Johannesburg’s Most Recommended Surgeons for Septoplasty

Expertise – The first thing we assessed is the surgeons’ expertise in otolaryngology. We prefer doctors with solid educational backgrounds and ample professional experience.

Credibility – We also looked at the clinic and doctor’s credibility by checking their track record and accreditations. It’s also a plus for us if they’re part of a professional network.

Facilities – The clinics we selected have updated, complete, and safe facilities. We also took note of the clinic’s space and ambience to make sure that patients are provided with a clean, sizable, and safe space.

Patient care – It’s important to us that patients are well cared for before, during, and after their septoplasty operation. We looked at the clinic’s staff’s attentiveness and attitudes when assisting patients and potential clients.

Pros

  • Young but high-performing specialist
  • Impressive background
  • Commended for superb bedside manner
  • Supported by highly-trained staff
  • Great doctor-patient relationships

Cons

  • Late responses to inquiries
  • No online appointment setting

Dr. Dean Gersun is a young but high-performing registered ear, nose, and throat medical specialist. He graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in 2009 and completed his ENT training in 2014.

In addition, Dr. Gersun also accomplished a fellowship training in otorhinolaryngology in 2018 at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

It’s not just his educational background that’s impressive. Dr. Gersun also has ample experience working in several clinics and hospitals.

Moreover, he actually runs one of his own called the Tongue Tie clinic, although this one focuses on tongue tie treatment and circumcision.

Many prefer Dr. Gersun’s medical services because of his comforting attitude and superb bedside manner. Patients greatly appreciate the doctor’s efforts to make sure they’re well-informed and comfortable every step of the way.

We love how Dr. Gersun is very open and communicative as well. Previous patients who had septoplasty and treatment from the doctor commend their overall experience, starting from the consultations.

We’re told that their post-operation care is great too. We love how Dr. Gersun is supported by highly-trained staff who are very hands-on in handling and checking in on patients.

Previous septoplasty patients also often compliment the nurses and receptionists for being friendly and attentive to their needs, which is a big plus for us.

Because of this, many of Dr. Gersun’s patients have been going to his clinic for years already, which is great as it reflects great doctor-patient relationships.

We would’ve liked it better if patients can easily set appointments through a website, though. We’re also told that the clinic’s representatives are quite inactive in responding to inquiries, which can be a hassle for patients, especially those with urgent concerns.

Pros

  • Has over three decades of experience
  • Has experience abroad
  • Great post-surgery care
  • Recognised fellow of American Academy Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
  • Member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons
  • Active in the academe

Cons

  • Difficult to reach out to
  • Less popular than other clinics

Although Dr. Brian Wolfowitz’s clinic is less popular when it comes to online presence and patient feedback, Dr. Wolfowitz is actually a known veteran when it comes to cosmetic and functional surgery of the nose.

He specialises particularly in rhinoplasty and septoplasty. What’s impressive is he has administered thousands of nose jobs already ever since he started his practice over three decades ago.

Dr. Wolfowitz is a seasoned professional with a PhD in the Faculty of Science from the University of the Witwatersrand. We’re also impressed to find that he’s very active in the academe and is the author of 38 scientific papers in international journals.

Aside from his notable wealth of experience, Dr. Wolfowitz is also a valued member of a wide network of medical professionals.

He is a recognised fellow of American Academy Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and an active member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons.

Dr. Wolfowitz is also part of the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the General Medical Council (UK), which we find impressive.

Past patients who availed of Dr. Wolfowitz’s services are highly satisfied with their septoplasty outcomes. Their clinic is also highly commended for amazing post-surgery care.

It was shared with us how the doctor and his staff are very knowledgeable and communicative, especially regarding the risks post-surgery and proper management. Patients also appreciate how the clinic’s facilities are well-kept and comfortable.

Our only issue with Dr. Brian Wolfowitz’s clinic is they’re a tad difficult to reach out to. There are a few minor complaints about potential patients’ inquiries being left unanswered, which isn’t ideal.

Pros

  • Has 40 years of experience
  • Well-supported with trained and qualified nurses and anaesthetists
  • Updated with the latest medical techniques and equipment
  • Has experience overseas

Cons

  • Long waiting time
  • Often fully booke

Dr. Deon P. Rossouw is another highly-sought after ear nose and throat (ENT) specialist and surgeon. He completed his medical training at the University of Pretoria and currently has about 40 years’ worth of professional experience.

Ever since he started his medical practice, Dr. Rossouw has been able to work in the public and private medical sectors. He also has experience in training and working abroad and in other provinces in South Africa.

One of the things we love about this doctor is his commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Thus, Dr. Rossouw is very active in attending various conferences, courses, and workshops both in the local and international scenes.

On top of that, we love how they’re updated with the latest medical techniques and equipment. Previous patients also compliment the clinic’s facilities for being complete and well-maintained.

Dr. Rossouw’s clinic is well-staffed, and he is supported by a team of adept nurses and anaesthetists. The clinic’s staff are also praised for their remarkable bedside manner and apparent expertise in the ENT field.

Their nurses are all very hands-on in checking in on patients and assisting them while they recover from the septoplasty, which is awesome. Patients also appreciate the nurses’ efforts to answer all questions and reassure them to rid of any anxiety post-op.

Overall, the services Dr. Rossouw’s clinic provides its patients are excellent and consistent, which are important to us.

However, take note that the clinic is quite popular and is often fully booked. Also, there are multiple grumbles about the very long waiting time in the clinic.

We’re told some patients had to wait for about two hours before being seen by the doctor, which is too much of an inconvenience for patients, especially if they set an appointment beforehand.

Pros

  • Member of the ENT Society of South Africa
  • Fellow at the College of Otorhinolaryngologists of South Africa
  • Completed multiple training courses in ENT

Cons

  • Complaints about poor service
  • Inactive representatives

Next on our list is Dr. M. G. Lamola, another one of the leading ear, nose, and throat specialists in Johannesburg. We included him on our list for his impressive background and solid track record.

Originally from Limpopo, Dr. Lamola completed his undergraduate training at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, formerly the University of Natal Medical School. He then provided General Practitioner Services to multiple areas in Joburg.

Dr. Lamola was also a resident Medical Officer at Wits Campus Clinic for about two years. However, he only accomplished his specialisation in ENT in 2018.

Another thing we found notable about Dr. Lamola is their commitment to continuous improvement. We love how he has completed multiple training courses in ENT from different universities and institutions in and outside of the country.

Dr. Lamola is also well-connected and is part of several organisations, including the ENT Society of South Africa. In addition, he’s also a distinguished fellow at the College of Otorhinolaryngologists of South Africa.

Their clinic offers a diverse set of otorhinolaryngology services, which is a plus for us, and one of the most common conditions they treat is a deviated nasal septum through septoplasty.

A number of Dr. Lamola’s previous patients feel like their bedside manner and overall services can still be improved, though.

Some patients complain about the doctor being too distant and seeming to be disinterested in their cases and concerns, which is disappointing.

Unfortunately, the clinic’s representatives don’t seem to be very attentive either. We’re disheartened to hear that it can be difficult to reach out for questions and appointment booking.

Pros

  • Commended for consistently high-quality service
  • Well-maintained clinic space
  • Remarkable pre- and post-surgery care
  • Experienced community doctor
  • Has 9 years of experience in specialisation
  • Active in the academe

Cons

  • Less popular
  • Small team

Dr. Yahya Atiya, a brilliant otorhinolaryngology specialist based in Johannesburg, runs a small clinic. Although it’s less known than other bigger specialised clinics, what sets this one apart from the rest is its devotion to being community-oriented.

Immediately after he completed his medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2004, Dr. Atiya realised he wanted his services to benefit the underprivileged, which we greatly admire.

We’re impressed to find that Dr. Atiya rendered medical services in a small rural town in Mpumalanga for a year. Then, he completed his specialisation and Master’s degree in otorhinolaryngology in 2014.

Dr. Atiya is currently employed at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and is also a trainer and supervisor at the University of the Witwatersrand Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.

He is highly commended for delivering consistently high-quality service, which is also why we selected him. We love how past patients who underwent septoplasty have high regard for the doctor’s expertise and professionalism.

The clinic also takes pre- and post-surgery care very seriously, which we commend. Patients appreciate how, despite being a small team, the clinic’s staff are very attentive and hands-on with patients throughout the whole process.

Lastly, we love how Dr. Atiya works hard to make health care accessible to the poor. Many of the clinic’s previous patients express their gratitude for the affordable but excellent service they received from Dr. Atiya and his team.
