5 Picks for the Best Working Space in Johannesburg Homepage

7 Picks for the Best Working Space in Johannesburg

Amenities and perks: We listed only those with well-designed, ergonomic, and productive spaces. But those with extra amenities like gyms, break rooms, canteens or restaurants, and ample parking receive higher points.

Services: Not all co-working spaces offer extra services. So, we added extra points for those offering reception and admin services and even networking opportunities.

Availability (accessibility, location, and operating hours): Those with longer operating hours and locations near business hotspots get better ratings. We also give plus points to those allowing unlimited access—without sacrificing security, of course.

Environment: Our bare minimum in terms of environment includes good lighting, ambient to cool temperature, and low noise level.

Plan diversity and flexibility: Co-working spaces can be where you work alone, but with others, or where you collaborate extensively. So, we added extra points for those that offer flexible plans, giving you privacy or collaboration—whichever you may need at the moment.

Pricing (costs and payment options): The better the value for their co-working space plans and the more flexible their payment options, the higher their rating.

Cons

  • A bit on the pricey side
  • A few complaints about admin services

Workshop17 can be the best co-working space for just about any worker in Johannesburg. We say this because this place offers individual hot desks, private offices, and even private meeting rooms.

Aside from this diversity in available shared spaces, Workshop17 also offers a variety of workspace solutions, perfect for individuals, teams, and even big enterprises. We also like that it has over three locations scattered within or around the city for better accessibility.

For individuals, the coworking space offers the option to select either a designated area for your use or a more flexible plan where you can move around occasionally, not just across a certain location, but across all 6 other locations. There are 5 total plans for this.

As for teams, Workshop17 offers access to its own offices, board, seminar and meeting rooms, and pantries with a selection of food and beverages that members can buy using digital currency. The company even offers 30% off for each additional member.

Workshop17 also has a great food and coffee selection in their pantries and partner shops—at least, that’s what its regulars say.

Teams and enterprises also get access to various locations. This way, members can simply choose the location nearest them and work there.

Do know that Workshop17’s locations are only available on weekdays, until 6 PM at the latest.

The best thing about Workshop17 is that its Firestation location overlooks the pristine urban forest of Johannesburg. We thought this adds a conducive yet calming atmosphere you’d need to work.

That said, these benefits come at a price—one that’s high enough for clients to raise a concern. Some have also shared their experience with some bad management and admin services.

2. MESH Club

  • Connections with venues around the globe
  • Additional concierge services

  • A few complaints about cost and speed of services
  • Relatively more expensive
  • Limited to members
  • Closed on Sundays

If you’re looking for an elegant working space, then signing up as a member of MESH Club may be a good choice. It has hot desks for those on the go and private desks for those who require stability.

We also like that MESH Club features a full cocktail bar and coffee bar. So, whether you need a boost of caffeine, a healthy lunch or dinner, or just a shot of sugar or drinks, you can still benefit from this coworking space’s amenities.

Even better, all these are available from 7 AM to 11 PM, six days a week.

However, MESH’s board room ambience has also received a few critiques, with previous clients describing it as lacking in natural light and almost bunker-like. But if that’s your style, then MESH Club may certainly have the best coworking space in Johannesburg for you.

MESH Club even goes out of its way to provide concierge services. This service may cover travel arrangements, meeting scheduling, business support, and event organization.

MESH Club members even get exclusive perks at various wellness spas and salons around the city and access to online and offline fitness classes.

More importantly, MESH Club has connections with spaces around the globe, such as the Library Club in London, 1880 in Singapore, and the Brody House in Budapest. We find this especially helpful for entrepreneurs with clients around the world.

What hindered us from giving them a perfect 5 for services are the few complaints about slow and even expensive services. And with these many services, the costs for membership can be a bit costly, especially since a one-month deposit is required.

Luckily, there are annual as well as monthly plans to make payments less of a burden. There are also discounts.

  • Provides fully fledged boardroom and training facilities

Cons

  • Can be hard to book at times

The Business Exchange specializes in creating bespoke office spaces that are uniquely tailored to companies’ needs, design preferences, and styles of work.

They offer solutions for small start-up companies to larger corporate teams. They make sure to maintain a calm and quiet space to ensure that they provide an environment that is condusive for working.

Many have even praised them for their small, but well-equipped canteen as well as their secure WiFi connection.

If you have any concerns regarding their provided devices, like AV equipment, their staff is also pretty accommodating and knowledgable.

One downside, though, is that they’re pretty popular, so it may be hard to book a space. This is why it’s advisable that you book as early as you can once you have your dates and number of attendees finalized.

All in all, you can save up to 70% on total lease costs with their help, which is why we definitely recommend them for small to large teams!

  • 24/7 access
  • Online appointment forms for tour
  • Convenient app for tracking
  • Disabled-friendly facilities
  • Spacious parking and accessible by train

Cons

  • Difficult to spot sign
  • No in-house food and beverage amenities
  • Limited to members

Regus offers private offices, co-working desks, meeting rooms, and even virtual spaces to Johannesburg workers. You can even check these amenities out before committing—you just need to book a visit online.

Speaking of how techy Regus is, we should also tell you that this firm has an app. The app allows for easier tracking and management of your bookings.

This coworking space also has an open-plan kitchen for maximum collaboration and interaction within your team. And while it doesn’t have in-house food stalls besides vending machines, Regus still offers proximity to local restaurants and bars.

We also like how Regus’s coworking spaces offer ample parking despite its convenient location along commute routes. Regus also has up to three locations in the city alone, providing its clients with more options and better accessibility.

We also commend Regus for having wheelchair-accessible spaces and other disabled facilities. Clients have also consistently praised the firm for its patient, attentive, and kind staff and its well-maintained amenities.

And these are certainly big feats, especially since the coworking space is open 24/7. This may just be the best coworking space in Johannesburg if you’re looking for a place that you can go to for work anytime and any day of the week.

And did we mention that all these amenities are available for affordable prices? Pricing is on a per month basis for office and coworking spaces and on a per hour basis for meeting rooms.

However, like many others, Regus also has a few disadvantages. For one, its signage is relatively difficult to spot so you’d need to keep an eye out the first time you go to its locations.

The Workspace is yet another prominent company offering solutions with its offices, co-working spaces, meeting rooms, and virtual rooms. Meeting rooms also have full equipment, but some equipment like projectors, are subject to extra fees.

Aside from these common amenities, The Workspace also has kitchen facilities, spacious parking, and a large outdoor relaxation area. We like that all these rooms and amenities are equally available for use for members.

We also give The Workspace Blackheath a perfect score for staff services as it has received nothing but positive reviews for its admin and reception staff. Clients also appreciate this company for making work fun with various creative celebrations for special days.

It also has three other locations in Gauteng, but you’d need to travel either to Sandton or Randburg for them. Luckily, booking is made easy as The Workspace offers online booking for offices, coworking spaces, and meeting rooms.

You can even book an online tour to check out whether or not The Workspace really has the best coworking space for you.

Additionally, The Workspace makes its spaces more readily available by accepting bookings from members and non-members alike. This makes us believe that this right here can be the best coworking space in Johannesburg for just about anyone.

Still, members get more stable perks, so you may consider it, too. The Workspace offers up to 5 flexible plans, with the most expensive one providing 24/7 access to the working space.

Additionally, members get access to lockers. There are already storage units ranging from 12 to 32.5 square meters available for member companies.

It has over 10 partners, 50 startups, and 70 mentors in its circle. AfriLabs, Google for Entrepreneurs, and Venture Solutions are just some of its partners.

Aside from access to rooms and perks, JoziHub members also receive newsletters as well as invitations to events and workshops. Workshops are led by experts in the field of marketing, branding, finance, tech, business, analytics, and many more.

The company also provides assistance in event hosting and planning. And speaking of events, you can also easily book JoziHub’s spaces for events through its online booking forms.

These added services can really help startups and budding entrepreneurs with their businesses. This is the primary reason we added JoziHub to the list of the best coworking spaces in Johannesburg.

Besides, JoziHub has also gained praise from its clients for its services and amenities, especially its proximity to restaurants. However, you should know that some have also raised parking issues.
