointments are reportedly almost always delayed, which we find counter-efficient.

On top of that, there are cases where patients’ requested documents take so long before they’re released.

We suggest Safesight Cataract & Eye Laser Centre hire more people to improve their appointment scheduling and routines. Doing so would also allow the clinic to attend to more customers.
