One of the hardest parts of growing older is the complications that arise with your renal health. From kidney stones to potential problems with your prostate, I cannot stress enough just how important it is to maintain your urinary health.
I have, unfortunately, had family members who have suffered from complications arising from their kidneys and bladder, and it has caused a lot of physical and emotional pain for them. Thankfully, urologists have been there to support them and their healing journeys.
So if you’re starting to feel like problems are beginning to form down there, or if you’re just particular about keeping your health up to date, then here are the best urologists in Johannesburg.

Dr. Thirusha Reddy is a reputable, tenured urologist and surgeon who specialises in many different urological and prostate treatments.
The first Indian female graduate of the University of Witwatersrand’s urology program, she has over two decades of experience in both the private and public sectors. She was also a lecturer and the head consultant at her alma mater’s teaching hospital, the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.
All this said, Dr. Reddy’s expertise in urology and renal health has been foundational to her private practice, which is comprehensive, professional, and relatively affordable. Her services include treatments for kidney stones, urinary tract infections, diagnoses and preventive treatment for prostate cancer, and laparoscopy.
My uncle, worried about prostate issues, approached Dr. Reddy for a potential diagnosis and treatment. While he was preparing for the worst, she was able to explain his situation clearly and compassionately from consultation to treatment.
Dr. Reddy diagnosed my uncle with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, also known as an enlarged prostate. She was able to treat him through this unique treatment called the Rezum of the prostate, which is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses steam.
That being said, while Dr. Reddy can be a caring, compassionate, and even funny doctor (as the memes on her website will lead you to believe), she can also be strict.
Some patients have shared that she isn’t very tolerant of patients who either come in late to their appointments, don’t trust her judgment, or book a consultation towards the end of her office hours.
In addition to this, her staff, particularly her receptionist, can make it hard to set appointments and can be dismissive.

Specialising in prostate health and male sexual health, Dr. Ahmad has spent over 2 decades refining his expertise in urology by earning his post-graduate urology specialist degree from the College of Medicine South Africa and working in both the public and private sectors.
My friend visited a fertility clinic since he and his wife wanted to have a child, and when they found that he was suffering from male infertility, the clinic referred him to Dr. Ahmad.
He was able to diagnose that my friend was suffering from Ejaculatory Duct Obstruction, or a blockage of the sperm cells.
During the consultation and treatment, which included prescribed medications and regular checkups, Dr. Ahmad was patient, kind, and explained my friend’s condition as simply and effectively as possible.
However, my friend did note that, while Dr. Ahmad himself was kind and affable, his receptionist was anything but. She was rude, hard to contact, and dismissive of his initial inquiries.

Despite being relatively new to the field compared to the competition, Dr. Sumesh Padayachee stands out because of his holistic, all-encompassing approach to urology, which equally looks at both male and female urological issues.
He’s affiliated with several reputable medical and urological associations such as the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Academic Urology Centre, and the South African Urological Association.
Specialising in oncology and minimally invasive surgeries, Dr. Padayachee’s services are divided into general urology, male urology, urological oncology, and female oncology.
When my friend started feeling pain while urinating often, she went to Dr. Padayachee to hopefully find a treatment. He diagnosed it as a urinary tract infection and incontinence, and he remained respectful of her privacy and treated her with care and kindness during treatment.
Thankfully, his personalised, holistic treatment plans and prescribed medication solved her UTI after a long recovery process.
That being said, while Dr. Padayachee’s treatment options are extensive, he’s a jack of all trades, master of none. His treatments lack the precise, niche treatments that the other doctors on the list provide, such as the previously mentioned Rezum of the prostate or endoscopic laser surgery.
This makes his relatively higher prices harder to justify, particularly for patients with very specific needs.

Dr. Kevin Ramsamy is an expert urologist with post-graduate and post-master’s degrees from prestigious universities such as the University of Pretoria and Harvard University.
He employs progressive, innovative and non-invasive treatment techniques such as penile prosthetic surgery, urethral reconstruction, and comprehensive preventive care for prostate cancer. This makes him stand out among the competition with the unique treatment options under his care.
I consulted him recently for help with what I suspected to be kidney stones, as I was having trouble urinating and felt great pain while doing so. When Dr. Ramsamy confirmed them, he suggested using endoscopic laser therapy to break down the stones and let them pass through my body.
While I was sceptical, as I wasn’t familiar with this treatment before, I nonetheless trusted Dr. Ramsamy because of the patience and consideration he showed me. When it was done, I was impressed by the efficiency of the treatment as well as his expertise when handling the advanced medical equipment.
Something concerning about the practice, though, was that, after the fact, I saw that his prices are higher compared to other urologists with more experience. I also had a bit of a problem booking a consultation, as the staff wasn’t as responsive as they could have been.

A fellow of the College of Urologists of South Africa, Dr. Salim Choonara’s specialisations in robotic surgery, urological oncology, and urethral reconstructive surgery help him stand out.
While he doesn’t have the same amount of accreditations or experience as the other doctors on his list, his specialisations in the field and his patience and empathy for his patients are still important to point out.
A friend of mine visited Dr. Choonara for laparoscopic urethral reconstruction surgery due to scarring that was found in his urethra. My friend reported that he was kind, caring, and attentive to his needs at first, and that the surgery turned out to be a success.
However, problems arose when the doctor and his staff would not follow up with my friend’s condition. He had tried to contact Dr. Choonara for advice on the post-surgery medication needed, and was unfortunately met by a lack of responsiveness and urgency from him and his staff.
When he had tried to book an appointment for post-surgery care, it took him an hour past his appointment time to be accommodated. Thankfully, by then, he was once again treated with care and concern, but this lack of communication and reachability (including a lack of a dedicated website) is a big flaw for a budding medical practice.
The doctor always takes his time to listen to the patient and is very professional and knowledgeable
Dr Choonara is a Gem. Yes there may be a wait to get an appointment. And U might wait in his office. Always remember to drink lots of water when U get there. But his level of care is amazing. Dr takes his time listening to the patient and does all his tests timeously. He then provides a course of action and follows up with the next steps in time.
