The 5 Best Private Schools in Johannesburg

Accessibility: We like private schools with justifiable admissions processes. Those close to neighbourhoods or those offering transportation solutions also have added points.

Core values and culture: Of course, we only listed schools with good core values. But we also value inclusivity, which is why we've highly rated schools that encourage instead of imposing.

Class size: A small student to teacher ratio is better as it means teachers need only divide their attention among a few students.

Curriculum, educational materials and support: We ranked private schools in Johannesburg according to how well rounded and in-depth their courses and classes are, how accessible their course materials are, and how much support they give their students. These are important in considering the accessibility of education in a school.

Extra-curricular opportunities: Extracurriculars are also important for holistic development, which is why we value highly those schools encouraging other modes of learning.

Cost and financial aid: It's no secret that private schools are expensive. So, we added information on whether or not the school grants bursaries, scholarships, and discounts.

Pros

  • Lax uniform policies
  • Instalment payment plans, scholarships, and bursaries
  • Holistic education and state-of-the-art facilities
  • Caters to preschool to college students
  • One-on-one tours
  • Convenient online admission forms

Cons

  • Relatively more expensive fees
  • Lengthy online admission forms

Reddam House Bedfordview has two campuses, the main being for senior high and college students and the BCC campus for nursery up to high school students. This distinction gives students enough space for their activities.

The proximity of both campuses also makes it a good option for families who want to enrol their children in the same institution until college.

We like that Reddam House Bedfordview values academics, sports, and the creative arts equally. As a testament to this, the private school’s college and senior high school campus have modern laboratories and vibrant classrooms as well as spacious sports courts and playgrounds.

It also maintains inclusivity by hiring speech, occupational and remedial therapists to further support students who may be struggling at first.

The private school also offers virtual and face to face class options, making education more accessible to students from all walks of life. This commitment to holistic education is why we added the school to this list in the first place.

The school also has a cafeteria with an online ordering system so parents can preorder and prepay for their children’s meals. That’s a really nice, convenient touch.

Speaking of online orders, Reddam House’s application is also conveniently done online! The form, however, is lengthy and requires various documents to be uploaded online, including parent signatures.

We also like that the private school provides one-on-one bookings. These tours can give families the chance to get used to the school and to ask all their questions.

While its fees are certainly no joke, Reddam House still received a few points for financial accessibility as it offers scholarships, bursaries, and even discounts for siblings. Besides, the private school also offers monthly and quarterly payment options.

We also like that Reddam House allows students to choose freely among its various sets of uniforms.

Pros

  • Boarding and day school option
  • Strong international and national connections
  • Enrichment programs for holistic education
  • Online admission process
  • Good support for sports

Cons

  • Mainly limited to boys
  • Less support for arts and other non-academic and non-athletic activities
  • Expensive rates and application fees

St. John’s College is one of the best private schools not only in Johannesburg but also in the entirety of South Africa. Let’s talk about why.

While its teachings are based on the Anglican church, it still accepts, respects, and even celebrates other faith communities. The school also offers the students day and boarding school options.

The school even conducts enrichment programs, providing education to young boys in Hillbrow, Yeoville, and Berea. These programs showcase the school’s good values, we think.

What we like about St. John is that it offers education for all levels of students. So, those who find this a good school from the beginning can continue with their St. John’s education until college.

St. John’s bridge nursery follows various curricula, including Waldorf, Montessori and Reggio. Meanwhile, its post-matric education also achieves excellent results at the Cambridge International Examinations.

To add to this, St John’s College also offers various opportunities to students. We say this because the private school has ties with the G20 group of schools.

St. John’s also has a gym with sports scientists on duty for holistic development. Those interested in chess, polo, golf, rowing, basketball, and other sports may thus find this school perfect for their development.

It was traditionally an all-boys school, by the way, but it has since expanded to include girls. However, girls are only accepted in the sixth form and bridge nursery programs.

St. John’s admissions are also made easier as they can now be done completely online. But the catch is that families still need to pay an R500 fee to submit the application form.

Now that we’re talking about fees, we think you should also know that St. John’s requires a deposit upon admission. Luckily, these fees can be used again for the next academic year.

Besides, you can also pay the school’s fees via instalment payments made either every month, term, or year.

Pros

  • Strong international and national connections
  • Small class sizes
  • Diverse and well-balanced set of extracurriculars
  • Day and boarding options
  • Priority for daughters and siblings of former students
  • One-on-one tours

Cons

  • Priority for daughters and siblings of former students
  • Financial aid is not available for junior high
  • Additional school application fees

Among the top Johannesburg private schools, Roedean School may just be the best for senior high students. We say this for several reasons.

First of all, Roedean School has up to 85 connections to international schools, thus providing its students with more opportunities while still in school.

Speaking of opportunities, students of the school also have various clubs and extracurricular activities to choose from. This brings us to our second reason—we listed Roedean School for its commitment to holistic education.

Roedean School highly values creative and performing arts as well as sports. Roedean School even goes a step further by prioritizing gifted and talented children for its scholarships and bursaries.

Just take note that these financial aids are only available for junior school students.

Third, we listed Roedan School because of its small class sizes, accommodating only 25 students per grade. Do know that Roedan School only offers high school education.

That said, admissions can be quite competitive, especially since siblings and daughters of former Roedan School students receive higher priority. Despite this double-edged sword, each applicant is fairly assessed.

Another good thing is that school boarding offers the best facilities and care for the students. Students get three meals a day, 24/7 access to a nurse, psychological and emotional care, and weekly bonding events.

Lastly, Roedan’s facilities prove that it’s among the best private schools in Johannesburg as it has a cathedral, gardens, science laboratories, IT spaces, gyms, courts, and a pool. You can even book a tour of the campus via Roeden’s website.

Pros

  • Relatively less expensive tuition fees with discounts
  • Small class sizes
  • Separate campuses for high school and primary school
  • Consistently high matric ratings

Cons

  • Located outside city limits
  • Additional fees for aftercare and first-time registration
  • No college education offered

Sparrows Private School deserves a spot on this list because it has achieved a 100% matric passing rate and was listed in the Cambridge University Students’ Union guide for the past seven years.

We also find it helpful that Sparrows offers this level of excellence to Johannesburg boys and girls alike. The school also accepts a mixture of cultures and religions, incorporating music and art from different cultures in the curriculum.

Another thing that makes Sparrows Private School inclusive is it offers education for those in Grade 000 up to Grade 12. That said, it doesn’t offer college education.

The school only accepts around 360 students per year, giving a good 1 to 7 ratio with teachers. Parents don’t even have to worry about crowding in the schools because Sparrows has two separate campuses for high school and primary school.

The school also makes itself more accessible financially. We say this because, among the best private schools in Johannesburg, Sparrows Private School has among the lowest tuition fees, reaching only R57600 per year.

Sparrows also offers a 5% discount for those paying full at the first week of the academic year. These advantages are why we gave the school a perfect score for costs.

However, do know that these costs only cover care until 2:00 PM, so you’ll need to pay an extra R 2400 per term for aftercare. There are also fees for admissions, but only for new applicants.

Aside from these minor cons, Sparrows also has the disadvantage of being located outside the city limits.

If you want to enrol your child in this school, you can simply answer the school’s online contact forms. Do know that enrollment forms are to be filled physically, but can be submitted via fax or email.

Pros

  • Multilingual education
  • Diverse and well-balanced set of extracurriculars
  • School bus solutions
  • Convenient and conducive location
  • Sibling discounts and instalment payment options

Cons

  • No high school and college education
  • No online or downloadable forms

For those looking for top private schools for multilingual learning, Orban School may be a good option. That’s because this Johannesburg-based school offers its classes in English and Afrikaans.

Dual-medium classes are available to toddlers entering Grade 000 up to young adolescents in Grade 7. Orban School’s website even has text in both languages, which we find to be a good indication of their adherence to dual-medium learning.

Orban School even offers isiZulu as a secondary language. Moreover, its curriculum is a perfect mix of language, life skills, natural science, math and technology, social sciences, and physical training.

This school also has small class sizes, not exceeding 20 per class.

We also find its location in the heart of Melville Koppies an advantage, especially since young students need a conducive environment for their academics and extracurriculars.

Speaking of extracurriculars, we also like to share that Orban School integrates music, sports, drama, dance, and even life skills in its curriculum. It also actively participates in community efforts like charity drives and city mini councils.

While it already has a convenient location in the city, Orban School still offers transportation solutions via bus. These features enabled the school to get a perfect score for accessibility.

Parents who need aftercare services for their kids may also benefit from this school as it offers lunch, homework, and playground supervision after classes.

Now if you want to apply for this school, you’ll need to call or send an email to the school admin as it doesn’t have downloadable or online admission forms.

As for fees, Orban School has relatively more expensive yearly and first-time admission fees. But the good thing is that the school also offers instalment options and discounts for siblings and those paying before a certain date.
