The best internet service providers in Johannesburg are reliably stream-ready!

Speed: Independent speed tests using sites such as Speed Test and MyBroadBandSpeedTest were used to determine the download/upload and latency of candidates. ISPs consistently delivering close to promised speeds scored higher.

Reliability: Uptime guarantees and outage frequency were assessed based on feedback, personal experience, forums, and interviews. Problem resolution speed also mattered.

Customer Service: Responsiveness, professionalism, and helpfulness were measured via direct inquiries (calls and emails) and testimonials. ISPs that are proactive and transparent received better marks.

Plan Flexibility: Based on contract reviews, we selected providers that offer a range of plans suitable for homes, businesses, or heavy users. Extra points were granted to providers, allowing easy upgrades/add-ons or contract adjustments.

Pricing: Plans were compared for value based on speed, data limits, contract terms, and extra features. On top of that, we considered how close the fees are to Johannesburg’s typical rates.

A couple of years back, I was up for a job that would’ve paid me some big-time cash. My CV was sharp, the experience was there, and I ticked the right boxes.

Sadly, I didn’t get it. My internet lagged during the Zoom interview.

Maybe you have a version of that scenario, and you’ll probably agree with this sentiment: slow internet is annoying (or downright career-altering in my case).

Now, credit where it’s due, Jozi’s internet providers have been upping their game recently, especially with speeds. We reviewed the best ones so you know which ones are worth paying for monthly.

Urbanwave is spot on if you’re a heavy internet user like yours truly. Uncapped and custom fibre packages are their main gig, with basic speed tiers sitting between 10 Mbps/5 Mbps and 50 Mbps/10 Mbps.

Contract-wise, you have options to bend things your way. I, for one, used to roll with the 24-month deal before opting for a month-to-month contract.

Content creators can grab some fine deals, too, thanks to the Home Creator AirFibre Packages. Built with symmetrical speeds (like 30 Mbps/30 Mbps), these plans are typically more reliable.

Additionally, they’re great for office use. Business-focused deals are available, and some hit speeds of 100 Mbps/100 Mbps.

They’re closed on weekends, though. Most alternatives operate daily or at least six days a week.

Outages have also occurred in the past, so their reliability score isn’t flawless.

But to be fair, repairs often get done exactly when they said they would.

Pros

  • Offers various packages
  • Reliability on fixes
  • Has content creator-specific deals
  • Has business-tailored deals

Cons

  • History of outages
  • Weekend closure

Incredibly Prompt

Huge shout-out to Urbanwave! I needed help recently, and their assistance was top-notch—friendly, professional, and incredibly prompt. They consistently exceed my expectations, and it’s why I’m a loyal customer. Urbanwave, you’re the best!

Very Responsive

Unmatched service experience. Over the last 6 years I have logged maybe 5 queries where my internet was a bit slow. Support team is very responsive. Never had to wait for feedback. They know what’s going on with their network and when the 2 occasions that there has been an outage, the connection was back up within the given timeline. You will not regret signing with them.

If you’re after a provider with stacks of capped and uncapped options, Vox is worth a shot. Fibre, satellite, and LTE plans are on hand here.

I love that they throw in decent discounts, too. These usually apply for the first four months only, but shaving R100 less than usual is always a perk in our books.

Heavy users will likely find their 500 Mbps/200 Mbps max speed dead handy as well. For those who think that’s overkill (in speed and price), their 50 Mbps/20 Mbps plan might hit the spot (it’s the most popular one).

Vox’s national coverage is another advantage. Their service reaches both urban and remote zones, with area-specific bundles like the 30 Mbps/30 Mbps one.

That said, customer service takes its sweet time, and some reps can be unfriendly, which is the last thing you’d want after waiting for 15-plus minutes on the line or dealing with a three-day outage.

Pros

  • Offers various packages and discounts
  • National coverage
  • Area-specific deals

Cons

  • Slow customer service
  • Occasional but long outages

Being affordable makes Net Nine Nine an easy pick. Their prices are what you’ll generally see in South Africa, and the payment setup is all month-to-month, no contracts, no cancellation fees.

On the speed front, they have 50 Mbps/50 Mbps and 100 Mbps/100 Mbps plans, both ideal for SMEs. If that’s too much, the 20 Mbps/10 Mbps package might do the trick.

The catch is that’s where their bundles end. And sure, the list sorts a lot of needs (e.g., business and home use), but we have ISPs here with at least 5 setups on offer.

Customer service isn’t their strongest point either. Responses tend to drag a bit, particularly when it comes to patching outages, with some clients moaning about waiting for 3 days or more.

A small bright spot is that you’ll manage everything in Net Nine Nine’s app. That includes payment, support requests, and tracking usage.

Pros

  • Affordable rates
  • No contracts/cancellation fees
  • Has 50 Mbps/50 Mbps and 100 Mbps/100 Mbps plans
  • Convenient app

Cons

  • Late response to outages
  • Limited bundles

Excellent Service

I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the excellent service provided by the Net 99 team in Botshabelo. The network’s speed and reliability have been impressive, with no issues encountered. Furthermore, the customer service team, particularly Tshepang Mahloko and Mr. Koos, have been outstanding in their responsiveness and support.

Home-Connect is another ISP that’s big on promotions. A few selected areas get about R20 to R40 off what they’d normally pay, and seasonal deals make price drops go even lower.

In terms of fibre packages, their range is the most extensive here, featuring over 10 operators with at least 5 bundles each. The available speeds sit between 30 Mbps/30 Mbps and 1,000 Mbps/50 Mbps, so almost every user type can be serviced.

That includes areas where fibre isn’t available yet. See, Home-Connect has no shortage of plug-and-play LTE deals, both capped and uncapped.

As with most, it’s customer service where they lag, especially if we’re talking queries. I’ve experienced waiting for over two days for a response, and many clients whinge about the same thing.

Some have also grumbled about their accounting errors, like getting charged the same amount after an approved plan downgrade.

Pros

  • Affordable and offers promotions
  • Extensive LTE and fibre plans
  • Free installation
  • Top speed of 1,000 Mbps/50 Mbps

Cons

  • Delayed response to complaints
  • Accounting errors

King has been really helpful and friendly in helping me set up my new router as well as configuring my previous router as a Wi-Fi extender. He is an individual with patience and delivers excellent service. Thank you, King, for your awesome support.

Friendly and Helpful

A tree knocked out our fibre and the call centre was amazing, providing feedback in minutes. Technicians arrived within a couple of hours and worked until about 7 pm, going above and beyond expectations. Everyone we dealt with was friendly and helpful — service like this is rare these days.

Afrieta may not be a massive, nationwide ISP, but they’re big in personal service. Of all the client bases we checked, theirs seems to have the fewest complaints about service, with folks praising the real-time assistance, short wait times, and the staff’s know-how.

There’s a catch, unsurprisingly. Their coverage is the biggest, but if you’re outside of the main areas they serve (Milpark Mews, Meyerton, Roshnee, Ruusterval, Sebokeng, Evaton, and Tshepong), service availability may be limited.

Learning about the packages also requires them first, which isn’t super convenient. Most competitors are pretty upfront about this bit.

Even so, we’ll give their bundles a positive grade, given their “lifestyle-based” model. The speeds and prices are set based on how you use your internet, so you only pay for what you need.

In addition, speeds are uncapped, interruptions are rare, and the prices sit right for Johannesburg.

Pros

  • Lifestyle-based packages
  • Fair rates
  • Responsive support
  • Minimal interruptions

Cons

  • Limited coverage
  • Calls are required to learn about the plans

Reasonable Pricing

Excellent service. Shaheen is always helpful, polite, and respectful. One of the most reliable internet service providers I’ve used, with reasonable pricing, fast internet, and timely invoicing. Communication is clear, and issues are always resolved promptly. Highly recommend Afrieta to others.
