Keep swinging rain or shine at the best indoor cricket arenas in Johannesburg!
I’ve always thought playing cricket outdoors hits differently. There’s just something about the smell of grass, the fresh breeze, and that bit of sunlight on the face that makes you feel alive.
But yeah, Mother Nature doesn’t always play ball. The heat can result in dehydration, rain turns the pitch into a slip ‘n slide simulator, bowlers struggle against headwinds, and cold weather adds some extra weight to the ball.
Thankfully, Johannesburg has its cricketers covered. Across the city are indoor cricket venues where you can bat and bowl without having to worry about rising mercury or cascading raindrops.
Our list below spills the deets you need, including a couple of hacks to make matches run stress-free.
Fourways Action Sports
From fourwaysactionsports
Address: Northlands Production Park, 8 Epsom Ave, Northriding
Operating Hours: Mon to Fri – 9 am to 4 pm
Travel Time from the Johannesburg CBD: 32 mins (33.4 km) via N1 Western Byp
Fresh-looking and nicely spaced, Fourway Actions Sports is a Joburg mainstay when it comes to indoor cricket.
Better yet, the prices are decent, and the games wrap up after 70 minutes, giving you every penny’s worth. There are also plenty of ways to play, including kids-only, corporate, and League, the latter ideal for the truly competitive lot.
Hopping outside to get your energy back isn’t needed either. There’s an indoor eatery rolling out pizza, brioche bun burgers, and even booze (though wait time is between 20–45 minutes).
Tips: It’s smart to bring a portable fan. The venue can get a tad toasty, especially if you’re only in spectator mode. Parking is available, so driving to the arena isn’t a bad move. Young athletes can hone their skills with the Falcon’s Youth Academy program.
Straight Drive Cricket Arena (The Cricket Shop)
From the.cricket.shop.boksburg
Address: 654 Trichardt Rd, Beyers Park, Boksburg
Contact Details: +27 10 442 1059
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 9 am to 7 pm
- Sat – 9 am to 2 pm
- Sun – 9 am to 1 pm
Travel Time from the Johannesburg CBD: 28 min (31.1 km) via N12 and Francois Oberholzer Fwy
While not exactly built for traditional, full-on matches, Straight Drive Cricket Arena is ace for tuning up your batting skills. Automated cricket simulators are the name of the game here, with prices swinging between R250 and R300 for an hour of practice.
The setup is pretty high-end. For one, their bowling simulator is purely wireless, throws at speeds of 60 kmph to 150 kmph, comes with a 36- or 100-ball auto-feeding system, and can even make balls swing or spin in either direction!
Oh, and those varied game modes give rounds a nice shake-up. Target is our go-to, as it’s great for quick-fire games where the batter only has a handful of overs to chase a target down.
Tips: You can bring your hockey or cricket bats to the shop if they need some fixing. Since padding up is needed, be at the spot at least 15 minutes before your booking time. If you’re looking to score gear, like bats and gloves, it’s smart to check what’s on sale first.
Edenvale Action Sports Arena
From action_sports_edenvale
Address: 4 Bhala Ave, Sebenza, Edenvale
Contact Details: +27 10 612 6528
Travel Time from the Johannesburg CBD: 30 min (28.4 km) via R24
Edenvale Action Sports Arena can handle whatever you throw at it. Pumped for a casual game? Fancying a company tourney? Need a new spin on bachelor parties, like these? All doable here.
See, the joint offers five international courts and all the cricket gear required for a 70-minute match with 8 players a side and a total of 16 overs. There’s no limit on who can play or have fun, either (even our non-cricketers said it was a riot).
What’s cooler is that you don’t have to bat or bowl to have a jolly time; it’s a social space with massive TVs, so kicking back works as well. Same goes for eating out, thanks to Eagle Cove Cafe, most loved for its pizza.
Tips: Don’t forget to dial their digits first. Bookings are a must, and this applies to the other games, namely dodgeball, netball, soccer, and hockey. If you’re unfamiliar with the specific rules of Action Cricket, give their rulebook a read. You can bring your own gloves.
Action Sports Meyersdal
From actionsportssa
Address: Michelle Avenue, Randhart, Alberton
Contact Details: +27 11 867 7941
Operating Hours:
- Mon to Fri – 8 am to 2 am
- Sat – 8 am to 12 am
Travel Time from the Johannesburg CBD: 23 min (16.5 km) via Heidelberg Rd/M31
Similar to the previous entries, Action Sports Meyersdal is part of the Action Sports chain. That means you’ll essentially play the same cricket format, sticking to the same rule book.
This one is a tad closer to Johannesburg, and it offers a court for hockey instead of dodgeball like the last place. Scorpions Nest, the resto here, also dishes out more deals and discounts (though the main grub is still pizza).
Tips: Crowds peak between 3 pm and 9 pm. Avoid that period if you’re looking to chill. You can throw a kiddie birthday bash here. Phone them for the info.
Action Sports Hillfox
From hillfox_actionsports
Address: 1000 Hendrik Potgieter Rd, Weltevredenpark, Roodepoort
Contact Details: +27 73 987 6380
Operating Hours: Daily – 10 am to 10 pm
Travel Time from the Johannesburg CBD: 22 min (19.5 km) via N1 Western Byp
The atmosphere is more low-key over at Action Sports Hillfox. From our experience, it doesn’t get as crowded as others (probably because the courts are smaller), so it’s solid for clearing your thoughts.
That said, the game and setup are identical. A match caps off at 70 minutes, each crew needs 8 players, and the multi-sport arena provides the gear and umpire needed for indoor cricket.
Personally, though, it’s Hungry Hawks (the bar) that made me a fan. Service can drag a little, but the 360-degree court views, TVs, drink deals, and cheerful bar crew balance it all out.
Tips: Clinics, seasonal deals, and tourneys pop up now and then. Follow them on Insta for the latest scoop. Inflatables are on deck, so don’t leave your tots at home.
