Pros
- Black-owned and run company
- Thriving company with experience dealing with big clients
- Committed to national waste policies
- Handles several kinds of waste
- Implements proper handling and safety precautions
Cons
- Relatively new business
- Far location
Clean Dot Waste is one of the leading waste management companies in Gauteng Province. They’re relatively new in the business, with only a little more than five years of experience.
Despite that, Clean Dot Waste has made impressive progress in building its business name. With their expertise and advanced technology, they’re able to partner with big clients and handle their dirt for them, which we find impressive.
Most of their clients are large corporates, municipalities and restaurants.
We think it’s empowering to see how a humble black-owned and run company grew to be this big in such a short period of time. The majority of their staff are people of colour, too.
One remarkable feature of Clean Dot Waste is its versatility. They work with several types of waste, including food waste, hazardous waste, industrial waste, and rubble.
As for their equipment, Clean Dot Waste is prepared with modern industrial cleaning equipment and processors. The company has vacuum trucks, high-pressure water jetting, septic tank drainages, and skip trucks.
Their staff are highly-trained to operate all equipment effectively and safely. In addition, they’re also prepared to follow SA’s Waste Management Act and stick to strict timelines.
We love that they’re committed to following national waste policies and applying them to uphold a high standard in all their projects.

Pros
- Adheres to ISO quality
- Accredited and audited by e-Waste Association of South Africa
- Member of The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa
- Also offers data sanitisation
- Collects wastes from your address
Cons
- Unresponsive
- Limited to electronics and data disposal
AST Recycling is a young but prominent waste management company that specialises in electronic waste (e-waste). They’re dedicated to sustainability and are committed to circular economy, which focuses on sharing, maintaining, and reusing, among others.
What’s remarkable about AST Recycling is they’re the only company in the country that is certified by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) on handling e-waste.
We’re also impressed to know that they’re an accredited member of The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa.
Aside from electronic waste recycling, AST Recycling also offers IT Asset Management (ITAM) and IT Asset Disposal (ITAD). On top of that, they also work on data sanitisation, which is awesome.
To encourage consumers to practise proper waste disposal, we think it’s a brilliant strategy for AST Recycling to personally collect waste from your address. This way, clients are spared the hassle of bringing the scraps to the site themselves.
In addition, in partnership with a DIY Retailer, they were able to put up e-waste recycling bins in Fourways, Boksburg, Greenstone, and Little Falls. We love how these mobile recycling bins make proper disposal more accessible to the public.
Nonetheless, there are a few minor grumbles about the company’s unresponsive customer representatives. We’re told some have sent in questions about what AST Recycling does, but haven’t heard back until now.
We think improving the company’s communication with potential clients plays a big part in the company’s growth and in promoting good waste management.

Pros
- Seamless process
- Prompt service
- Builds recycling and waste management centres on-site
- Also has skip bins for rent
Cons
- Big capital needed
- More suitable for institutions
Bekabee is more than just your regular garbage disposal solutions company. Aside from standard waste removal, they also provide environmentally-friendly recycling hubs, which they’re more popular for.
These hubs are designed to be complete recycling and waste management centres built on-site. Our favourite thing about this is how it empowers the public to practise proper waste management and promote recycling.
Bekabee also provides full-time waste management staff that are trained to handle waste separation. Then, their team regularly comes over to the site to clear out the collected and segregated waste.
Moreover, they have durable and safe skip bins available for rent at reasonable rates. These skip bins are perfect for homes, businesses, and events.
Clients prefer Bekabee’s services for its uniqueness as a business and its seamless process. They’re also dedicated to prompt service, which clients strongly appreciate.
Bekabee has three levels of recycling centres to match budgets: basic, premium, and core. The difference between the three is each site’s capacity and complexity of designs.
Although the company aims to provide cost-efficient solutions to waste management, it’s worth mentioning that building your own recycling and waste management centre requires quite a bit of capital.
The basic version of the recycle centre requires a one-time payment of R 99,999 for the site set-up, then a monthly charge for waste collection and management. The set-up alone for the premium recycling centre costs R 149,999.
While it would be cool to have one in your backyard, we think it’s too much of an expense for homes. Instead, these are recommended for institutions like universities and schools and businesses.

Pros
- ISO-certified company
- Focused on waste reduction
- Gives rebate for every kg of waste recycled
- Offers onsite waste management
Cons
- Not equipped to handle hazardous and toxic waste
- Inactive client communications
WastePlan is a waste management specialist owned by Nika Capital, which is a non-profit development-oriented company that focuses on bridging the gap in socio-economic inequality.
Nika is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation that acts like a trust for companies like WastePlan.
The first thing we like about this company is its well-built internal organisation led by strong professionals and environmental experts. We love that their plans and vision as a company are so clear, and we admire the company’s values.
We also find it remarkable that WastePlan takes sustainability seriously. Unlike other waste management companies, they’re more focused on waste reduction and are highly active in recycling.
Thus, they primarily deal with general waste produced from everyday life and less on hazardous and toxic waste.
WastePlan has been certified by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) for several aspects: quality, environmental, health and safety, and safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ).
They offer quite a long list of services that provide different solutions for proper waste disposal. One of our favourites is the on-site waste management.
This service intends to keep businesses compliant with proper waste disposal in the workplace and reduce waste taken to landfills, hassle-free.
What WastePlan does is provide the business with a comprehensive management plan that strictly adheres to South African legislations. This way, the company is able to lift waste management responsibilities off the business’ shoulders.
WastePlan also encourages its clients to recycle as much as possible. To incentivise this practice, the company pays a rebate for every kilogram of waste recycled.

Pros
- Has over three decades of experience
- Members of IWMSA and SAWMEA
- Well-equipped with more than 100 garbage trucks
- Accredited by South African Bureau of Standards (SABS)
Cons
- Poor customer service
- A few reports on having unprofessional staff
Skip Waste is one of the first waste disposal companies that operated in South Africa. After more than three decades of providing their services, they’ve grown to be one of the frontrunners in the business.
The first reason why we chose Skip Waste is their credibility. The company is a proud member of the Institute of Waste Management South Africa (IWMSA) and the South African Waste Management Employers Association (SAWMEA).
On top of that, they’re also accredited by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
Another thing we like is the company’s preparedness. We’re impressed that Skip Waste has more than 100 garbage trucks upgraded with a satellite vehicle tracking system, which allows real-time monitoring.
All their depots are also equipped with CCTVs for security monitoring and quality control. With their Material Recovery Facility, Skip Waste is able to handle tonnes of garbage.
Skip Waste deals with all types of waste, including hazardous and chemical. They also offer several services focused on recycling, waste management, and rubble removal.
There are a handful of grievances regarding Skip Waste’s poor customer service. Clients shared with us their disappointment after their concerns were ignored multiple times.
Lastly, there are also complaints about some staff members who were reportedly rude and unprofessional when approached by a client.
We hope Skip Waste can address this problem and improve its customer relations.
