Greenside Orthodontics stands out because of their affordable prices and their emphasis on child-friendly, comfortable orthodontic care. They have attentive, caring staff and specialised early-age and adolescent treatment plans. 

Greenside primarily focuses on their braces treatment. A standard appointment for metal, ceramic, or Invisalign braces will come with a comprehensive X-ray scan and other required services. 

I approached Greenside for my yearly retainer check-in appointments, and I was impressed by their hospitality, expertise and the other treatment options they offered. These include the early orthodontics consultation for children and the 6-month discreet braces plan, which is best for patients looking for a quick fix to their teeth. 

As mentioned earlier, Greenside seems to focus solely on braces, which can be a disadvantage if you need another treatment. You’d probably need to go to other clinics for other orthodontic specialisations, including jaw realignment and palatal expansion.

I think Choonara Orthodontics is a clinic that’ll give you a lot to chew on with the sheer number of treatments they offer. Led by Dr. Sahide Choonara, this team of oral hygienists, orthodontists, and assistants offer comprehensive orthodontic treatments. 

Their treatment plans include standard braces, Invisalign, jaw pain treatments, realignments, and retainers. My friend, who does boxing and Muay Thai with me in our free time, recommended Choonara for their athletic mouthguards, which helped protect our teeth from sustained damage. 

Unfortunately, their higher prices may be hard to swallow, as a consultation alone can cost above R5,000. While this fee is inclusive of the X-rays, impressions, and other processes, it is nonetheless higher than the competition. Moreover, some of their staff can also be a little condescending.

On a more positive note, they have very flexible payment options and accept health insurance, so it’s not too much of a problem if you’re not prepared to pay in full. For orthodontic treatment like this, Choonara Orthodontics may very well be worth the price.

With over 35 years of orthodontic experience, backed up by a master’s degree and 10,000 patients served, Dr. A.K. Seedat is an established, well-respected orthodontist. His tenure is beat only by the kindness he has shown my brother and his other patients throughout their treatment. 

Dr. Seedat primarily focuses on braces, like ceramic, metal, and Invisalign, with an option for personalised consultation for any specific orthodontic needs. The treatment options are still limited compared to other clinics, particularly lacking treatments for TMJ and malocclusions.

It must also be said, however, that the appointment process is quite inconvenient. When I took my brother to Dr. Seedat for an adult orthodontics appointment, we were perplexed by the inconvenient schedule and the lack of a price estimate. 

My brother, a full-time accountant who is also pursuing his master’s degree, was almost unable to schedule an appointment with Dr. Seedat due to his business hours. 

However, once we made the trip, we found that Dr. Seedat’s kindness and expertise as a master’s-degree-holding orthodontist gave us the treatment we were looking for.

When my mother started suffering from temporomandibular joint dysfunction (or TMJ), I knew I needed to find an orthodontist who specialised in it. Thankfully, Dr. Cyril Sher’s comprehensive, affordable treatment options helped relieve my mother’s jaw pain.

One complaint, however, was with the operating room. The open operating room made the consultation and surgery easily overheard by other patients, which made my mother uncomfortable. I don’t think anyone would want their personal business to be public like that! 

Furthermore, the clinic’s business hours may be inconvenient for patients who need orthodontic operations done during work or school hours.
