Pros

  • Offers value for money
  • Generous portion sizing
  • Great recipes

Cons

  • Poor customer service
  • Inconsistent servicing
  • Reports on delayed orders

Galito’s is one of South Africa’s success stories in the food industry. They were founded 26 years ago and now, they have around 210 stores in 17 countries.

They have an extensive menu featuring grilled chicken meals, chicken livers, chicken strips made into hearty bowls, and burgers. We like that they offer a variety of sides to complement the main dishes.

Also, it’s great that they offer big-appetite and group-sized meals on their menu. We also like that they offer healthier options, which means they can cater to a wider more people in terms of food preference.

Galito’s customers love how their food tastes “like home”. Aside from being delicious, their dishes are really filling too as they give generous portion sizing for chicken parts – perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Another thing we love about Galito’s is its affordable menu. One of the crowd’s favourites is the Quarter Chicken + Jumbo Pap, which is just R 45 per serving.

With their ample portions and unique taste, this restaurant offers great value for money.

While we admire how big they’ve grown as a business, having several branches all over the country might make it difficult to maintain a certain standard.

We’re told there are inconsistencies in Galito’s customer servicing depending on which branch you order from.

There are several grievances from customers regarding late orders and missing items from their purchases. We’re also a bit disappointed with how Galito’s actions to deal with customers’ concerns, or should we say the lack of it.

We’re told their representatives are difficult to get ahold of and customers’ enquiries and concerns are often swept under a rug, which is a red flag for us.

Pros

  • Offers plant-based menu
  • Also sells a variety of food products such as sauces
  • Clean place and good ambience

Cons

  • Reports on wrong orders
  • Reports on unsatisfactory food quality
  • Bad food presentation

Nando’s started way back in 1987. They’re popular for their thorough menu of chicken meals, burgers, snacks, and sides.

One thing we found noteworthy about Nando’s menu is they recently added healthier food items such as plant-based wraps and veggie bowls. We also like that they have thirst-quenching drinks and a long list of snacks and sides to choose from.

Nando’s customers return to the restaurant for their food’s distinct taste: flavourful with a little bit of spiciness. They love how even singular meals are substantial and that their prices are reasonable.

Another remarkable thing about this chicken restaurant is they also sell a variety of peri-peri sauces, dressings, and ready-to-eat food boxes.

Aside from convenience, this is great for customers who want to try out Nando’s sauces at home to spice up their own dishes.

Location-wise, Nando’s customers love that their area is accessible, clean, and has an overall homey vibe, which makes it a great place to stop by and grab a meal.

However, we’re a tad disheartened with the restaurant’s unpredictable servicing. Customers are disappointed after receiving wrong orders and finding some items missing from their purchases. Some also grumble that their food looks like it was tossed around and haphazardly prepared.

What’s worse, some customers experienced unsatisfactory food quality. Complainants report they received stale food, dry and limp veggies, and sometimes burnt chicken.

Pros

  • Has a diverse menu
  • Offers Halaal food
  • Affordable prices for ample food serving

Cons

  • Poor customer service
  • Reports on poor quality food items
  • Long waiting time

For Portuguese food cravings, Calisto’s is a good choice. They were established in 1992 and since then, they were committed to bringing authentic Portuguese flavours into town.

One thing we found remarkable about Calisto’s is its diverse menu of Portuguese cuisine. We also love that they have a separate menu for Halaal food.

Calisto’s chicken meals are the restaurant’s best sellers, but they also have seafood, meat, and pasta on their menu. Their customers keep coming back for the chicken restaurant’s flavorful dishes and authentic taste.

We also noted that their prices are affordable, especially considering the food’s quality. Calisto’s customers describe the restaurant’s chicken menu as mouth-watering and substantial.

Calisto’s is situated at The Zone @ Rosebank, which makes it easy to find. Because it’s near business centres and other establishments, they’re often filled with customers.

While Calisto’s in-store staff are often complimented for being helpful and earnest to serve, their representatives handling their landline and online orders aren’t stellar.

We’re told some customers are disheartened after experiencing bad service. There are cases where the food that arrived at customers’ tables is wrong.

Also, some customers experienced waiting for more than an hour for their food to arrive, only to be served with undercooked chicken.

Generally, Calisto’s is a great choice for family meals but customers have to be wary that their service quality wavers from time to time.

Pros

  • Diffierent cultural takes on chicken dishes
  • Unique restaurant interior and good ambience

Cons

  • A bit expensive
  • Inconsistent customer service
  • Reports on unsatisfactory food quality and taste

If you aren’t really sure what you want to eat but are craving for authentic flavours, you might want to consider Al-Hamra Restaurant. The first thing we like about this restaurant is their menu is a mix of dishes from different cultures.

Although they also have seafood, mutton, beef, and vegetable dishes, it’s evident that their speciality is chicken.

Al-Hamra Restaurant has a variety of chicken specials which are mostly Indian, Bangladeshi, and Chinese. On top of that, we love that their menu is loaded with choices although it can get overwhelming for first-timers.

Whilst their chicken menu is composed of different flavours, customers love how each dish tastes authentic. They also appreciate the portion sizing which makes the meal so filling.

Ambience-wise, Al-Hamra’s interiors are filled with outdated decor which will make you feel like you’re entering a door to the past. However, some customers find it quirky and treat the place as a hidden gem.

Though most of their customers are satisfied with how Al-Hamra’s values their food, there are some complaints about the meal size and price proportion for specific dishes.

Their customer service is inconsistent too. We’re told some customers experienced dealing with rude, unprofessional staff.

Moreover, complainants say their food is often late too. There are also a handful of grievances regarding the food’s quality and taste, saying that some food served is bland and stale.

Thankfully though, we noticed a huge improvement from customers’ more recent feedback regarding the restaurant’s servicing. We hope Al-Hamra’s will be able to master their recipes better too to deal with food quality unpredictability.

Pros

  • Good location
  • Reasonable prices
  • Well known for delicious and flavourful chicken wings

Cons

  • Often busy and fully booked
  • Weak customer servicing
  • Reports on serving cold wings

The Wing Republic is a popular food joint in Braamfontein. There’s a current hype for their (yes, you guessed it!) chicken wing meals, which locals literally line up for.

Aside from wings, The Wing Republic also sells burgers, pork and beef ribs, salads, desserts, and a long list of non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks.

Beyond their great food, The Wing Republic is also sought-after for its rates. They’re well known for serving a hearty meal for a cheap price.

Their famous buffalo wings that come in 18 different flavours are only R 75 for six pieces. You can also avail it in sets of 12, 18, and 24.

The restaurant is placed in a busy location, causing it to be filled with people every day. Their customers also love the homey and chill vibe of the place, which makes it more attractive to hang in at.

So, if you want to try their wings out, you might want to call in in advance!

Because their business is busy everyday, Customers complain about being served cold wings, which is a disappointment when customers had high expectations.

In addition, because of their busy business, some tables are served late, and it’s not really comforting when what you get is stale food.
