Pros
- Accommodates part-time attendance
- Small, focused class size
- Has superb facilities
- Well-staffed with experienced children’s teachers
- Meals are home-cooked and Halaal-certified
Cons
- A few reports of bullying
- Tuition does not include aftercare and extra activities
Houghton Estate Preschool is one of the leading kindergartens in Johannesburg. One reason we included them on our list is for their top-notch facilities.
It’s a plus for us that the school’s premises are clean and safe for children. We like how the place gives off a fun energy too.
One of Houghton Estate Preschool’s missions is to balance its programme with classroom and outdoor learning, which we commend. Their classes are small and focused, allowing teachers to give all students equal attention and support.
Houghton Estate Preschool offers two packages: half and full-day programmes. The tuition fee depends on which programme you’ll enrol your child in.
For the half-day schedule, which runs from 7:00 AM – 1:00 PM, the annual fees cost R 43,800. In the meantime, the full-day package (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM) is R 50,400.
The tuition fees also cover all meals and snacks, which are all home-cooked and Halaal-certified. Take note, though, that homework assistance, aftercare and other activities cost additional fees.
We think it’s awesome how Houghton Estate Preschool accommodates part-time attendance, allowing students to attend twice or thrice a week instead of daily.
This is helpful, especially for those who can’t afford the full annual fees for their half-and full-day packages. Also, it can help children who are still adjusting to the concept of going to school.
Lastly, we love how Houghton Estate Preschool is well-staffed with experienced children’s teachers. They also have a separate team for the aftercare and homework assistance programme, which is nice.

Pros
- Medium-sized classes
- Offers grades RR to 7
- Very cheap tuition fees
- Excellent facilities
- Accredited by Umalusi
Cons
- Reports of having rude personnel
- Poor communication
City Kidz Pre & Primary School is an inner-city school and is a Section 21 non-profit company. They were built as part of Afhco’s social responsibility projects.
They’ve grown a lot as an institution ever since it opened its doors to the public in 2008. They’re also accredited by Umalusi, which we think is great as it ups their credibility.
City Kidz Pre & Primary School accommodates around 750 students yearly. Their classes are medium-sized, usually having around 28 kids per class, which isn’t so bad.
We think it’s fantastic that they offer programmes for grades RR to 7. This way, it’ll be easier for kindergarteners to adjust when they move to the grade 1 level.
City Kidz Pre & Primary School is a popular choice mainly because of their very cheap school fees. Aside from the R 600 registration fee, the monthly tuition only costs R 1,050 for eleven months.
We also like that City Kidz Pre & Primary School has complete facilities furnished with an aftercare room, computer lab, playground, sick room, tuckshop, and an art and choir room.
Nonetheless, we are disappointed to hear several grievances from several parents regarding City Kidz Pre & Primary School’s reportedly rude receptionists. We’re told that the staff can be irritable and often cuts lines even when parents are not yet done talking.
Aside from the poor personnel behaviour, we think City Kidz Pre & Primary School should also improve on their communication with parents and guardians.
These parents have a handful of grumbles, saying they find it difficult to talk with the school’s representatives.
They shared with us their frustration after they enquired about the school and the staff just told them to view the website to look for the answer to their questions instead of answering.

Pros
- Secured premises
- Member of ER24
- Has a structured curriculum
- Has highly-commended teachers
- Accepts children as young as three months old
Cons
- Rare reports of looking after sick children
- Tuition fees are not posted on their website
Bedfordview Baby and Toddler Centre Nursery School is a unique community kindergarten. One thing that sets them apart from other schools is their very lenient accommodation policy.
One of Bedfordview Baby and Toddler Centre Nursery School’s primary purposes is to provide a safe and nurturing space for children while their parents and guardians are out for work.
So, they accept children as young as three months and up to six years old. To make sure they’re able to build an encouraging learning environment, teachers use an interactive approach, which we think is a great strategy.
We appreciate how notable their curricula are, mixing exposure to nature and the environment with different media to build up children’s creativity.
Bedfordview Baby and Toddler Centre Nursery School’s teachers and staff are highly commended for their professionalism and commitment to teaching. Parents appreciate how the teachers go above and beyond to provide the children the best care possible.
It’s also a big plus for us how serious this school is about the children’s safety. The school’s premises have 40 CCTVs in total and gates are secured with key pin access.
We love how all teachers and personnel are trained for first aid administration and they have a structured emergency plan ready. Furthermore, Bedfordview Baby and Toddler Centre Nursery School is a member of ER24.
Their enrolment schedule and tuition fees are not available on their website though, so if you’re interested, you’d have to drop by the school or give them a call.

Pros
- Offers early Jewish education
- Structured daily schedule
- Offers four different classes based on students’ age
Cons
- No aftercare programme
- Charges an extra R 600 every term
If you’re Jewish and are looking for a kindergarten where your child will be able to learn within a community with the same beliefs, Rimon Jewish Play School and Nursery can be a great option you can consider.
While it functions just like any other kindergarten, what’s special about this school is it offers early Jewish education.
Moreover, the activities and their overall approach to teaching aim to prepare your child to be a functional individual in the Jewish community, as well as the whole of society.
One thing we liked about Rimon Jewish Play School and Nursery is their structured list of activities and organised daily schedule, which is also available on their webpage, allowing guardians to keep track of the children’s timetable.
Activities run from 7:45 AM to 12:30 PM every day. Take note, though, that they don’t offer an aftercare programme, which can be a deal-breaker for some.
Rimon Jewish Play School and Nursery has four different classes, each based on the student’s age: 1-2, 2-3, 4-5, and 4-5 years old. The faculty is a lean team of four experienced teachers, one teacher for each class.
Their tuition fees are a fixed R 2,500 per month, regardless of what class your child is enrolled in. They also charge an additional R 600 per term as a “levy”, however, it’s not really clear what this is for.

Pros
- Accepts children aged 18 months to 6 years
- Great facilities
- Well-researched curriculum
- Fully-staffed with seasoned children’s teachers
Cons
- Has higher tuition fees compared to others
- Imposes additional fees for clubs and aftercare
Fleming Pre-Primary and Early Learning Centre is one of the most- and highest-rated kindergartens in Johannesburg. They’re preferred for their excellent programme and their focused and interactive approach to learning.
Many parents appreciate Fleming’s teacher-student ratio, which is usually 1:3. Because of this, teachers are able to provide hands-on assistance and equal attention to all children.
Fleming Pre-Primary and Early Learning Centre is very well-equipped when it comes to learning materials, teaching staff, and personnel.
Currently, the school is being run by almost 30 individuals designated for teaching, administration, kitchen management, and security.
Another feature we love is their superb facilities. Fleming Pre-Primary and Early Learning Centre has two spacious properties.
Each is used for the two programmes they offer which are 1) an early learning programme for children aged 18 months to 3 years old, and 2) pre-primary programmes for children aged 3-6 years old.
Both centres are clean, spacious, and secured. We love how there’s plenty of space for the students to explore the outdoors.
We also love Fleming Pre-Primary and Early Learning Centre’s well-researched curriculum. They advocate for informal education, mixing structured activities with free-play endeavours.
Fleming Pre-Primary and Early Learning Centre’s enrolment fee is fixed and non-refundable, priced at R 4,000 every month. This is quite expensive compared to other kindergartens in the area.
On top of that, they also charge a once-off levy of R 3,200 paid at the beginning of the term. This is used as a subscription fee to the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA), as well as other educational activities.
