The best hair salons in George won’t kill your hair with chemicals!

Expertise and Expertise: Checking accreditations and business registries, we respectively selected salons with certified stylists and at least 5 years in the hair industry. Awards, relevant degrees, and a longer tenure meant higher scores.

Versatility: We called and browsed websites to determine how many services each candidate offers, picking those with at least three of the following: cuts, styling, and colouring.

Atmosphere: Cleanliness, comfort, and overall vibe were graded based on our own experience and that of interviewees.

Customer Service: Like the previous criterion, we rated this one by personally visiting candidates (when available) and talking to past/present clients.

Features we specifically focused on are friendliness, consultation quality, aftercare, convenience, know-how, responsiveness, and extra perks, such as free coffee!

Pricing: And lastly, quotes and price lists were compared to see whether the costs matched the value offered. If the salon has discounts, loyalty perks, and no sneaky add-ons, it received higher marks.

If you’re in George right now and your hair isn’t Vogue-ready or outdoor-worthy, don’t blame your karma or the city’s temp just yet. Maybe you simply need to change your current one or book a salon trip.

I know, going that route isn’t as simple as it sounds. You can get entangled with the wrong spot or waste hours sifting through every online review.

So we took one for the team. After weeks of chair-hopping and research, we narrowed the options to George salons that can lift your locks without destroying them.

We also have hair salon guides for other South African towns and cities, like Pretoria and Stellenbosch. Check them out when you’re in the area!

Longevity is yet to slow down Sorbet Salon. Despite being open since 2005, its quality is still tip-top, with yearly-trained specialists at the forefront.

Their team also has solid people skills. From my experience, stylists here are often bubbly, calm, and professional, with none of that “I hate this job” attitude.

Another boon I appreciate is the extensive service list. The basics are available, plus you can get your lashes and nails done.

Booking an appointment, purchasing gift cards, and earning/tracking rewards are sorted out via an app, too. The salon is even just a 3-minute cruise from George’s centre.

That said, it’s far from flawless. The app has received flak for confirming reservations only for them to fall through, with the quoted price increasing afterwards.

In addition, not everyone is pumped with their regular rates, mainly clients who think other Sorbet branches are cheaper.

Pros

  • Annually-trained staff
  • Only 3 mins from the city centre
  • Open since 2005
  • Has a loyalty program

Cons

  • History of unreliable booking system
  • Rates aren’t suited for every budget

Made Me Feel Completely at Ease

I had the most relaxing and exceptional pedicure with Charne! From start to finish, she made me feel completely at ease and ensured every detail was perfect. I truly appreciated her attention to detail and the care she took to meet my exact requests. My feet feel amazing, and I left feeling deeply relaxed and pampered. Thank you, Charne, for such a wonderful experience — I’ll definitely be back! 💅✨

As a full-service salon, Shampu eliminates the hassle of heading to another joint for a different service. Heck, they even have specialised treatments, namely pH Bonder, chemistry shot phase, and micro-keratin smoothing.

That means they don’t use random products either. It’s all Redken here, a brand known for its non-drying and non-destructive formulas.

Atmosphere-wise, I have no gripes. The place is neat and run by a cordial, welcoming bunch, with free coffee (the cappuccino is rich!) to boot.

It would be sweet if they had an app to simplify the whole booking process, though, especially since they’re popular.

On the upside, getting fleeced is unlikely. Pricing is proper for George’s standard (the specialised treatments included), and they drop occasional discounts.

The location is easy to reach, too. Clients driving from the city centre will get here in about 10 to 12 minutes.

Pros

  • Open for over 5 years
  • Has special treatment like ph Bonder
  • Uses Redken products only
  • Only 10 to 12 minutes from the city centre

Cons

  • No booking app
  • High demand

Did a Great Job

It was my first time at Shampu. I felt very welcomed by the friendly staff. They did a great job putting in some highlights. I am very satisfied.

Lovely Experience

It was my first visit at Shampu Hair Studio and what a lovely experience it was. Being welcomed by the friendly receptionist and prompt hair dresser, Michelle with the smell of coffee when entering. Michelle has a natural talent in choosing a treatment suiting your hair type and personality. With no doubt, this is the best my hair looked in years! Thank you for dedicating that much time and efford to personalize treatments with astonishable results. Your team did a great job and again I will drive 60 minutes to have the same experience at your relaxing and beautiful studio.

Colour Lab is a smart pick for those with Caucasian or Asian hair. The staff is trained for both, specifically in providing services such as colour correction, restoration treatments, and balayage.

If you need proof, they can show certifications from recognised bodies, L’Oreal and the BTC University, for instance.

A glaring weak point, however, is their shorter range. Unlike our other picks, this one is colour-centric and doesn’t have extra beauty services like manis and pedis.

The atmosphere could also be improved. While the place is modern and tidy, a handful of past clients didn’t appreciate the staff eyeing them upon entry.

To be fair, we met folks who rate the atmosphere well. Some have even been with Colour Lab for over 5 years, typically clients handled by Stefan.

On top of that, their products are premium. K18 Hair is a fitting example.

Pros

  • Open for nearly 10 years
  • Certified stylists
  • Uses premium products
  • Specialises in colouring Caucasian and Asian hair

Cons

  • Fewer services
  • Atmosphere is hit or miss

Fantastic Experience

I have had the most fantastic experience at the Colour Lab! The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly and the salon is beautiful. I have dark hair and have been struggling to get the correct shade of blonde from previous hairdressers. I honestly could not believe the results! Not only was Stef able to colour correct my hair, but also able to bring it back to life! It feels like my hair again! If I could give them 100 stars I would!

Amazing

The best experience and my hair looks and feels great! Stephan is so talented and it is incredible to see a master at work. He is truly passionate about his job. No one has ever coloured my hair as amazing as he does. The ladies are so sweet and explain everything they are doing. Oh, and they only use the best products on your hair 💇🏻‍♀️. Bonus: They also serve a great cappuccino ☕️

Hair S.O.S. is one of the most reliable picks when it comes to punctuality and price. Clients we interviewed, including repeat ones, didn’t grumble about late arrivals or overpriced rates.

Discounts are even rolled out for pensioners and kids, so the money-saving deals extend to everyone.

On the services side, unisex cuts are their main gig, though you can swing by for tints, highlights, funky colours, Brazilian treatments, and wedding styling (even better if you pair it with a piece from these Johannesburg wedding dress shops).

If there’s a snag, it’s the salon’s “smaller size.” Hair S.O.S. is run by Vanessa herself (the owner), so scheduling can get pretty tight.

It’s also not the roomiest or sleekest space in town.

The silver lining? You’ll get a tailored treatment from the same stylist who has clocked 10-plus years in the trade.

Vanessa is generally touted as personable, too, with several clients loving her conversational skills.

Pros

  • Operating for over 10 years
  • Lower rates
  • Has repeat clients
  • Offers discounts for kids and pensioners

Cons

  • One-woman salon
  • Not the most eye-catching salon

Refreshed Hair

Needed a trim. They were very accommodating and could help me out at short notice. Very happy with my refreshed hair.

Service is Fantastic

I struggled for years to find a good hairdresser in George, but I have finally found her! I have been to Vanessa twice in the last few months, both times I was completely satisfied – she cut my hair exactly the way I wanted it and she did so perfectly. The first time I just got a trim on my long hair, and today I got a bob haircut – which turned out amazing! She is so nice and friendly, her service is fantastic. She is very fast, always on time and really reasonably priced. I highly recommend her service! Thank you so much, Vanessa!

No other entry here beats Hair Legends if we’re talking tenure alone. The salon has been cutting, styling, and colouring since 1994.

One strong hint at their quality is the number of patrons, with the majority sticking with them for over 5 years.

Another indicator of their top-notch service is the product range. It’s headlined by Redken and Moroccanoil.

As for pricing, I’d call it average. The rates for cutting, styling, colouring, men’s grooming, and Mediscope (for hair loss/scalp issues) are reasonable without being a bargain or a shock.

A reward program would fit them well, though, given their client base’s loyalty.

Having an app for streamlining bookings would be quite convenient, too.

Past that, they should keep things just as they are, mainly the warm service (props to Anna Marrie at the reception!), their stylists’ personalised approach, and the free coffee!

Pros

  • Around since 1994
  • Has lots of repeat clients
  • Uses Redken and Moroccanoil
  • Offers Mediscope for those with hair loss/scalp problems

Cons

  • No app
  • No loyalty program

Great Team

Every time I go for my hair at Hair Legends I walk out more than satisfied. The service is professional and Natasha, the owner, highlights my hair so beautifully and I’m so satisfied with my haircut, and I feel like a queen when I leave the salon. Marlene is so good as well and Anne Marie at the front desk makes everyone feel so special and welcome. The ladies who wash your hair are excellent with massaging your head. Thank you girls, you are a very special and GREAT TEAM. I look forward to being spoilt every time. I can recommend Hair Legends to anyone who wants their hair professionally done.
